Editor's Note: You all remember The Festival up in Maine earlier this summer? Well I had a blog post ready to go but turns out I forgot to hit "publish.' Since I've been lazy in posting anything this summer, here's my long lost review at the time, just for the... Continue reading

I kicked off the summer beerfest season with the big granddaddy fest of the east coast, Beer Advocate's American Craft Beer Fest (ACBF). Here are my quick hitter thoughts of the Saturday night session. Continue reading

The opening of Mystic Brewery's wonderful tasting room yesterday gave me a beer epiphany of sorts. So many of us Boston beer geeks drive hours to places like Warren, VT or Portland, ME in search of beer nirvana. But between Night Shift, Idle Hands and now Mystic, do we now... Continue reading

Since I'm six days late in even writing this post, what chance do I have in actually achieving these beer resolutions for the new year? Regardless, here's a Mix Six of them for 2013, Continue reading

Get yourself to Night Shift Brewing in Everett and fill a few growlers of their Citranation while you still can. They describe this as a belgian double IPA, but I only get faint belgian characteristics. It's the wonderful gush of grapefruit flavor that dominates the glass, masking the 9.2 % ABV that it clocks in at. Continue reading

Hey there Rob, thanks for checking in. What I like from you guys - besides the beer - is that you all seem so genuine. Good guys. Livin' the dream and all. And you're in my backyard (I'm in Melrose). So I'm a fan. The enthusiasm rubs off on me. I've been meaning to do a volunteer bottling night with you guys some time, as it would be good blog fodder just for the experience. One of you guys said your DIPA with Citra is coming soon? Put me down for a volunteer on that bottling night. And, fixed the link! - Sean (Packie)
Huh, no kidding? Looks like our evenings nearly mirrored each other. (We were at Kendall too.) Yeah the last of the HF Foster went around 6:30 or so.
Toggle Commented Dec 4, 2012 on My Zwanze Day Surprise Party at Packie McHopHead
Apparently once a year, Cantillon Brewery - the historically renowned Belgian brewer of the finest and most unique lambics in the world - delivers a special keg of Zwanze rhubarb-laced brew to approximately 35 hand-selected bars around the world. At precisely 3 pm Eastern Time, everyone lucky enough to be inside these bars simultaneously toasts with a 6 oz. glass of this special concoction. Continue reading

I stand corrected then on the "basement" location. Edited.
The venue was a pretty stark contrast to every other craft beer event I've ever been to. But no disrespect to the Legion Posts and the work you all do, that was not the intent. I did a slight edit as I agree 'dark, dirty, dingy' may have been a bit over the top.
Hi Mark, thanks for checking out the blog! I had a great time on Friday, will definitely be attending the next fest....yup, knew about the full pint option, just forgot to mention, I'll update it now....will definitely think about volunteering, would make good blog fodder!
But the problem is that casks are so few and far between, even in good beer bars. That's why I was so intrigued this past Friday night to finally attend NERAX - a.k.a. the New England Real Ale Exhibition, the longest running cask beer festival in the country. Come to think of it, it's the only one that I've ever heard of in the area. Continue reading

Welcome to the Hurricane Sandy edition of the Mix Six, starting with my thoughts on my new undisputed No. 1 go-to beer of the moment: 1. Jack's Abby Hoponius Union - Every time I pop a bottle of this stuff, I appreciate it more and more. And I've been popping... Continue reading

Hey there Bryan. Yeah, I'm sure they are good guys and all, but maybe just not all that outgoing or self aware of how they come off sometimes? Good to know they seemed interested in talking to you guys at Novare Res. (And I've had that King Titus - it's good stuff.) If they happen to see this post, hopefully it just helps make them more aware of how outsiders see them when they visit the brewery and they make some adjustments. Hope you are weathering the storm ok.
Thanks for the feedback Jack. I was wondering if this was just an off day for them, but seems like it's a more common experience with them. That's too bad. I mean, it's beer - cheer up guys!
I'd venture to guess that the Packie McHopHead kids have been inside of more brewpubs than your typical American family. I mean, you've got to eat, right? Might as well be at an establishment that serves exceptional craft brews. But touring a microbrewery facility with the family? That's taking it... Continue reading

OK, a bunch of things going on here on Tyler's latest whiteboard message hanging on the front of his bedroom door. 1. He's having a 50 percent off sale, slashing the previous room entry fee from $9.99 to $4.99. Good... Continue reading

This week's Mix Six edition is brought to you by the great brewing state of Maine, where I lucked into some unexpected gems, old favorites and one unfortunate drain pour while vacationing this past week on the south coast. 1. Maine Brewing Company/Lunch - Well, I couldn't have timed this... Continue reading

Shhh. Don't tell anyone this. Because I don't want anyone to know. But last night I undoubtedly went to the best beer event that will happen this year. Seriously, where the hell where you last night? I mean, it was all right there for the taking. An all-time first-ballot-MVP line... Continue reading

My Mix Six column this week isn’t made up of beers but of steller beer events that I’m getting geeked up for in the coming weeks. So I guess this is also a sort of preview of blog posts to come: 1. Mamma Said Hop You Out @ Gordon’s Fine... Continue reading

So I’m noticing a little beer community backlash right now building against “collaboration beers.” Partly because few seem worth the trouble, partly because many chalk them up to marketing gimmicks. But mainly, it’s just starting to get played out. Everyone’s doing them now. So naturally, the cool kids don’t think... Continue reading

I'm just realizing some you still don’t know what a ‘Packie’ is, do you? Sorry bout that, I never explained to the out-of-staters: Here in good ol’ Massachusetts, ‘packie’ is an old slang term for a beer or liquor store. (In longer form, a ‘package store.’) Why? I dunno. I’m... Continue reading

So look, I’m gonna level with you. I’m not going to be very good at writing beer reviews on this blog. It’s just not gonna be my main thing here. My amateur tongue can’t sense things like cardboard or horse blanket or dandelions. I’m not gonna wax poetic on the... Continue reading

Here's a new occasional feature called "The Mix Six' -- a random but carefully selected collection of beers and beer thoughts that are brewing in my mind of late: Here's the bottle of Vera Mae I enjoyed, courtesy of Dave at the Publick House. I didn't happen to notice if... Continue reading

Ok fine, I'll freely admit it. I'm a beer rankings whore. There, I said it. Yes, the beer ranking lists on Beer Advocate, Rate Beer and other communities can directly affect my enjoyment and experience of a beer. Sad but true. I'm willing to bet other beer geeks do too... Continue reading
