Given the "search results" affair unveiled this week between Bing and Google, one wonders if Google will claim that Microsoft is copying their plans to dominate the world through free, cloud apps... Starting today, people in over 150 more countries can use the Web Apps to view, edit, and share Office documents from anywhere with a browser and an internet connection. This includes viewing, editing, and sharing Office document attachments in Hotmail. via news.softpedia.com The promise from Microsoft is that next month, the services designed to extend Office 2010 into the Cloud will reach global availability. Meanwhile, the Redmond company has made an immense leap forward in terms of internationalization by opening up Office Web Apps to users in an additional over 150 countries on top of the markets in which it had already been launched.

There's not much more to say about The Economist article other than it is funny and interesting to see how the Russian GDP is equivalent to the economy of Texas, or how the California GDP is equivalent to Italy's. Funny and good for a tweet or for a Facebook share, that is all. They have not included fundamental data about level of education, per capita productivity, access to health, GDP per capita, and a long list of variables that must be taken into account when comparing countries or regions in a more meaningful way. Another interesting exercise would be to compare China's GDP with the rest of the world, and see the evolution of that comparison over the last 20 years. via www.economist.com It has long been true that California on its own would rank as one of the biggest economies of the world. These days, it would rank eighth,...

Netflix yesterday announced they will be releasing their (stream-only) service in 43 countries of Center and South America, including Brazil, the biggest market in the region and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. As reported by one of the main newspapers in Brazil (article in Portuguese), Netflix will be partnering with Netmovies, an online movie rental service controlled by the American fund Tiger Management Corp. As a result of these news, Netflix's shares soared in the Nasdaq to an all-time high, taking the company to a whooping $ 15.1 Billion valuation. Last, as a long-term Netflix user, I hope this move brings more Brazilian and South American movies to US-based users as well - and not only crappy or dubbed ones... via blog.netflix.com We’re excited to share with you the news that later this year, Netflix will expand to 43 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean,...

The big question is: will Gmail users buy into this quick sharing? Google thinks so because it’s a part of the evolution from email, to IM, to status updates. It’s also, in their eyes, a part of the evolution to the next step, Google Wave. So far, the public has proven to be not ready for Wave yet. But Buzz might be the perfect tool in getting people to think about communicating in a way beyond email and IM. Or it may be another misstep in Google’s social quest. via techcrunch.com

Facebook claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day. This would mean at least 175m users every 24 hours… A considerable increase from the previous 120m. Twitter now has 75m user accounts, but only around 15m are active users on a regular basis. It’s still a fair increase from the estimated 6-10m global users from a few months ago. LinkedIn has over 50m members worldwide. This means an increase of around 1m members month-on-month since July/August last year. Facebook currently has in excess of 350 million active users on global basis. Six months ago, this was...

Even though Chroma doesn't give you full control over your sidebar you can still put a 300x250 ad above the profile module using Custom Sidebar and Custom CSS. The idea is to add padding to top of the sidebar column and then absolutely position the ad above the other modules. First, add the following to Custom Sidebar: <div class="custom-ad-module"> insert your ad code goes here </div> Then add this to Custom CSS: #beta-inner { padding-top: 270px; } .custom-ad-module { width: 300px; height: 250px; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; } That's it!
