Any family that is interested in living more naturally should consider growing their own food in a garden. When you buy food from the grocery store or supermarket, it is often impossible to know where the food came from or what types of chemicals and pesticides have been used on them. Growing your own food ensures that you know not only exactly where it came from, but also you know what has been put onto it! Setting up your own garden is not as time consuming or expensive as you might think. I started my first garden with less than... Continue reading

Something that is an everyday staple in my home is berry jam. I started making my own jam a couple years ago, and it is one of my favorite foods to make at home. It’s so simple and quick, and the results are yummy! If you have any berries growing where you live, obviously those would be great to make jam out of (provided they are safe to eat). If not, you can buy them when they are on sale or frozen at the grocery store. All you normally need is the berries, pectin, sugar, water, and canning jars. Some... Continue reading

So many women dye their hair, and the majority use chemicals to do so. These chemicals can cause damage to the hair and scalp, and for some women cause varying degrees of allergic reactions and even toxicity. There is a more natural alternative to dying your hair that I have been using for over a year: using plants. What do I mean by that? There are several plants that when mixed into a paste or diluted in water, can be placed onto the hair and will permanently dye it. I am going to discuss one in particular here: henna. Henna... This will not apply to everyone, but for those with or soon to have babies, cloth diapers are a neat way to live more naturally. When we use disposables in our house we go through about thirty or forty diapers a week for one child. That’s about 1,500 – 2000 diapers a year for each kid! Using cloth diapers can help to dramatically cut down on your household’s landfill contributions and make your wallet happier in the process. There are many different types of cloth diapers. The traditional kind (think diaper pins) are called trifolds, there are also pocket diapers... Continue reading

When we think of cleaning our home nowadays the first things that pop into our head are bottles of chemicals, cleaners and solvents. We look for products that allow us to get our surfaces clean with the least amount of elbow grease possible. We are enticed by bubbles that scrub on their own, allowing you to clean your bathroom with no more effort than wiping off the filmy residue when they dissolve. We bleach out stains and purchase materials that are less likely to appear soiled when they are dirty. I watched a segment on the morning news a couple... Continue reading
