The comedians were promoting a charity event for one thing. And they were a lot funnier than the bad joke the Royals have become this season. I'd suggest Sally consider lightening up, but she's obviously incapable. It was just an inning, dear, take a powder.
Just baseball, please
On Friday night, June 4, I sat down to watch the Royals vs. Tigers baseball game on TV. Instead, I received a barrage of Joel Goldberg and some comedians taking up the whole second inning. I don’t know whether I am the only one who is offended by this. If I want to see comedians, there are plen...
They've got a great federal prosecutor down there, Jim Letten. He's the one that finally put Gov. Edwin Edwards away. Thank god he's on the police dept. Otherwise these criminals would get away with what they did.
It was a nightmare after Katrina, but that doesn't mean people aren't responsible for their actions.
New Orleans cops indicted in man's death
In New Orleans, a grand jury has indicted five police officers -- three current, two former -- in the shooting death of a man after Hurricane Katrina. The body of that man, Henry Glover, was later found in a burned car; federal authorities allege that officers set that fire, the Times-Picayune r...
I just always think it's weird that you see these not on dangerous curves or at intersections or onramps, but our in the wide open spaces where I can't imagine how a fatal accident occurred in the first place. Asleep at the wheel?
How should states handle roadside memorials?
If you do much driving outside the city, it's hard to go 10 miles without seeing a roadside memorial -- typically, a white cross or sign planted at the spot where another motorist died. In a lot of places, these tributes are technically against the law, USA Today reports. Transportation experts...
And if we need fake bravado we'll call chalvey.
A matter of time
Iran, North Korea, Russia, China, and Brazil laugh at us while we continue to try to “lead by example” and hope they will follow. Our latest announcement that we will disclose any missile testing follows a continued line of thinking that everyone wants to get rid of nuclear weapons. Many countr...
Apologies are pointless when they are demanded by people who don't have a right to demand them. Radio shock jocks are in the business of being offensive. I don't like it either, so I don't listen to them.
‘Comedy’ offensive
While driving to work, I tune into KBEQ and the “Morning Drive.” Although most of the banter between hosts is inane, a recent interview with a comedian was insensitive, abhorrent and offensive. A subject was the appropriateness of telling jokes about two events, Sept. 11 and the Holocaust. Th...
Judy, your comments are offensive to me and I demand a pointless apology.

And smokers please remember, the world is not your ashtray.
Litter defiles KC
Recent letter writers have called attention to Kansas City’s trash problem. Seeing all the trash along our roadways disgusts and angers me, and I think something should be done to get Kansas City residents to wake up to the effect this has on visitors to our city. The trash shows people have no ...
Slugger's mom must have never told him "It's all fun and games until somebody gets their eye put out."
TMZ: Royals mascot threw hot dog in fan's eye, suit claims
Again, not a crime story, just an interesting lawsuit. The fan says he ended up with a detached retina, TMZ reports. (The hot dog in question was thrown, not fired from an air gun -- I got that wrong in an earlier version.) Here's a PDF of the lawsuit.
Older men seeking younger women are called 'normal.'
Cougars and Tigers
If older women seeking younger men are called "cougars," then could it be said that older men seeking younger women could be called "Tigers?" Jack L. Hatchitt Lee’s Summit
Thanks, Jeff, for letting the commenters prove your point.
Socialism, anyone?
I received an excellent education from a large and partially public-funded university, so I know what the word "socialist" means. However, if I didn’t know and I had to infer a definition solely from the context of say, letters in The Kansas City Star, then I guess I would define it as this: "S...
Yeah federal agents in black helicopters forced me to fast for a month in observance of Ramadan. Help!
Politically incorrect Christmas
We live in a country that was supposedly founded on the freedom of religion. It has now evolved to be politically incorrect to have any mention of the birth of Jesus. But we must celebrate all of the customs of immigrants such as Cinco de Mayo, Ramadan and any other custom that has been imported...
Oh the poor beleaguered Christians, wallowing in victimhood again! The era of martyrdom ended a long time ago, so, as the saying goes, get off the cross, we need the wood. The majority of the population identifies as Christian, and Church leaders have no compunction about turning their religious beliefs into civic law. But those mean athiests are so powerful and threatening, even though they make up a tiny percentage of the population. Get over yourselves. Believe in your sky wizard all you want, and I will defend your right to do so, but leave history and its cousin, politics, out of it, ok?
When was Jesus born? 12-5/6-09
The other day here (in fact for several days), some of the comments focused on what Christian traditions may have had roots in pagan or other cultures and what were original with early followers of Jesus. It's an intriguing topic -- though not one that makes or breaks the faith. Modern schola...
Why not hand people a list of approved greetings before they are allowed to address you? And by the way are people allowed to acknowledge the enormous chip on your shoulder, or are they supposed to pretend it doesn't exist? Just asking....
Veterans Day isn’t ‘happy’
First, I would like to say thank you to those few citizens of this country who thanked me on this past Veterans Day. I take offense, however, at the use of “happy” when it is associated with Veterans Day. Happy is a word one associates with birthdays, anniversaries or other days of joy. Veteran...
Yes, let's reinstitute the draft. Then public support for these wars of choice would evaporate overnight. If people really thought their own family members would start being killed and maimed overseas so that the war profiteers can continue to loot the US treasury, military adventurism might finally come to a halt.
