If you are looking for something to do the next time your are in NYC, then the NY High Line might be a fun, FREE, outdoor choice. Check out the pictures in this Here We Are photo album for sights, info, and tips. Tips to help you enjoy your day: Wear: sunscreen, a hat, good walking shoes. While there are a few shady respites, you are very exposed to the sun throughout the journey. Bring: a camera - there are lots of photo opportunities along the way. "Heads Up" = Look Down: There are funky curbs along the outer portions in parts of the path. I saw a lot of people tripping or getting their ankles caught. Check out the picture in the photo album of one of these, note how they are raised above the grade (drainage perhaps?). Breathe!: Yes, the gardens scents are fresh and green. You might even catch a cool breeze off the Hudson River. Brochures: If you can't find one, check the railings... The streets and locales are marked along the route. Time: I walked at a leisurely stroll and it took about an hour and a half down and back. Eats: There are food vendors on the path; the ice pops are a refreshing treat. If you need to get out of the sun, or want to sit for... Continue »

It's blueberry season! Not only are blueberries healthy, they are the easiest fruit to bake with because you don't have to slice, dice, peel, pit, core, or chop anything. Just wash and dry them, pick out the mushy ones, and you are on your way. If you are looking for an easy, quick recipe to put those extra blueberries to tasty use, then look no more. Try my sister-in-law, Lynn's, "Blueberry Easy-As-Pie" recipe. Simple, and simply delicious! Pie Ingredients: 1 Pillsbury Pie Crust (use 1 of the 2 dough sheets) 2 pints fresh blueberries 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 Tablespoons corn starch or flour Crumb Topping: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup softened butter (1/2 stick)(NOT melted) Dash cinnamon Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cover a cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper (makes for an easy clean-up). Unroll one pie crust into a 9 inch pie plate and crimp the edges. In a bowl, toss together the blueberries, sugar, and corn starch/flour; then pour into the pie plate. For the crumb topping, mix the flour and cinnamon in a bowl; add the sugar. Cut in the butter using a fork to combine until it is a "crumbly" mixture. Pour topping mixture over pie. Put pie into oven on covered cookie sheet on the bottom shelf. Bake 45 - 60 minutes until... Anyone can tell you that fact is different from fancy, but this becomes a bit thornier when it comes time to live it. We grow up on romantic comedies, urban legends, fairytales, media threats and promises and then we're shot into the "real world” and expected to live there. What’s more, the whole separating truth from whimsy is even harder for the writer who is paid to keep one foot in the hovering what if. I know my way around fiction, but I’m frequently lost in reality. It seems like everyone has so much advice to give but is silent... Continue »

Announcements, Updates, & Reminders ANNOUNCEMENTS Bees 'r Buzzin': Last month, we switched it up by deciding to focus on more reviews for May, June, & July. When I checked my list of 15 items on deck for review, 4 of them are Burt's Bees products. Not all of the pending reviews are beauty products, but since the bees 'r buzzin' this spring, you'll see a honeycomb of Burt's Bees on Here We Are to get you ready for summer. No Birds on The Line: This month, there are no new radio shows scheduled for either Here We Are on The Radio or Chick Flick Chat. The chicks are researching several movies - AKA "watching" (I love this job!) - to find a list of good ones for future chats; and my legal-eagle guest is unable to come in for a landing, so we are rescheduling the Trademark show. NOTE: Email us if you have a good movie suggestion for CFC... as always, we love to hear from you! UPDATES Gifts 'r Flying About: We are waiting on a response from the May gift recipient who will receive a Blue Q flower motif shopper bag. June's gift is a similar tote bag, but with a different design - surprise - it's a fanciful bird motif! NOTE: Email subscribers, please remember to check an email from HWA... Continue »

Part 9 of the HWA Series, Live Your Life Out Loud Every day is an opportunity to learn life lessons from each other. After watching the news reports about the life and passing of Geraldine Ferraro, a pattern of strength and determination emerged. Regardless of one's political position, as women, we can all learn from the way she lived her life. 1. She didn't change herself to satisfy an unfair double standard 2. She spoke her mind regardless of any impending backlash 3. She had the courage to face harsh criticism and keep going 4. She "unlocked" a large door for other women to kick open 5. She didn't retreat when actions by family members could have tainted her reputation 6. She kept going after a hard fight and an even harder loss 7. She stayed true to herself, stepping out of the shadow of her running mate 8. She maintained her own identity while raising a family 9. She successfully balanced public and private life 10. She didn't let a disease define her legacy For Geraldine Ferraro, and the multitude of other women that have struggled to unlock the doors, thank you for helping the rest of us to live our lives out loud. As I watch my daughter navigate the minefields of Junior High, I am struck by the level of competitiveness among the girls. Although they were once great friends, it seems that hormones and boys have kicked things up quite a bit. Many girls are now struggling to find their place. And if they have to step on Sally, Mary or Sarah on their way to finding the place they want in Junior High, then that is acceptable to them. In fact, stepping on others during the journey is even better if it means the other girls have to take a... Continue »

At its core, Here We Are is about the value of "time" in all its meaning and intangibility. As the devastating earthquake that ravaged Japan today ripples its energy across the world, one's appreciation for life, love, and each moment is shaken awake with clarity. Along with thoughts and prayers, I offer the wise words of Grenville Kleiser at a time when so many are in need... There are fine things which you mean to do some day, under what you think will be more favorable circumstances. But the only time that is surely yours is the present, hence this is the time to speak the word of appreciation and sympathy, to do the generous deed, to forgive the fault of a thoughtless friend, to sacrifice self a little more for others. Today is the day in which to express your noblest qualities of mind and heart, to do at least one worthy thing which you have long postponed, and to use your God-given abilities for the enrichment of someone less fortunate. Today you can make your life - significant and worthwhile. The present is yours to do with as you will. Continue »
