And certainly not a good sign for the supposed rotation depth. The more I think about it the more I would not be surprised if the Sox fail to win 90 games. Then again when Theo was caught truth-telling he called it a bridge year.

You're dreaming if you think Bay's name won't or shouldn't keep coming up. Everytime the Sox offense struggles, and it will, Bay's name will come up. Him crushing the weaker NL pitching won't help either. More problematic for your perspective is the Sox would have signed him. They just didn't want the extra year. the last time they played that game? Damon. How'd that workout again?

The Sox are depending on one and two-year contracts for a reason - so they can let players go if they don't work out. Besides, who are they playing that's established and in their prime - i.e. worth having around for the next four years? I count Youkilis and Pedroia, and maybe Drew depending on how you view his health history. After that it's all questions marks. Martinez is excellent, but if he continues to have trouble throwing out 20% of runners, he's not a solution at the dish. That would be fine, if they weren't already overly clogged at 1B/3B/DH. So, more than half the lineup is a question mark. The Rays certainly don't have that problem. Nor do the Yankees. And that's the Sox direct competition.

Thank god Cashman replaced Matsui and Damon for better, younger players. Of course, NJ isn't a paragon of health but at DH they have plenty of coverage in Montero and even Miranda. Jeter's never given any reason to doubt his health. The only time he's missed significant time is because of a dislocated shoulder. JD Drew he ain't. The one thing the Yankees have is depth at catcher. Great job by Cashman in planning for the future while playing to win now.

Wait, so if the Sox are depending on Ortiz, then why were they ready to trade Lowell for a weak hitting 1B? The Yankees in 2008 missed the playoffs primarily because Posada got hurt and there was nothing behind him. That was the biggest difference on the team. Considering that V-Mart hasn't caught 120 games since 2007, and Varitek is a shell of his former self, they easily could be primed for a similar collapse. They're also depending on Scutaro to have another career year, Cameron not to fall off a cliff in the AL, Ellsbury and Pedroia not to regress further, Beltre to find himself, and Drew to stay healthy. That lineup is far from a sure thing. I see many more questions than obvious performances. But at least the defense will be good.

Wow, great cheap pickup for a veteran relief arm. And that's all he is. The Yanks are paying him less than Bruney is making. Given the relative youth in the pen, beyond Marte and Mo, this was a no-brained. With the starting depth there's no chance he will be a starter. Now theyvcan keep Hughes as a ready to go starter at The Office.

Why the need to hammer the guy over semantics? That's very lame. More importantly, he's right. It was maybe the greatest baserunning play in modern history. It certainly goes beyond a mere stolen base. Top 10? Definitely and all that is required by the maybe. A great base running play has everything to with the runner and exactly nothing to do with the pitcher.

It's very easy to trust Cashman when his last off-season resulted in #27 and when he just pulled off two heists this winter. Granderson is going to crush the ball in Yankee Stadium and where Comerica killed him. I absolutely love the fact that we'll be able to directly compare him with Damon's season. Grandy will be a five win player, even in LF.
