My favorite party game! I hang out with the NorthStar Games guys every time we go to a gaming trade show or GenCon.
We just sold another copy of Small World tonight thanks to TableTop. :)
Looking forward to seeing you at GenCon - and I have dice for you! lol
New Tabletop! Say Anything with Matt Mira, Jonah Ray, and Josh Cagan!
Casual party games are a great infection vector for introducing tabletop gaming to our non-gaming friends. For experienced players, they're also fantastic palate cleansers between games of Puerto Rico and Power Grid. This week's new Tabletop is a really fun, quick, easy, and profoundly silly par...
Is it down? I'm getting server not found.
There's a new episode of Radio Free Burrito
These puppies want you to listen to Radio Free Burrito. So from time to time, I make this stupid podcast called Radio Free Burrito. It's this thing that I do because it's creative and entertaining to me, and is an easy way for me to amuse myself and hopefully share some interesting things ...
We've sold several games as a result of your videos! Thanks for the extra business! :)
More from behind the scenes at Tabletop
In my gaming group, I am not the guy who is good at explaining rules (that guy would be Tom D., when he plays with us, or my friend Cal M., the rest of the time) so the part of Tabletop I was the most anxious about is that segment at the beginning of the show where I explain the rules of the gam...
We just had a Dominion tournament last weekend at our store for Child's Play. :)
The Minecraft Marathon is awesome, made a giant Evil Wil Wheaton, and raised money for Child's Play
Some of my friends raised money for Child's Play Charity by doing a Minecraft Marathon. I meant to link to it when it was happening, but mumblemumblesomething. Anyway, here are two of the many amazeballs things they got excited and made: (Click images to embiggen at Flickr) I wish I hadn't m...
Wow, not an hour ago I was telling hubby how much I miss the Saturday night gaming we used to have with friends who have since moved away. You'd think, as game store owners, that we would have more opportunities to play, but no such luck.
We are, however, having a "Game in the New Year" party this year and I cannot even express in words how much I'm looking forward to it! Bring on Shadow Hunters, Incan Gold, King of Tokyo and Star Fluxx!
on the importance of making time to play the games you like with the people you love
In the introduction to my short collection of gaming essays called Games Matter, I wrote: Of all the things that make me a geek, nothing brings me more joy, or is more important to me, than gaming. I am the person I am today because of the games I played and the people I played them with as I ...
Bwahaha! That reminds me of the Unhinged card, "Granny's Payback." http://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=74281
I am literally playing The Dead Meemaw Card so that you'll watch me on The Big Bang Theory tonight.
Yes, I am literally playing The Dead Meemaw Card so that you'll watch me on The Big Bang Theory tonight.
You're making me crave beer and I don't even LIKE beer! :)
We went to an 80s arcade in a small town near here last weekend and played Ms Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, and Vanguard. They had over 30 classic games plus pinball. Very fun!
The Poet and the Painter casting shadows on the water
Beer stuff! I wanted to make Jaime Paglia an oatmeal stout, because that's his favorite. When I went to the shop to get supplies, though, Greg (who owns it) told me that you really have to do a partial mash or all-grain to get it just right. I'm not quite ready for that, yet, so I went with my b...
I bought the Fighting Time Lords shirt last month and have had several people - mostly strangers - ask me where I got it and that they MUST have one of their own. :)
I wish I were creative and/or artistic so I could Make Stuff too.
Get Excited And Make Things Revisited
My friend Joel and I got excited and made a thing. We announced it last night, and in about 12 hours, it's become more popular than either of us expected, so this seemed like a good time to revisit Getting Excited And Making Things. I don't know how many of you have been reading my lame blog lo...
That's awesome!

Happy birthday!! Today is my late grandma's bday and tomorrow is mine. :) I'm having a big geek-out gamer night at the game store we own. If you find yourself in central IL for some reason, stop on by. LOL
Oh, tomorrow is also my niece's bday, and Alton Brown's. :D
Spock is not impressed that it's my birthday
During w00tstock last week, I mentioned that I was turning 38 this week. After the show, Anne told me that I was, in fact, turning 39. In the few seconds that it took me to do some math, I lost a year of my life. Apparently, this is the sort of thing that happens when you get to be my age, which...
omigosh, I had just stopped giggling from the post, then I read this and almost choked on my Diet Coke! ROFL!
this is really gross. you have been warned.
There is a tree near my house, that has probably been there for years, just doing its tree thing, watching patiently as families come and go, empires rise and fall, and Isengard is flooded. I'm sure it's a beautiful tree, cheerfully trading carbon dioxide for oxygen, providing shade, and most li...
My cat, Ramses, insists that 5:45am is his feeding time, even though he knows FULL WELL that I don't get up til 6:45. His methods of informing me of my error have ranged from toe biting, incessant mrowing, purring in my face. and thwapping me in the back of the head, to his current annoyance of choice - licking my back. I swear he has the roughest tongue of any cat I've ever owned.
Shutting him out of the room is not an option. He reaches his paw underneath the door, grabs hold of it, and rattles it until I give in. That and he's a total loudmouth. But I can't stay mad at him long when he looks at me with those baby blues. :)
tamed by the purr of a jaguar
Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post. I had no idea so many new readers were visiting my blog; I'd just assumed that the Internet had gotten bored with me, moved on to whatever the new hotness is, and I was writing for the few, the proud, the geeky who had been here forever. Knowi...
Hi Wil. :) I've been reading your blog off and on for a long time and now have it on my feed so I won't miss anything. I don't know why I had the "off" times except to say that WoW and such were quite distracting for a while. ;) This is, however, my first time reading your 4th of July post.
Because it's become a yearly tradition, here's a story about fireworks
I've written hundreds of thousands of words over the years, but this remains one of my all-time favorites, so I like to revisit it every year. It was originally written and published on July 5, 2002, which usually feels like years and days ago all at once, but this year actually feels like a lif...
Speaking of Fighting Time Lords t-shirt, I just ordered it last night and cannot WAIT to wear it to my Geeked-Out Gamer birthday party on the 30th!
Is this something you can share with the rest of us Amazing Larry?!
Anne went to bed before I was tired last night. Being a good husband who doesn't want to get The Wrath, I opted to head into my office on the other side of the house to watch a little TV before I went to sleep, instead of sitting in our bed and watching TV there. (Yes, we live in a house that is...
In a small town not far from Bloomington, IL is a classic arcade with all my old favorites. We just recently found this little time capsule and can't wait to sink in more quarters! My very first date as an almost 16 yr old in 1985 was at an arcade (happy sigh).
Also, next time you're in Vegas, you must go to the Pinball Hall of Fame. I think hubby and I spent more time there than we did in the casino. ;)
the value of a quarter
Last week, I took my car to one of those car washes at the gas station. When I was waiting to pull in, I saw that for the low low price of one dollar more, I could upgrade my wash options from four useless things to seven useless things. Obviously, I reached into my change box (some of you may k...
We were swapping gross cat stories last night with a friend. This friend won with the tale of stepping on a partially eaten bat in the middle of the night. Yuck!
Tomorrow, I go back to Eureka
“What’s the forecast for Vancouver?” Anne asked. “It’s in the 40s and raining,” I said. “Oh, that sounds awesome,” she said, in a tone of voice that indicated the opposite was actually true. “It’s okay,” I said, “I have my scarf and my jacket and my warm hat.” As I listed each of these items, ...
