Some thoughts on the Eagles franchise -- past, present and future
If the Eagles win a bunch of games next year, it's going to be by accident. "I think to be really successful in this league, you've got to be able to have the freedom to make short-term plans, mid-term plans and long-term plans and if you feel like you're under the gun where you're going to be g...
Ahem. DeSean wouldn't start over Pinkston?

Who is this? I don't remember Derek having magical photoshop powers.
If You're Going to Blame the Wide Nine ...
At least make sure it's the wide nine. Fred Jackson's comments after the game, as reported by Rich Hofmann and then cited as compelling evidence by everyone and his or her mother: "[The shovel pass] was something we wanted to take advantage of with them bringing that wide nine," said Bills runni...

Why Coaching Matters
In fairness, he inherited a unit that had issues. Maybe half the guys were plus performers, but the rest were sub-replacement level. The middle was especially bad. The front office didn't do much to help either. Oh sure, there was the one high-profile summer addition, but it's not like he's p...

Fair correction. I think this is the most logical answer to Derek's implied question. In style, personality, and more, Juan and Sean are basically opposite. I don't think that's a coincidence.
*Jauron probably would have been a better choice in this direction, but perhaps that's where #3 comes into play.
How Was This Supposed to Have Worked?
After the initial Castillo hiring bombshell, I tried to make sense of Andy's thinking. Clearly he hadn't gone out and looked for the guy who was most likely to succeed while coaching this defense. If he had, he'd have hired, you know, a guy who knew how to coach defense. I eventually settled o...
4) Reid learned the wrong lesson from Sean McDermott. That failure made him think that complicated schemes are unnecessary and all you need is a fired-up leader who won't be disrespected by his troops.

It's Not the Wide Nine, But How Good Is the Wide Nine?
Buried within those tables I posted last night is an incredible stat. Despite being cataclysmically bad in almost all defensive phases, the Eagles are on pace to rack up 60 sacks, easily the best mark since 2001 (as far back as I copy/pasted). The Eagles are set to achieve this feat despite swi...
What a f*cking horrible friday.
So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish
PRESIDENT SHEPHERD The environment got screwed. Nothing happened to you today, Sydney. Governing is choosing. Governing is prioritizing. I've made no secret of the fact that the crime bill was my top priority. SYDNEY Well then, congratulations. It's only taken you three years to put together ...
You're making me so exited about these totally realistic possibilities.
What's the Trajectory?
Since Sunday night, I've basically not thought about the Eagles. I read the posts and comments here, but for the most part, nothing was going to make me feel any better and as we're seeing in more than one area of discourse these days, blathering on after ... Well, you get my point. Anyway, wit...
So why doesn't that make it impressive that the Eagles found two this year who were able to step up and start down the stretch, if not perfectly?
And, In Conclusion, The End (And Not Just For The Year)
So they lost. Because of missed field goals. Because of a game-ending interception. Because they couldn't stop the run. Because of bad drops. Because of injuries. Because because because, because of the non-wonderful things they does. And so, another promising season goes down the drain. Wi...
I kind of agree, although it is tough to think about this after a loss like that. But unlike most years (even 2009), we didn't really come into this season with a deep-postseason-run-or-bust mentality. Mostly we thought this was for rebuilding, with upside of fighting for a Division Championship and/or a playoff spot.
In that light this seems great. The problem is that halfway through the season when Vick was superman we revised our expectations wayyy upwards.

I don't know what leads you to say that. Eagles have been historically fairly successful at getting top guys in free agency.

But isn't that a false choice? You say that the team fails to step back and rebuild, but they say they're rebuilding while staying competitive. Maybe that's not something most teams can do, but the Eagles have been ok at it over the last decade plus.
And other than not giving Kolb the snaps that would let us see if he can be the man, not sure that they did such a bad job rebuilding this year.

I'm not buying the pressure situation excuse. Akers has made as many as anyone not named Vinitari. I'm not happy he missed two kicks in a windy playoff environment, but that stuff is mostly luck and percentages with a guy like Akers. This isn't Nick Folk.

Oh Morton. Nice cherry-picking of bad 1st round picks going back to McDougle.

Sims and Cole are gone.
Bradley and Mikell will come back -- with their injury history/age neither will be expensive.
If the Eagles don't (want to) work out a long term deal with Vick, they will 100% franchise tag him -- assuming that exists.

That seems a little harsh. Realistically, the team's biggest needs:
1 RT/RG of starting caliber
1 Starting CB opposite Asante
1-2 Contributing DEs to pair with Graham and Cole
1 new Defensive Coordinator

Those underneath crossing routes have been open all game.
GB SHOT
At least we can expect the offense to play a little better in the second half. For the defense, I'm not sure if mean reversion would be better or worse than what we've seen so far.
Morelli's crew called fewer penalties than all but one other officiating crew this year.

Why is he still playing? He was watching on that TD too.

If I were a Packers fan right now I think I'd be a little worried that they hadn't scored nearly enough points considering the low the Eagles reached in that half.

Eagles Winning Strategy: Keep Vick In The Pocket
The actual pocket. The one that's centered about five yards behind the line of scrimmage, nestled inside all those big guys whose paychecks depends on keeping Vick safe. "But we can't pass protect," you say. True. We can't. But that hardly matters if, when the rushers get to Vick, he no long...
