My absolute favorite sort of photograph/painting is one where no one in the scene is looking at the same person or in the same direction à la Luncheon of the Boating Party. This photo captures that style perfectly and would... Continue »

A little over five years ago, I gave my notice to my last employer, Creative Commons. I'd been waiting for the day for over a year, but even with outside income from blogging it was pretty crazy at the time.... Continue »

Today is my last day at Six Apart. It's been 3.5 years with an outstandingly clever and humane group of unforgettable friends. I dedicate this Apperceptive/Six Apart-NYC montage to all of you. [WARNING] This is a long, photo-intensive, inside-joke-ridden post.... Continue »

Cartoonist Chuck Forsman made this terrific comic strip summary of Raiders of the Lost Ark rendered in the style of an old Popeye comic. The drawings are clever and look great, particularly this little moment and the part where old wax face gets his dues (shown above). Buy the full... Continue »

via bookofjoe.typepad.com I found this via Thrillist this morning. You'd have to copy down the 4 sets of numbers to keep with you at all times (or, gasp, memorize them), but it actually does work. After about 2 minutes of writing down my numbers, it only took 14 tries to open my gym lock. My skill at legerdemain may not be that of Houdini but I can now bust a basic lock off! Update: Here's a link to the full size image since the above is a bit small. Continue »

Rock! Hard! It's our favorite Norwegian strummer and singer, Ida Maria, back with a new tune, and the promise that her second album will be out, oh, sometime soon. While details surrounding all of this are still vague-ish, we can confirm that new track, Bad Karma, was a proper release in her homeland back in September. We can also justify that this song...is badass. Powerful riffs and deep drumkicks make this new jam quite the jam indeed, seeing Ms. Maria evoking a more traditionally classic rock arrangement as opposed to the unique intricacies seen and heard on debut album, Fortress... Because I know that -- in between begging for candy and hanging out with her friends -- my opportunities to get a good picture of Penelope on Halloween are limited, we decided to have a little Elizabeth Bennet dress rehearsal1 and photo shoot2 today. Here's a little background on her Halloween costume. She's Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice (the A&E version). The dress pattern is Girls' Regency Dress from Sense & Sensibility Patterns that I purchased and printed at home for $9.95. I found the fabric for the dress and the sashes at my local upcycling/recycling craft center for... Continue »

Tuesday and Thursday are days for Tea. The other days, we drink a cup of coffee in the morning. I do brew a fresh pot of drip coffee manually by using a Melitta style paper dripper and it's important to maintain temperature of water. If the temperature is too high, it makes coffee tastes more sour flavor. If it's too low, over extraction occurs and the coffee have a bitter taste. Watching steam from my drip kettle is the way to know the temperature and this is my zen moment. As waiting for the steam speed settled down and staring... Continue »

As we walked home from lunch (the only time we ventured out yesterday), Dav captured this. She was in a grumpy mood dealing with the wind, insisting on keeping her umbrella up even though the rain had lightened, but I thought she looked very cute. Continue »

Once upon a time, I was truly broke, and also profoundly stupid about it. Because I could not afford to pay them, I hid my credit card statements under the futon. This was a brilliant scheme, in no way doomed to collapse like the proverbial house of cards. Indeed, it wasn't really so much a house of cards as it was a pre-collapsed messy pile of cards, lightly shredded so as to provide an ideal home for rats to come nest inside. Possibly literally. That was all a long time ago, and I like to think I am much more... Continue »
