So, here's the update I promised last week: I'm thrilled to join DotCloud as a software engineer, starting May. Many of you have seen the news that they recently shipped the support for its Perl stack that I know a lot of Perl hackers are excited about. As they point out in the post, I contributed my experience and knowledge for them to build the perl support, but it was actually an hour of whiteboarding session to figure out what the right stack would be (i.e. uWSGI and PSGI, perlbrew, local::lib and cpanminus for a start, but more support to come), and the following few hours of hacking to just build it. It was so much fun and inspiring to... Continue »

OK, so I have some news to share with you. Today, April 22nd, is my last day at SAY Media. Including 2 years at SAKK and 4 years at Six Apart headquarters in 548 4th street, this has been an incredible venture and terrific experience for me to work with all of smart people on numerous exciting projects, but I figured it's time to move on. I should have a lot to write, but instead i'll dump some memorable pictures :) Man, that's a lot of memories. I'll send everyone a big hug and thank you for making my days at Six Apart/SAY so much fun! P.S. I'll take a quick vacation next week, and will start a new gig... Continue »

Here are some things I've been working on lately. * [Convore for iPhone][]. Leah, Eric, and Eric at [Convore][] were kind enough to let me pitch in for their iPhone app so they could submit it in time for SXSW. It's definitely a 1.0 but people seem to like it... Continue »

I've got a new company and a new product, Convore. Convore is the somewhat indirect result of my thinking on group chat for the past few years. About two years ago I was using IRC almost every day to communicate at work and with friends. For the 2009 Django Dash, I helped design and build a web-based IRC client called Leafy Chat with Alex Gaynor and Chris Wanstrath. Soon after building the IRC-based Leafy Chat, it started to bother me that IRC was so complicated and nerdy. Even with the Leafy Chat web client, I kept mulling over how much... Continue »

Friend of the show Michael Sippey asked me earlier about good restaurants in Half Moon Bay, California. Michael is passing through town with his two daughters and was looking for a good place to eat. Even with the rain expected today, Half Moon Bay is a fun place to visit for a midday drive and bite to eat. Michael's was not the first such request I've received (I'm the Half Moon Bay maven in my social network) and when I realized how many decent family restaurants we have here, I thought it was worth a good (SEO-laden) post. So here... Continue »

@piarrakun, a Perl hacker from Yokoyama.pm, created a cool site http://ustrict.tv/ where you can tweet how fast you can type "use strict". But my typing speed is so slow and it took 1.2s or more. What a shame. So, an idea came up my mind: "let's cheat it". To do that, you have to 1) create KeyboardEvent 2) set keyCode 3) dispatch event. Google Chrome is my default web browser at home so that I'd started to code a bookmarklet for that. But it turns out that Chrome (I used 5.0.375.99 beta) has a bug which event.keyCode property is read-only... Continue »

Sports Basement to Lucas Valley & Tiburon Loop Find more Bike Rides in San Francisco, California Here is the summary from the cycling training ride my girlfriend and I did on Sunday, July 18th 2010. On September 25 - 26, 2010, I'm joining more than a thousand cyclists for the Bike MS: Waves to Wine Ride. This two-day bike ride isn't a race, but it does raise money in the race to find the cure for multiple sclerosis. Last year, cyclists raised over $1.5 Million to help the 20,000 Northern Californians living with MS, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system. Researchers are making progress, but the cause and cure are still over the horizon. And that's why I saddle up to ride. With this journey, I'm helping the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fund research to find the cause, cure and treatment of MS. My participation also helps support services for people affected by MS. My fundraising supports the ride's 2009 goal of $1.75 million. Please help people living with MS in our community by making a one-time, tax-deductible donation. Click on the link at the bottom of this message to visit my personal page to make a donation. Any amount you feel comfortable giving is deeply appreciated. With your support, we can make a positive impact today in the lives of 20,000 men, women and children with multiple sclerosis. Thank you! I'm an awesome person and would love to donate to your ride, Alex! Continue »
