Whenever someone answers me with the expression, "but it's hard, or too hard," my response is, "yes it is. Now let's do it." We're an instant society that wants everything now and with little effort, but like so many folks have pointed out here, usually good things require hard work.

a point of clarification
Yesterday, I overheard some twentysomethings complaining about how much they hated their jobs. After a few minutes, it became clear that none of them took high school seriously, and at least a couple of them had dropped out of community college because it was, in their words, "too hard." I Twitt...
It...that's all I can say...It!

Words should mean something and not be tossed about like so much fluff. We have devalued the English language to the point that the word "love" is used to describe the attachment I have toward my children, and the roast beef sandwich I had for lunch. I'm a property manager for two town home communities and there are some signs that property managers put out that I just can't stand, they say "We love our residents." Ok, first, do you know some of my residents, second...do you know some of my residents?
That being said, You won't hear me tell my residents that I don't "love" them...:D

from the vault: the excellence incident
This was originally written years ago, when I was still finding my personal narrative voice, and still enjoyed the beefy goodness of a slaughtered bovine creature with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. I've cleaned it up and meddled with it a tiny bit, because I can't resist meddling with thin...
First, as I huddled in the room behind these adventurers and waited to see who would emerge victorious, a thought occurred to me. "People say THIS is a bad thing?"
I have done a little DMing and the idea of rewarding an out of the box idea snuck up on me my first time. I have fire imps and a low level wizard used "create water" right over one of their heads. At the time, I said it didn't do any damage, but later, I realized that he had been very creative with the meager skills he had at the time, so I learned my lesson.
I'm looking forward to hearing more.

and so the campaign begins... (Part II)
Over the weekend, I started a 4E campaign for my son Nolan and his friends. The plan is to take them through the entire Keep on the Shadowfell module, and then probably into Thunderspire Labyrinth, with possible detours into various level-appropriate Delves, or something from Monte Cook's awesom...
What makes this so funny is that much of the action from Star Trek was truly as campy as Monty. I really loved that show.

'tis a silly place
If you live in that part of the Venn Diagram where Star Trek and Monty Python overlap, (as I do) I suspect you will be glad you watched this. (epic thanks to Sean L. for e-mailing this to me.)
Being gracious in victory is equally as important as being a good loser. I look back in time at two men who could not have been farther apart politically and yet found a way to be friends: Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil. We could learn something from them.
Also, how about we spend that energy we want to waste yelling at each other, on building up our country and give our new president some help.

"...or else we didn't win anything at all."
I went to a local park and had lunch with a friend of mine today. It’s beautiful here, but we can tell that it’s Summer’s last attempt to hold Autumn at bay, and we’ll be suffering through the misery of sixty degree afternoons soon enough. There’s even rumor of an inch of rain before the end of ...
I haven't gotten to see this episode..yet! TV online is so great.
I just wanted to say that I have appreciated these posts because they have pulled the curtain back a bit and have given me a glimpse into how this story inside someone's head becomes the riveting entertainment I enjoy in my living room.

Criminal Minds: The Big Day Begins
This is the fifth of six posts (yes, I've added a post) about working on episode four, Paradise, during season four of Criminal Minds. I spoke with CliqueClack.com about some of my production experiences, and I have a gallery of images from the shoot at Flickr. Please note that I've done my best...
No more TV commercial, no more print ads, no town halls, no debates...all future elections will be decided by a d20 battle to the death with the guys from The Knights of the Dinner Table!

Earlier today, I went into Target to get some storage bins. While I was there, I paid a visit to the Halloween section. Because what I need is more Halloween decorations. Really. I do. Shut up. I do. After looking at the various decorations (mostly meh, but a few cool things) I rounded a corner ...
I will agree that father/son days at the ballpark are great, but since I have daughters, mine is father/daughter days, and it is fantastic to have a true baseball fan for a daughter, even if she always roots for the wrong teams...Braves and Red Sox.
Yankee fan here, but I say, GO Dodgers!

egad, a base tone denotes a bad age
WWdN reader Katie D. was inspired by yesterday's audiobook post, and sent me this incredibly awesome piece of art: Several readers sent me this story from the Mail Tribune about some of Stand By Me's locations. If you are up in Southern Oregon, and you want to see some of the train tracks and ...

great moments in instant messaging
Any geek can tell you what superpower they'd want to have. We rarely have to think about it, because most of us gave the question a lot of time and careful consideration when we weren't talking to girls during our youth. Earlier tonight, the subject came up in an IM conversation with my friend R...
I love Criminal Minds, I can't wait to see this.
I have to admit, I was a regular fan of that famous series you did a few years ago, but unlike many, I didn't have a problem with Wesley. Reading your blog has been interesting. Some of us average Joes forget that the folks we watch every week are just better paid average Joes. Thanks for your blog and your books.

From left to right: Me, Gabe, Kurtz, Tycho. This was pretty much as fantastic as I thought it would be, and I'm very proud of myself for never blowing a save versus "OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I GET TO DO THIS" the whole time we played. Check this out: we had so much fun, Jerry says that if th...
