Net neutrality has been a hot topic for a long time.
Unfortunately the Irish government and its officers like to go for the media soundbites and keep rehashing certain catchphrases. When it comes to actually doing anything about it they don't seem to want to actually engage.
Google, Microsoft 'should pay for Ireland's broadband roll-out': Eircom exec
Last Friday evening, a senior Eircom executive (John McKeon, director of Eircom Wholesale) made an audacious pitch. Speaking at the annual Ibec telecoms ball, he told the crowd of telecoms bosses that it was time to look again at how Ireland's broadband roll-out was funded. His proposal: that Go...
Challenging it now is opportune, as it still isn't on the statute books.
Challenge to data retention law gains momentum
Over on Digital Rights Ireland, TJ McIntyre posts about the latest developments in DRI's campaign to roll back (or at least soften) the state's data retention laws. More than that, the organisation has received assent from the High Court for a challenge to European data retention law. So far, th...
We made it pretty simple.
Some staff you'll get via firstname@ , but since we ended up with multiple people with the same firstname we also have firstname.lastname@ - which is pretty logical
Using an underscore in an email address is stupid.
The other option, of course, is to use a .tel.
You can find most of my contact details on my .tel and if I trust you I'll share even more of them :)
How to annoy business contacts: hide your email address
Today, I attempted to email someone in the tech industry. Knowing his company website's URL, I assumed that if I simply put his first name in front of it (eg Sean@company.ie), that this would do the trick. Wrong. "UNDELIVERABLE," tutted my 'system administrator'. Okay, I thought, let's try firstn...
Well I'm in Carlow ...
And I know there are other people out there ..
Foursquare from Elsewhere
I STARTED NOTICING issues with Foursquare earlier today, encountering 504 errors and the crying mayor at left. That's all to be expected when companies push out infrastructural changes. After a few hours of the crying princess, Foursquare returned to my handset with a new granularity. Specifical...

Nice play on words :)
Yeah :) There's a big military museum there, but the only bit I got to see was that one tank
Talk about badly worded!
Eircom outage a result of being 'deliberately targeted', says Eircom
There have been lots of reports and rumours circulating over the past week about attacks on Eircom's network. This morning, Eircom has addressed one aspect of this -- an outage that occurred yesterday -- with the following statement. "Last night Eircom.net customers experienced significant conge...
The problem is how you decide to draw the line.
Suppose you suspect someone of doing something and you tap their phone. You then find out that they hadn't actually done anything wrong.
Where does that leave you?
Why journalists tapping into mobile voicemail is sometimes justified
The scandal going on in Britain with News Of The World journalists tapping into celebrities' mobile voicemail accounts throws up some interesting ethical questions. Without a doubt, tapping into a celebrity's unprotected voicemail to root for gossip is wrong and should not be tolerated. But can ...
MFE is "ok", but you'd be better off getting RoadSync instead. See my review:

Nokia E71 Exchange Services
ONE OF OUR UPGRADE options is the Nokia E71 and we may get one if we believe we can hook it into a tightly-controlled Exchange email account. With Nokia's Mail for Exchange software, the E71 becomes a true push email experience. You need to download free business software to get the official Ma...

Michele's debt collection woes
As I write, Michele Neylon is on Joe Duffy ('Mick' as he's being called). The subject matter: a rogue debt-collection company that Michele engaged to try and get some bad debts. Apparently the company made a hames of paperwork that Michele gave them and then wouldn't pay him back his deposit.Goo...
And they've all been warned by the advertising standards people to stop misleading people .. they're only hurting themselves in the long run
Perlico: a textbook example of a misleading broadband ad
Take a quick look at this ad. Are you under the impression that you can buy a broadband package from this company for €6? If so, would that be because you didn't see the tiny, tiny print which whispered "in a bundle" and which results in the actual price being an altogether less salivating €46...
Sounds like a lot of the idiot sales people who try to sell me advertising space or random products / services we have no need for
Text 100 shuts down its 'Eire' operations
Text 100 is closing its Irish office. At its peak, it was the largest tech-orientated PR firm in Ireland. Now it has one part-timer, servicing three tech clients: LG, Lenovo and IBM. These companies will now be represented in 'Eire' by Text's UK office. I have a bad experience of UK PR offices....

Overall I thought it was very useful and interesting.
Anil Dash is a very capable presenter and his presentation style is very engaging
The case studies were interesting, though it would have been of more use to see a few examples of smaller businesses making use of social media on a limited budget. Comcast, for example, probably spend more on toilet paper per year than many small businesses turnover!
The more interesting element in many respects was the post-presentation question and answer session and it was a pity that this was not extended.

Five Years with Anil Dash
I'd be remiss if I let the anniversary of Anil's five years [1] at Six Apart pass without a post here on Dollarshort. Especially since Valleywag already mentioned his dedication in their own special way. Whether you like Anil Dash or not, few can honestly doubt his passion for blogging and for...

It's always nice to see companies grow, especially when their founders still try to take an interest in their individual clients. The new moves for 6A will be very interesting to follow and I hope they are a big success

More About Roots & Growth
The first few paragraphs of our news post about the launch of Six Apart Services and Six Apart Media do quite a nice job of connecting the work we did in the early years to the direction we're going in today. While Six Apart has come a long way since our core business model was all about "recentl...
