It's easy to imagine that Gruden will be the next coach of the Redskins, if you assume that Allen would hire only him.
Surely Bruce Allen thinks there is a life after Gruden. He likely wants to prove himself as able without Gruden.
Gruden has recently made a multi-year commitment to ESPN. He did not have to, knowning that there would be significant opportunities opening up in the NFL and college ranks. We do not know if that commitment has an escape clause. It's one thing to get out of being the second or third analyst on average shows, but he's been a key component of Monday Night Football - much more high-profile for both parties.
Frankly, I think that Allen was one of the few GM prospects that would agree to work for such a meddling owner. That might be the backstory on this hire - not Gruden.
