Media Bias
I'm sick to death of rampant bias in the media. Actually, no I'm not. People naturally have political opinions. Their political opinions naturally will bias their coverage of an event. You can no more remove bias from reporting than you... Continue reading

Yeah, I kinda find it inspiring that Vietnamese are so efficient they can sleep anywhere, anytime. Kinda envious of that ability.
Saigon Scene 4
A new species in my "Sleepers" series. The Sleepus Sidus Motorbikus Singlus, or side motorbike sleeper on a single bike, is seen only rarely in his native Saigon habitat.
Yeah I thought about taking more Christmas pics this year. But figured it was more of the same. Check out the collection at http://chrisfharvey.typepad.com/charvey_in_vietnam/christmas/

Air-Tight Compartments
Recently I've had a lot of stuff going on. I've found myself thinking more and more about whether this thing will happen or whether that thing will work out. It's ratcheted up the stress and racheted down peace of mind... Continue reading

What Kind of Man Would Live Where There is No Daring?
Magnificent quote from Charles Lindbergh: "Any coward can sit in his home and criticize a pilot for flying into a mountain in fog. But I would rather, by far, die on a mountainside than in bed. Why should we look... Continue reading

Thanks Ba. Lots of ways to translate the song. I found it impossible to translate in a way that captures my feelings about the meaning of the words and song.
Haunting Song
I was surfing the internet and randomly came across this song. It's hauntingly sad but beautiful. The singer is Khánh Ly, popular in the 1960s and early 1970s in South Vietnam. She collaborated often with the songwriter Trịnh Công Sơn. Trịnh Công Sơn is famous for his melancholy songs of lon...
Thanks DKL. I had fun translating it. And understanding the song and the way Vietnamese language is used helps me to understand the language and culture and history of Vietnamese people better. It's rewarding.

Thanks for the comment, gocnho. Trinh Cong Son is certainly open to a lot of interpretation. It's part of his genius.

Hi Amanda,
"Chien tranh" means "war." "Chien thang" means "victory." Trinh Cong Son could have meant it both ways.

It's at the sport center on the corner of Vo Van Tan and Pasteur in District 3. I went to the climbing wall there. I saw this basketball clinic happen and had to snap a pic.
