Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess What does giving mean to you? Presents under a tree? Donations to a favorite charity? Saving a pet from life in a shelter or life on the streets? When we, at BlogPaws, think of Giving Month our mind automatically turns to "how can we... Continue reading

by: Carol Bryant Are you your dog’s owner, guardian, parent, caretaker, or something else? This is a hotly contested topic that seems to go round and round in news cycles. "Shaping social media excellence, influence and education one amazing pet parent at a time:" This is the BlogPaws mantra, so you know where the collective we at BlogPaws stand. The topic of “what do I call myself if a pet shares my life” hits the news wires from time to time. Earlier this year, one particular animal group declared that saying one is a pet’s owner demeans a pet and... Continue reading

Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess A local shelter is advertising "half-price pet adoptions for the holidays." I understand their wanting to get the pets adopted and get them into loving forever homes. I am conflicted though because I've written in the past about not giving pets as holiday gifts -- not puppies at Christmas or bunnies at Easter. Pets are not a gift to be given on a whim. It's not the same as giving an ugly sweater that can be returned or shoved into the back of your closet until the person who gave it to you visits... Continue reading

Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess Winter is in full swing as I write from my home office in New York. The weather forecast calls for up to 12 inches of snow by 6 am Sunday. The main benefit of winter (if I have to find one) is that Henrietta the Diva Poodle has a wardrobe that is beyond compare for the cold months. She'd be better served if she would wear the little pink suede booties, that happen to match mine, but she refuses. When the porch is salted I carry her up and down the steps because even... Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess Love it or hate it, the end of the old year and the ringing in of the new typically brings with it joyous celebrations for all you've accomplished or the drowning of your "wish I had dones" in cups of egg nog. A new year is a chance to rip off the cover from last year's calendar and start with a clean slate. Whether you call them "resolutions," "visions," "goals," or "intentions" I believe that most people at least take a few moments to reflect (when that New Year's Eve ball is dropping in... by: Carol Bryant It depends on what your definition of sexy is, but for me pet blogging is oh so sexy. Say what? If something is generally interesting or attractive, Merriam Webster says that’s sexy. Pet blogging is sexy. And I know it. I am not alone. Pet parents think so. And here’s the scoop on what’s coming in 2014 and beyond in the pet blogging world…(with a very special opportunity at the end of this post) A little back story: I have two bucket lists: one for myself and one for my dog. I did the same thing for... Continue reading

by: Carol Bryant Have you ever hovered over a "share this" button on someone's blog? There are more buttons there than on a control panel at NASA headquarters, right? From Facebook to Tumblr, G+ to Reddit, there are seriously scores of social media sites, so you need to be on ALL of them, right? Impossible. Why bother? A wise woman (thank you, Yvonne DiVita) time and again has reminded me now and then f the "people die from exposure" quote. So what is a blogger to do? Choices abound, time is limited, we're all busy beyond our eyeballs, and social... Continue reading

Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess When I see the pictures that scroll through my Facebook and Twitter feeds of pets in need of adoption, those that have been abused and stories of overcrowded shelters, it's all I can do to not "unfriend" or not follow those pages. It breaks my heart and honestly, if I could I'd probably bring even more pets into the house than I already have. I know I can't -- and not just because the Diva Poodle Henrietta would lose her mind -- but because I know I need to give attention to the pets... Continue reading

Post by Robbi Hess, BlogPaws Blog Manager There are two things that I know I can embrace with both arms -- funny pet videos and a pet food company like IAMS and its #ShakeItForward Campaign. This campaign kicked off with a goal that IAMS would donate 250,000 bowls of food... Continue reading

by: Carol Bryant Have you ever stopped to ask yourself this question: What do pet bloggers want for Christmas (or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, Just Because)? So what is it about pet bloggers in particular? I mean, there are millions of blogs these days and word has it that pet bloggers are taking the blogosphere by storm. If you've been to a BlogPaws Conference, you know the energy, enthusiasm, networking, idea exchange and layers of relationships that are formed. Pet bloggers in general are the industry’s rock stars. We celebrate the pet blogger here at BlogPaws: In fact, pet bloggers... Continue reading

Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess Social media tasks can take up literally hours a day, am I right? I know I can spend hours poking around Facebook, looking at recipes on Pinterest (that I will never make), attempting to figure out Instagram and talking with business professionals on LinkedIn. How do I ever get anything done, you may be wondering!? Because my job actually involves my being iactive in social media for my clients, it is a part of the job that I am in and out of social media platforms almost hourly throughout the day. How can you,... Continue reading

by: Carol Bryant "Yank his leash!" The words jolted through me like, well, a bolt of lightning. “Excuse me?” I quizzically looked at the man standing near the bins of dog treats. “Your dog is trying to eat the treats out of that bin,” he chided.” Yank his leash and give his neck a good tug.” Why do these situations seem to find me? I have no idea, but my path seems to cross that of dim-witted loud mouths now and again, and that’s putting it mildly. This incident happened about two weeks ago, but the aftermath of it stays... Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess With the frenzy of Black Friday and CyberMonday behind us what can we, as pet lovers, do to celebrate Giving Month? Believe it or not, at the top of the list is to gift a pet loving/pet blogging friend or family member with a registration for BlogPaws 2014. No, this is not simply shameless self promotion. Attendance at a BlogPaws conference can help the pet lover or pet blogger in your life (or yourself, for that matter) focus his or her talents on their pet blogging niche. BlogPaws conferences bring together pet lovers as... Continue reading

The calendar says December and that means it’s time for the BlogPaws Holiday Sweepstakes. One of the greatest gifts we can give our growing community of bloggers and microbloggers is that of education. Established in the summer of 2009, before anyone ever thought of bringing pet people together via social media, BlogPaws grew from a start of around 200 pet parents and brands, to the nearly 3,000 members in our community today. We continue to support all things pet, via our blogger outreach programs, our BlogPawsChats and BlogPawties on Twitter, and our national social media conference. We teach bloggers to... Post by Robbi Hess I'm not ashamed to admit when I make my shopping list for my friends and family for the holidays I also include items for my pets. Henrietta typically gets more than the four cats and Spenser, but then she likes to wear clothes and will also play with toys without shredding them the way Spenser does. The kitties are happy with new catnip mice and brand new scratching posts. When I think of this month's theme for BlogPaws I also think of the ways in which I could give back to my local shelter. We have... Continue reading

by: Carol Bryant Faster than a one-horse open sleigh, brighter than Rudolph’s nose, and quicker than you see Santa shimmy up and down a chimney, the holidays are here. Whether you rejoice and celebrate, groan and bicker, a little bit of both, or skip the holidays completely, chances are your readers are still tuning in. In fact, look around at your next holiday gathering: Whether it’s Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas Eve, chances are that someone, somewhere is checking their smartphone, texting a loved one, or perusing the latest news. Welcome to modern times: We take our technology wherever we go.... Continue reading

Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess It appears that winter has settled into the northeast. I was not, and am truly never, ready for it. It's easy for me to deal with it though: I dig my boots and mittens out of the drawers and pull my winter coats and scarves out of the closet. I am prepared as I will ever be. If you have pets, how do you prepare them for the colder months ahead? I know blustery, snowy days mean that Henrietta will be donning her jacket before she heads out the door. She refuses to go... Post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess I sometimes find myself, during the course of the week, not visiting or interacting as much on Facebook as I have in the past. Gasp! Want to know why and where I am? Actually, I've been where the pet parents are: The BlogPaws Community. While I do love my friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter and Pinterest, when I am looking for outright pet-centric discussions, I have been heading to the BlogPaws Community. This week, for example, Tom Collins (BlogPaws' Left Rear Paw) started a discussion about The Art of Cross Promotion. In... Continue reading
