Recently the Philippines Daily Inquirer fell foul of a hoax "Time" magazine cover naming President Aquino as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. They duly tucked their tail between their legs and apologised for being duped. Yesterday that didn't prevent a plethora of journalists, bloggers, and... Continue reading

"Mayon volcano is an enigmatic personality. The more she does this, the more they will come. The more the danger, the more the tourists." So says Albay Governor Joey Salceda, after Mount Mayon gave a 73-second explosion killing five climbers on 7th May 2013. The state seismologist said the explosion... Continue reading

In 1770 Captain Cook's HMS Endeavour grounded on the unchartered waters of the Great Barrier Reef and got stuck. Through exceptional seamanship he lightened his load and with a severely damaged hull was able to free his ship, and nurse her towards a safe harbour for repairs. He had no... Continue reading

Thank you for your intelligent analysis Markuva, you have made some interesting points, and I agree about the national certification and branding.

Hey! Smoking is bad for your health! The Via Crucis is the re-enactment of Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday. Held in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines, it has become famous for people being nailed to the cross. There are currently 34 men enlisted to participate, with an estimated 50,000 people, from... Cheers Spook. Always nice to see an old post rise from it's dormant state. Cor blimey! Lavverly - Gawd bless ya!
Good luck with it Eric. Let me know how you get on! Sounds like precious stuff.
It suddenly occurred to me to seek the history of "St Vitus Dance" and I was really surprised to see the similarities today. The phrase was clearly very common in previous generations, and perhaps future ones will call it the "Harlem Shake". Thanks for your story Charlino - I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one accused of it.

"Get off! This is the Harlem Shake not Gangnam!" There's an outbreak of exhibitionism going on, which involves people losing their sanity and gyrating like demented chimpanzees. There used to be a medical term for this: St Vitus' Dance. Also known as "Dancing Mania", it was a social phenomenon that... Continue reading

Thank you Eastwood for that advice. I'm familiar with the ring pull devices you refer to, but they are not an option in this case, and as my post was about an "organic" specific brand there isn't much I can do about it. I'd forgotten this post - I appreciate being reminded about it, although what possessed me to write it in the first place two years ago, I know not!

Thank you for your input Charlino. It's rather ironic that it takes an outspoken Queen's consort to raise an important issue which his hypocritical and callous government hasn't the bottle to neither identify or appreciate.
I failed to mention in this post that in the previous April I arrived in Rome with a few relatives, and we took a cab to our hotel. The driver drove like crazy, and I was holding on for grim life, but after dropping us off, he returned thirty minutes later with a bag which we mislaid. It was an important one - with medicines. No one was aware of it until the hotel receptionist brought it to my attention - the driver didn't hang around - he just returned it and left. Had I been there at the time I would have given him a reward in gratitude. I certainly didn't call the press. But I did leave something for him when I checked out - because the chances were he was known to the hotel and they would have give him it. A significant honest act of kindness from a Rome taxi driver with no fuss or expectations. It probably happens all the time but the Italians don't see a need to broadcast such things! Thanks very much for your comments. I appreciate your input.

Hear Hear! And thank you for your erudite comment. Our nurses are greatly undervalued, and you're right - it is a vocation first and foremost and we do not reward them sufficiently. Nor should it matter a jot where they come from. All that matters is that they matter.

Renowned for his jokey persona he tends to dispel the restrictions of diplomatic speak and just pops up with the first thing which enters... Continue reading

In September 2011 I wrote about the largest saltwater crocodile captured alive (King Croc Down Mindanao Way). That post highlighted the efforts of the villagers in a remote area of Mindanao in the Philippines, to hunt down the creature because it was extremely dangerous. Having ensnared it, the local mayor... Continue reading

Another end of the world scenario hoves into view - not quite Armageddon but one which will cause much inconvenience. The warnings of a solar superstorm are particularly relevant today. They occur every hundred years or so and the last one was back in 1859. The world was in gas-light... Continue reading
