This isn't something that just actors feel about their profession. A friend of mine who worked in fine arts (painting) said he realized one day that what he'd signed up for was in fact a lonely profession. I'm an academic philosopher, and it's a lot that way for me too, except that it's books, a word processor, and a really difficult intellectual problem.
