I had a friend in NYC that I thought could use a little pick-me-up this week. There's a service in NYC called Max Delivery that works like Kozmo used to back in the day and I thought it'd be fun to give it a try. It only works in Manhattan, but you can get food from the grocery or a number of restaurants delivered in under an hour. I found a bakery that had tasty looking cupcakes, added them to my order and checked out. After checkout however, I got a message that I would need to be physically present... Continue »

... it does not end well. I tried to dry my rain-soaked socks, discreetly, in the Six Apart office microwave. Now my socks are burnt, everyone is talking about the smell, and I'm kind of obligated to blog about it. Continue »

Dear Pat Robertson, I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people when they are down, so I'm all over that action. But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I'm no welcher. The way you put it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure, in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get something here on earth... Continue »

After five years working at the Paris office, I'm moving to San Francisco. I'll still work at Six Apart, still on TypePad, but not remotely anymore. I had the chance to fly to San Francisco a number of times before. All stays cumulated, I think I already spent six months in the city, I'm not landing to an unknown territory, but still, I think it'll be a great adventure. I can't wait to be on the plane because "closing" my Parisian life is a lot of paperwork and is not very exciting. In the real world, you can't zip all... Continue »

I always come back with funny-if-not-painful stories after a visit with the parents. This year I got a little bit of my sister into the mix. My sister comes from the "old generation". Her style of dealing with mom is... Continue »

"Your daddy fucked your mamma and then fucked your sister, then climbed in your bed playin' with your sugar. Go 'head, take your belt off and hang yourself." - 50 Cent, So Disrespectful I mean... there is simply NOT a sentence out there that is more cold and heartless. But let's try... 1) Hey I'll eat your eyes and mouth while I think about how stupid you are. 2) I'm gonna go to your dad's funeral and fart real loud in your mom's face. 3) Your girl is like a piece of shit that I forget to flush down the... I was cleaning my bathroom this morning when I noticed some new wording on the toilet bowl cleaner packaging. It now says it "Kills flu virus." I found this curious since I'm sure bleach kills a lot of things and this particular cleaner has probably been killing them for years now. Of course, the goal is to increase sales through general fear of bird/swine flu. Pointing it out helps the you tap into that fear. I always find this practice a bit irritating because it assumes that you, the consumer, are an idiot and can be scared/cajoled into buying anything.... Continue »

Yes please! I just ordered myself a pair. "Please also note that the USB ports only draw power when something is physically connected to the port. We didn't want a vampire port that continually sucks and wastes power when not in use so this was one of the features on the top of our priority list during the design phase." I wish they were a standard Decora plate, but no matter. Get your own here! Thanks to Geek Brief #667 for pointing out this awesome .. gadget? P.S. I orient my screw heads horizontally for a cleaner look, but that's... Continue »

My old macbook at work just died and now I'm with the new MacBook Pro 13" with Snow Leopard on it. I just used TimeMachine backup and the Migration Assistant, and it worked pretty nice (amazingly): here're some migration list. Switch perl local::lib to rebuild with perl5.10 binaries. (DONE) To do that, i need to install the developer tools. (DONE) SIMBL - upgraded to the Snow Leopard compatible version (DONE) TerminalCopyOnSelect - seems incompatible with 10.6.2 1password - Upgraded to the 1password 3 beta (DONE) Macbook Pro multitouch touchpad: Hard to get used to it but should use a thumb (not forefinger) to click it, or always use tap-to-click :/ Rebuild Remedie and Github Growler to run on perl 5.10:...
