A few years ago in the wake of Stephen Colbert's wikiality campaign, a few of us decided to create AFAIKapedia. For those of you short on the kids' acronyms, AFAIK stands for "as far as I know" and is generally pronounced "a fake". We probably wrote 10-20 articles and Mena designed a wonderful logo similar to Wikipedia's globe but instead what the world looked like as far as she knew. Michael and Anil contributed some of the funnier articles, we had a good laugh and then the domain expired and I shut down the account. Turns out, someone else had... Continue »

I tried to imagine how I would feel if, having, God forbid, lost my precious daughter, born three months and ten days before Christina Taylor-Green, somebody offered this charming, tidy, corny vignette to me by way of consolation. I mean,... Continue »

Through these arguments, it becomes clear that Sarah Palin's assertions are designed not to prove that Obama is unqualified for the office of the Presidency of the United States. Rather, she appears to be attempting to convince a substantial portion... Continue »

Hi everyone! This week feels like the week everything has been finally coming together. We rolled out an interim build on Monday that exposes things like favorites, sharing counts, and image views. The next few builds will have more of what we think is core to the site: the concept... Continue »

"Can't even last one day without your love." - Teena Marie, Can't Last A Day Seth Godin posted today about what he shipped in 2010 and that seems like a good enough reason for me to look at what I had planned for 2010, what I accomplished (both planned and unplanned), and where I fell short. This was my overarching strategy for the year: Broad Strategic Goals In my career and in my personal life, I will Take More Risks. Creatively and professionally, I will be focused on Telling More Stories. In all things, I will be inclined to Fail... Continue »

I remember telling my mother that I had a "corazonada" (a hunch) that the baby would come early. She was happy to hear this, and I was so sure that my instincts were on target that I started to wrap... Continue »

Every year when the calendar makes the big flip end of year lists fill the last two weeks of the month. One trend I'm noticing is that people love their iPads, but not their iPad apps. And people really hate... Continue »

I started this post on 5/28/2009. Judging from my notes, I had intended to make this a very long entry. It's unfinished and mostly unedited. I just have to let it go now, despite its rough edges. Perez later published... Continue »

Blog: Expert Labs
As we mentioned last week, the White House recently opened up its first-ever public wiki, for feedback about ExpertNet, a proposed platform for collecting expert feedback from the public. Given that our mission's a close fit for the goals of ExpertNet, we wanted to begin by talking about how the work we've done with the ThinkUp platform at Expert Labs could serve some parts of the request today, and even more in the future. (Obviously, ExpertNet and Expert Labs have similar names, but we're just two different projects with similar goals.) The ExpertNet proposal lays out four main steps for... Continue »

Today is my last day at Six Apart. It's been 3.5 years with an outstandingly clever and humane group of unforgettable friends. I dedicate this Apperceptive/Six Apart-NYC montage to all of you. [WARNING] This is a long, photo-intensive, inside-joke-ridden post.... Continue »

The last thing I would imagine the world would need is a *new* blog app, but [Anil suggested just that][personalcomment] in response to my post on building a journal mesh: > I think the best thing that could happen right now to encourage long-form sharing, though, would be having tools... How have blogs changed, and what's there to miss about them? [fluffy just wrote][fluffy] some good thoughts that dovetail with a project I'd like to work on, so I thought I'd respond at a little more length. ### The current impasse ### Why does no one offer modern blogging with... Continue »

Today was Six Apart's last day. It became Say Media this afternoon. And end of an amazing company, and a start of a new one. A colleague said Six Apart was sort of like college. We all worked and played together, and over the years, we started bumping into alum around the city working at new ventures. We are still a group, and are having a big alum gathering later in January to all come together. Current Six Aparters will be with Say Media, but many of those I have worked with, especially from the very early years, have already... Continue »

Blog: Expert Labs
Last week marked one year since the public debut of Expert Labs at Web 2.0 Expo, and since this is also the week that those of us here in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving, it seemed like a great opportunity to briefly look back at where we've been, and most importantly point out where we're going in the future. Expert Labs' progress over this first year begins with the amazing team we've built. In addition to the enormous support we get from being part of AAAS, our staff has been anchored by the addition of two tremendous talents, with Gina... Continue »