Bring back the draft
Let’s get real with our two-war strategy. We need national service with a draft component. Insurgency strategies deal with hearts and minds of the affected population(s). We are also an affected population but disproportionately, resulting in too much theorizing and even sympathizing. We need m...
Rush says the Constitution guarantees me the right to poison other people and then blame them for getting sick. When he uses the term 'personal responsibility' my body gets all tingly, my brain stops working, and all I can do is spout nonsense about 'libs.' Now don't make me show you my CCW.
‘Wall of smoke’ at Arrowhead
I concur with Harold Phillips (10/27, Letters, “No one should have to breathe smoke”). I think it is absolutely barbaric that we still live in a society where it is acceptable to actually blow physical particles of smoke into the air and let them land on someone else. At the Chiefs games the st...
Conservatives have spent decades trying to make second-class citizens out of, at various times, women, the working poor, gays, immigrants, anyone who isn't a WASP, etc. So they got voted out of power. Boo frigging hoo.
Rams need Rush Limbaugh
Liberals are trying their best to make conservatives into second-class citizens. If you believe what our Founding Fathers believed in, such as personal responsibility, the right to succeed (or fail), the right to life, limited government and, with God’s help, a better nation, then you are labele...
Those "who receive Social Security may have to forgo the COLA increase" because the cost of living hasn't increased. What part of 'cost of living adjustment' do you not understand? Did you think it was your soft drink budget?
Freeze Congress’ pay, too
We have all heard that there will be no cost of living increase in Social Security checks for seniors in 2010 and possibly two or three years in the future. It is now time for our senators and congressmen to step forward and vote not to give themselves an increase in pay for the same years. It h...
I don't understand the distinction the writer is trying make between a spiritual ceremony and a ritual.
And regarding charging for attending "Judeo-Christian" (whatever that is) ceremonies, perhaps the writer is unfamiliar with the concept of the collection plate?
Sweat lodge ceremony
The article written by Felicia Fonseca and Bob Christie (10/18, National/Local, “Negative image for guru”) regarding the Arizona sweat lodge was minimally accurate about the ceremony itself and left out a hugely important factor. Firstly, it is a Native American spiritual ceremony, not a ritual....
Somehow I don't recall 'Blessed are the insurance companies, for they shall inherit our wealth' being part of the Sermon on the Mount.
Bishops’ stance on health reform
Albert De Zutter (10/5, Opinion, “As I See It: On health reform, bishops misread church teaching”) took on the wrong bishops in regard to the principle of subsidiarity. Our local bishops, Joseph Naumann and Robert Finn, have it right. Pope John Paul II wrote: “By intervening directly and depri...
I believe the expression 'hogtied' is offensive to hogs.
Pa. police rescue hogtied naked man
The Arizona resident was reportedly in the Pittsburgh area for "drug-related activities," police say. I'm sorry, but they need to make this a public service announcement. I think those "Anti-Drug" and "This is your brain on drugs" commercials are very cute ... but nothing will teach kids to ...
Why don't those DUI traffic stops ever catch sex-traffickers?
Independence sting turns up sex-trafficking victim, 2 pregnant women
Just a little more information about Independence's big prostitution sting from the other day, which hauled in 27 suspects. Among them: two pregnant women. Police also say they helped rescue a woman they believe was the victim of sex-trafficking.
What's a "galactic thinker"?
Patriot Act prevents terror
It was precisely because of the Patriot Act and the presidential orders put into effect by the Bush administration that the FBI was able to ferret out the would-be backpack bomber, Najibullah Zazi. The Pollyanna suggestion that the “vigilant citizen,” as put forth by the galactic thinkers who in...
Obviously some of the Obama haters are racists. Anyone who denies this is delusional. The question is how must of the opposition to Obama contains an element of racism. Carter said "an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity" toward Obama was based on his race. I think the "intensely demonstrated" part is crucial. People who are opposed to policies generally do not go so far as to question the legitimacy of the person they disagree with. The birthers and the "I want my America back" people and the people recommending secession and/or civil war are not just disagreeing with his policies.
Carter’s racism remark
I think most Americans resent ex-President Jimmy Carter saying that much of the criticism of President Obama is “based on racism.” If he feels that way, maybe there is something wrong with him. A projection of hidden guilt perhaps? America, a predominately white country, elected Obama. If whit...
Making the poor pay! Why didn't Obama think of that? Let's make them pay for food stamps too. And Medicare, let's make the old folks pay full price for medical treatment. There, problem solved. Now let's go back to jawing about abortion, gays, and guns.
Cost of ER to taxpayers
It has been reported that uninsured people who go to the emergency room for treatment cost the rest of us approximately $1,000 annually. A possible solution to this problem is to have the hospital report to the Internal Revenue Service all the individual’s charges that the rest of us have to abs...
Wait, you mean you went to see a movie! And the critic didn't like it but you did? Awesome, that never happens!
Thumbs-up for ‘All About Steve’
In spite of The Star’s terrible review of “All About Steve,” (9/4, FYI), my friend and I decided to see it. We thought, “How bad could it be?” Unfortunately, when I’ve asked myself that question in the past, I’ve had it brutally answered. When we arrived at the movie, we noticed quite a few othe...
