Happy Birthday Wil! Hope you had an awesome day!
It's my birthday!
And I am having the best birthday, ever! Thank you to everyone who has wished me happy birthday on the Twitters, and if July 29th is your birthday too, happy birthday to you! (Image by Chuck Gamble, found at WIRED's GeekDad blog.)
This video made my night! I haven't seen Night Court since I was about 10 years old. I used to turn on Nick at Nite when I couldn't sleep, and always managed to catch an episode of Night Court. Thanks for the memory!
"Mi llamo es Bob."
Yesterday, I saw this video linked at Reddit. It's one of those things that I haven't thought about in years, but the instant I saw it, it unlocked some memories, one of which I left as a comment: I was a huge Night Court nerd when I was a kid, and from time to time I would ask Brent to do ...
I am indecisive as to who I am going to vote for in the upcoming election, so I have held off on voting in the primary for NY. While I'd rather see Obama in office than Hilary, I cannot say that I'd want him for sure. He does seem very indecisive in his responses to questions. I had this issue with John Kerry in the last presedential election. Kerry would answer a question, and Bush would come back and sort of tell us why what Kerry wanted to do wasn't possible, and then suddenly Kerry would change his answer.
I still remain indecisive. Hmph.
I voted today
I cast my vote for Barack Obama in California's primary this morning. Here's a major reason why I did: “When I am this party's nominee, my opponent will not be able to say that I voted for the war in Iraq; or that I gave George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran; or that I supported Bush-Chen...

Oh hey, I forgot to add my story of being fucked-over by a company. When I was 18 or 19, I got a JC Penney card. I bought a couple of non-expensive items, and waited for a bill. I never got one. When I moved into my first apartment, I called customer service to change my address. The person I got could barely speak English and probably screwed up my address, because a few months later I started getting phone calls from them saying that I owed them all of this money for late fees--but I never got a bill telling me how much I owed! So I paid them off and canceled that card.
I also got screwed by Kaufmann's. I used my brand new card to buy a $10 shirt. The woman said I could show my application paper if I wanted to use the card right away. I never got my actual card, nor a bill, and all of a sudden I got calls telling me I owed them $60, and they wouldn't take off those late fees! So I paid them off, and went to cancel, and they wouldn't let me! I just went to apply for a card again, now that it's Macy's, and I learned via snail mail that my old account number was still in their computer! What a bunch of bullshit! I'm glad it's not Kaufmann's anymore!

I have a AAA membership, but not their insurance. While I am lucky to have been able to call them when I was freezing my ass off waiting for a jump, I just don't trust a company like that to handle an insurance claim. I am very satisfied with my insurance company, and they are always very polite and cooperative. I was in an accident in 2006. I called my insurance company the next morning, and someone was at my house within an hour to look at my car and give me a check for the repairs. How much better service can you ask for?

I hear you about the playground equipment. I used to love playing in those wooden playground structures. Now, as I drive around Rochester(NY), I notice that they've all been replaced with plastic equipment, and it doesn't look as fun as the old wooden ones. It really is a wonder that kids would rather sit inside in front of the PS2 or X-Box instead of playing on the playground.
best playground equipment, ever
When I used to take Nolan and Ryan to the playground, I always felt like they got seriously ripped off. Playground equipment in the 70s and 80s was totally awesome, and playground equipment in the 90s was so goddamn neutered (in the name of protecting The Children, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ...

I totally agree with what you are saying. I like to think that is why I play video games as well. I really get into playing SingStar and sometimes Guitar Hero as well, and I love to see the different costumes and environments they provide. I remember playing this game called "Dead or Alive" on my PS1, just to win new costumes and weapons. I didn't care about winning the game. People seem to think something miraculous happens when you win the game, and then you get there and the credits roll, and you're like "That's it?" So I play a video game purely for moving on to the next level, just to be able to explore new places and find secret passageways and things. I love racing games as well...it's so much fun to win new cars and paints and things, but I suck at winning. :)
Quote of the Day
"I realised I don't play games for the challenge. I don't need or want to be punished by a game for making mistakes. I play games for what Ron Gilbert calls "new art". I play to see the next level or cool animation. I don't play games to beat them I play games to see them. Coming to that realisa...

I will keep that in my thoughts, Wil. It looks like a very worthy cause, and I would be there if I lived anywhere near the vicinity LOL. Have fun!

Hey, saw Numb3ers this past Friday. Good stuff! I was really tired that night and fell asleep, missing about 15 minutes of it, but I saw all the parts with you in it. It was very enjoyable!
186, and some other NUMB3RS
The good news is that I packed and labeled 186 books to be shipped. Of those 186, about 30 are international orders that still need customs forms and postage, but the rest are ready to go. This brings us to the bad news, which is that I just finished now, an hour after the post office closed, t...

I agree with your position on the writers strike. I hope to be a WGA member myself someday, and I think they are right to argue for better wages.
these points of data make a beautiful line
I got my dates confused in my head, and thought today was Veteran's Day. I'm embarrassed and a little ashamed that I completely missed it yesterday. So even though it's one day late: Thank you, veterans, for your service. And now, some various things, most of which I came across while Propelling...

People like your friend Andrew are good to have around when we need someone with a "Red Pen of Doom" to edit the hell out of our work. I had an editor with one of those pens...and I am thanking her more now than ever for using it on my work like she did.
Happy Anniversary as well to you and your wife! I hope you guys had a great day!
Geek in Review: a Mind Forever Voyaging
I took yesterday off, because it was a little more important to spend my wedding anniversary with the woman who was responsible for it than . . . well, than anything else in the whole world. So I'm a day late on sharing this week's Geek in Review, A Mind Forever Voyaging. My limited time is the...

Don't sweat it...my Halloween sucked too.
the thursday hangover
When I woke up this morning, my head was throbbing, I felt sick to my stomach, and my whole body felt toxic. "Oh my god." I thought. "I have a hangover." I kicked off the covers, and sat on the edge of my bed, my head in my hands. "This doesn't make sense," I thought. "I drank two beers in four ...

I'll have to remember to visit Ficlets...maybe I'll get some feedback on some of my short work!
for halloween: they don't come out at night
Back in March, I wrote about this cool website called Ficlets: From Scalzi (who else?) comes a collaborative short fiction site for writers, called Ficlets: What does "collaborative short fiction" mean in this case? Simple: You, as a writer, post a very short (not more than 1,024 characters) pie...

That's some pretty awesome imagery conveyed in just two small paragraphs. I like to write short fiction, but I find flash fiction easier. I'm writing one now (it may not turn into flash fiction) about a family who owns a boat rental place on a lake (haven't decided which lake yet), and they have some problems with the retrieval of some jet skis (when the main char. finds them, he sees some bullet holes in one of them, and the other is capsized). The story escalates from there. I'm hoping it turns out good!
So yeah, back to my original point. Fiction like that guy wrote is good to feed off of if you're looking for some inspiration. Good stuff.
fastfiction from internet jesus
Warren Ellis wrote a pretty fantastic short short story called Jack Baby that I saw yesterday: I dipped the old jar down into the creeping slurry and scooped a pint of shit-water out of the Thames, down where the sewers meet the river. It's come to this, I said to no-one: making jenkem rather th...
