Sharapova analyzes Jankovic's game. Wait, WHAT?
Granted, it's not as awesome as it should have been. But just the idea of it is amazing. Just the fact that she's talking about herself and taking attention away from JJ is hilarious in and of itself. Also? Coco overhead at 4:25 above. Anyway, "Tell me about playing Jankovic: begins at 6:35 above and continues below. Continue reading

Compare and contrast: How to deal with ballkids
Bernard Tomic: I mean, this is just such a Bernie way to do things. Andy Murray: He calls him "buddy"! That being said, did no one explain to these poor kids that there is a functional purpose to holding up the umbrella? You're no Mary Poppins. You're not just accessorizing out there. Continue reading

That's an interesting point I hadn't thought about before, the fact that the written word can be revisited over and over again as opposed to the spoken word. You're right, that could definitely explain why it has so much more impact sometimes.
It happens. And it shouldn't.
In light of the discussion this week about cyberbullying and Twitter abuse, which resulted in Rebecca Marino and Laura Robson deleting their Twitter accounts (Laura has since reinstated it) I figured I'd post this email exchange I had with Slate's Emily Bazelon a few years ago. Bazelon was ...
The funny thing is that nowadays with Twitter (this whole incident was pre-Twitter) it doesn't take much time at all.
Thanks for the note.

Aw, thanks G. I struggle with the sarcasm issue online (particularly Twitter) every day. It's not easy and I'm sure I've crossed the line into hurtful more than I'd like. But I employ the exact same test as you. Before I tweet I always think, "Would I say this to the person's face?"
That's a really good test and I was blown away early on how many tweets I'd trash because my answer was "no".
It happens. And it shouldn't.

The entitlement definitely threw me off too. I understand that mentality for ad-driven sites where yes, the author needs readers in order to make a living. In that instance there's more give and take. But I was genuinely shocked that a small subset of readers here had no problems hijacking things and when they were told to stop acted as though I was a fascist. That psychology was so new to me at the time.
Thanks for the comment. I think we see this sort of stuff more than we'd like and I just wanted to start a discussion.

I think the physicality has so much more to do with it as opposed to the anonymity. People focus on the latter but anonymity exists in real life too. The difference is a punch to the face doesn't exist online.
Thanks for the nerdery! Always welcome here.

10 Headlines Better Than This One...
VIKA PREVAILS OVER LI NA IN SWEET ‘N SOUR BATTLE Good headline! Very very good headlining. That's just very very clever. I see what you did there. I'll take the three-item combo with extra Orange Chicken and a bottle of Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng, amiright? But I have ten better ones. VIKA WINS, BUT MELBOURNE LOVE LI LONG TIME LI NA FALLS SHORT. BECAUSE SHE'S ASIAN. POTSTICKER? I DON'T EVEN KNOW HER! AZARENKA WINS... Continue reading

2013 Australian Open: Week One Deucies!
Introducing the Deucies, an award given for stuff I remember. Because even though a lot of crap happens in a Slam and you try to keep track of it all, only a few things really stand out. The Deucies are an award to recognize anything that left an impression on me. Consider it the cream rising to the top. Or the Number Twos that rise to the top of the toilet bowl. Whichever is more... FD 2011 Year in Review: February

I mean, everyone's still trying to recover from the sleep deprivation of the Aussie Open, and the tournaments are in the Middle East, where we're forced to watch the best tennis players in the world play in front of near-empty stadiums.
