The Watford Table Tennis Blog is back! I have been remiss and derelict in my duties and apologise for have let the Watford Table Tennis league down in this respect for the past two year but now we have a young table tennis enthusiast with a desire to pick up the cudgels amongst us! Yep, Jamie Fisher is now the go to man for getting the match... Continue reading

In Div One, Dolphins added to their opening win, with a victory over Eagles, 5-3, a good overall team performance. Hounds also won 5-3, Gazelles the losers. David Oram won three for the victors. In Div Two, Audit ‘A’ added another 4 points to last weeks, Oxhey Hall the ‘victims’ this time. Audit had two juniors in their team for a 7-1 win. Two other matches both ended in draws, Lions vs Merkats, and Jaguars vs Iguanas, all team members winning games. In Div Three, Panthers proved much too strong for Quails who lost 0-8. Sadly in this first report of a new season, I have the sad news of the deaths of two of our long standing members. First there was Derek Robinson who died after a long battle with cancer, he was only sixty. Then in his first match of the season, Graham Roland had a cardiac arrest, and could not be resuscitated, he was five days short of his sixty fifth birthday. The funerals of both took place on the last Friday of September. On a brighter note, it has been nice to see this season, the advance of many junior members... Continue reading

The League Closed Tournament took place last week, finishing with the finals on Sunday 22nd April, at Queens School. The entry for Cadets and Juniors was the highest for a great number of years, and the standard was exciting looking to the future of the League. The final of the Cadets for under fifteens, was between 14 year old Jamie Fisher and 12 year old Anthony Close. ‘Old boy’ Jamie had a comfortable win, in three sets. Jamie also featured in the final of the Juniors, for under eighteens, against 17 years old Farren Seamon, and this time had to... Continue reading

Urban Progress fielding Alan Thomas playing all three singles for the first time this season, supported by Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle were too much for visiting cougars... Jim Constable, James Banfield and Barry Stacey. With just one game going the distance, the set of the night between Roger and James, only 2 other games went to 4, the rest were three straight to the home side. Good friendly match played in good spirits! Continue reading

The Watford League AGM will once again be held at the end of May. Last year we failed to provide sufficient notice to those playing in the league to register any changes or amendments to the smooth running of the league that they would like to be considered, and voted on, at the AGM. All proposals have to be submitted in writing (email is acceptable) to either David Edwards, Stuart Seaholme or myself 30 days prior to the AGM. So to be safe this should be no later than the 3rd week of April. A note or two on your... Continue reading

The date has been set for the Watford Table Tennis Presentation evening Saturday 19th May 2012. The venue is once again West Herts Sports Club, and we would like to surpass the excellent turnout that we witnessed last year. Tickets are going on sale shortly from Geof and Sally bax, please do not leave it to the last minute to reserve your place at this 'must attend gathering of the great and the good'. We do not want a repeat of last years skirmishes at the door as those without tickets tried to illegally gain entry! I look forward to... Continue reading

In Div Two, Audit ‘A’ have started a climb back and have regained top spot if only temporally. After beating Audit ‘B’ 7-1, they are level points with Watling ‘C’ who dropped a point when beating Iguanas 5-3, but Watling have a game in hand. Three points cover the top four teams, with Jaguars fourth, they beat Oxhey Hall 6-2. In Div Three, Meerkats in second place, could only draw with Progress ‘C’ for whom James Weston won three games. Newts in third spot beat Watling ‘D’ 6-2. Lions have a big lead in this division. In Div One, teams... Continue reading

The league program got back on track after the Christmas break and it was a good chance to shed the extra ounces (pounds) put on over that period. In the Premier Div, Progress ‘A’ carried on where they left off, and had a convincing 7-1 victory vs. Bats. Aardvarks did even better beating Cougars 8-0. Progress ‘B’ had a very good result overcoming a strong Abbots Langley team 5-3 In Div One, leaders Eagles continued their good form, with a 6-2 win vs. Gazelles. Chief rivals Post Office had a surprising loss to Watling ’A’, going down 3-5. Lowly Huskies... Continue reading

I have recently been advised that Doug Tomsett passed away on Sunday 20th November. Doug was president of the Watford Table Tennis league and also acted as Chairman and President of the Hertfordshire Table Tennis County Association in later years. Doug was also a very active participant in the success of the Barnet Table Tennis Club. For my part I have extremely fond memories of evening coaching sessions at Kingham Hall (St. John's Road) on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in my junior years where Doug and Malcolm Waller spent countless hours coaching us youngsters how to play our beloved game.... Div One, leaders Eagles suffered their first setback of the season, losig 3-5 to Watling ‘A’, Jonathan Jackson unbeaten for Watling. Danger side Post Office had another fine victory defeating Huskies 7-1, Les Leech was their star. Young Ishan Bairoliya gave another good performance when winning all his games in Falcons 6-2 win vs. Gazelles. In Div Two, leaders Audit ‘A’ had to come from behind to draw with Iguanas, David Oram Iguanas star. Audit ‘B’ also drew, but this was a bit fortunate in that Oxhey Hall only had two players. In Div Three, Lions have taken over the... Continue reading

Urban Progress 'A' continued their march at the top of the table with a 7-1 victory over Abbots Langley on the 16th Nov. The Home team of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas proved too strong for visitors Ken Stonebridge, Mick Lowens and Peter Groves. Ken Stonebridge picked up the only win for Abbots with a convincing win over Alan Thomas. The only 5 setter was Alan Thomas against Peter Groves which had it gone Abbots way would have netted them a point, but as it was alan picked up the 5th set and Urban Progress took all the... Audit ‘A’ of Div Two lost their 100% record when Kangaroos, who have yet to win, visited them and shared the ‘spoils’. Mitchell Hyams of Kangaroos was unbeaten. At least the ‘A’ team did better than the ‘B’, Watling ‘C’ winning 8-0. Andrew Goldstein, Peter Meisel and Simon Blum, the winning team. Oxhey Hall and Iguanas also drew David Oram of Iguanas the star in this match. In Div Three, Lions also lost their 100% when drawing with top team Meerkats who had young Jamie Fisher starring. Newts, a very young team, hang onto second place for another week, after... Continue reading

Saturday 12th November Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle were on County vets duty in St. Neots representing the county 3rd team. Although the organisation left a bit to be desired, the Herts team of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle, David Langham and Faith Frankel took on first Essex 3 in the morning session and then Berkshire 2 in the afternoon. Herts picked up two wins, 6-4 against Essex and 7-3 against Berks... On the back of a max points victory against 3rd placed Fullerians the week before Urban Progress 'A' put an even greater gap between them and their closest rivals in a top of the table Premier clash this week. For the home side, unfortunately Alan Thomas had been called away to Nottingham on business for the day and was unable to get back in time, so Tibi Kadar agreed to play at short notice... Tibi is keen to get a few matches underway so that he can defend his title at the Watford championships later in the year and so... Continue reading

An unusual occurrence happened in the Premier Division this week, when in the match between Aardvarks and Bats, all eight games went to a fifth leg. Unfortunately for Bats seven of those fifth ends were lost, so a victory for Aardvarks 7-1. Another 7-1 win was achieved by Progress ‘A’ vs. Fullerians. Better still was Abbots Langley’s performance vs. Dolphins 8-0 the score. Progress ‘B’ with two players drew with Cougars. In Div One the two top teams met, and Eagles just managed to win 5-3, with six games going to five. Post Office with two games in hand look... Continue reading
