I talk a lot about saving money with food around the home because in our house, we could easily spend more money on food per month than we do almost any other household expense. Food can be very expensive if you let it, but with a little thought and planning you can shave hundreds of dollars a month off of your food bill. One simple way that you can ease up on your food budget is to not be brand-sensitive. When I first started shopping for my family I found the brands of food that I liked and I stuck... Sadly, one of the things that modern couples fight about most is money. Both partners may not be on the same page, or may feel like the household money isn't divided fairly. There may always be an excuse for why special treats such as vacations, date nights, or other things can't be afforded. The easiest way to avoid these problems is to make sure everyone involved in the household budget actually knows the household budget. Make a list of all of your household expenses. And I mean ALL of your expenses, right down to copays on medicine and the little... Continue reading

One of the biggest money-wasters in my household is food, and this is an area that I still am working on. The one thing that I am having the most trouble with is actually eating leftovers. We throw away so much food, and that's just money going into the garbage can. Along the same lines, there is plenty of food that goes bad before we have a chance to eat it. Some things that I need to work on in this area: Buy meat on sale and freeze what you can't eat right away. Don't wait, just do it. Label... Continue reading

I was always told to flip off the light when I left a room. Not only does this save your bulbs, but it also saves electricity. What it takes to light a lightbulb is nothing compared to some of the other energy drains in the average home, however. Kitchen appliances are a major energy waster. So many of us leave our appliances plugged in at all times. Toasters, blenders, bread machines, and a myriad other kitchen necessities do not require power at all times, so unplug them when they are not in use. Your computer wastes a lot of energy... I could, and probably will, write several blogs on couponing. It is not difficult to coupon, but there are a lot of nuances relating to different stores and techniques to help you save money. For now, I will give you a brief introduction into the world of couponing. When people learn that I coupon, the most frequently asked first question is, "Is it really worth it?" Of course it is! I am not a serious couponer, but I still manage to save $30 to $60 per shopping trip from coupons. I go grocery shopping once a week, so that adds... Continue reading
