I met my friend Ji-Eun for a little shopping and lunch last week. She is a Korean living here in Japan, and while she may not be as obvious a foreigner as I am by first glance, she gets equally as confused when people speak to her in Japanese. But... Continue reading

This really devastating thing happened: my child stopped taking two naps and now only takes one. The sum total of the time she naps in a day is roughly the same, but we now have an entire morning free for outings and errands and play dates. Which is good, right?... Continue reading

In M's recent Mom Street Style post, our reader Julia discussed the practicality of shopping with her growing bump in mind in the non-maternity sections of her favorite stores, and she looks fantastic. Price is one consideration for Julia (and other readers chimed in to echo Julia's sentiment) when considering... Continue reading

With only a change in one's perspective the most ordinary things take on inexpressible beauty. When we don't know, we don't judge. And when we don't judge we see things in a different light. -Karen Maezen Miller, Hand Wash Cold The language barrier during our time in Japan has been... Continue reading

When S initially asked me to contribute a few posts to ANMJ, I was really surprised. Flattered, but surprised. I appreciated her confidence in me and decided to leave the comfort zone of my own personal blog (where I live under the assumption that I am the only one reading... Continue reading

Before I even thought of getting pregnant, I had many fears associated with becoming a mother. I was afraid of what becoming a mother would do to me. I was afraid of what it would do to my marriage. I was, in general, very uncertain before starting such a quest.... Continue reading

Happy Earth Week! As kids, Earth Day was the day when we were taught the three R's of environmentalism: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. As a mother, I still believe in these basics but I'm actually starting to sweat the mess we are leaving to our children. We should be applying the... Continue reading

Picture deets: Me. My dogs. My baby. Working in a workout. Not stylish (points for a colorful scarf maybe?) but we were working it! Remember when I was so excited to start working out again and shared my ideas for a play list? Sounds good, doesn't it? And S wrote... Continue reading

If you're like me, your medicine cabinet is filled with some long-time favorite cosmetic standbys as well as a rotating crew of new products. I generally base my picks on trusted peer reviews or amazing packaging/marketing (what can I say? I'm a sucker for a pretty label) and I keep... Continue reading

I don’t need to tell you that there are countless books on babies, parenting and motherhood lining the bookshelves of your local Barnes and Noble. You could read non-stop until your child graduates from college and still you would have barely scratched the surface of all the reading material there... Continue reading

We really have so much in common vegeater! I truly feel that sprining for the newborn insert for my Ergo was a really good purchase. I love the my wrap, but when I take more athletic walks I feel like she is more secure and I am more comfortable in the lower back department with the Ergo. I plan to rock all the earring until she realizes her hand is attached to her arm! :) And babywearing TOTALLY burns cals...because if you're sweating, you're working out, right? RIGHT!?

At the end of my pregnancy, when I was barely squeezing into one pair of pants and rotating between two shirts, I had these fantasies of being able to dive back into my pre-pregnancy wardrobe soon after the baby was born. I was clearly delusional, not taking into account lactating... Continue reading

At 7 weeks post-partum, it's time to face facts. Even though I follow ANMJ's tips for camouflaging my post-baby pooch as much as I can, the truth of the matter is that I'm going to have to integrate some exercise into the daily blur of living with a newborn if I want to banish the bulge for good. Now that I have my doctor's blessing, I'm slowly beginning to reacquaint myself with the gym. Motivation is often hard to find between breastfeeding, diaper changing, napping, eating and pretending to keep my house clean, so I've been working on a play list to get the proper juices flowing when I'm on the treadmill. I've been devoted to Yogamazing for a while! So convenient! Let me know how this goes, I don't have the resolve to make this resolution yet and I only have ONE! :)
Looks great Shana! I'm loving plaid, but I don't have those little tiny legs to make those tiny shorts and leggings look good! I'm on the hunt for some pooch friendly jeans today to pair with some plaid!
After my recent articles about slings and carriers and shopping car covers (a series about handmade alternatives to common baby products), we had several messages from readers who have experienced confusion or frustration when shopping on Etsy. I hate to hear that, because Etsy is one of my favorite places to shop, online or otherwise. Hopefully, a few tips can help make Etsy more user-friendly for moms who are seeking handmade or vintage goods! Continue reading

A shopping cart cover was a baby item that I had never even heard of, let alone considered buying, before I was pregnant. I mean, can't the baby just sit in the shopping cart without any kind of buffer? The answers I got when I asked my mom-friends this question... Continue reading

While I was on my epic search for a diaper bag, I ended up with an Etsy product that I LOVE, and my many previous experiences with Etsy sellers keep me coming back for more. Once I read the laundry list of baby items to search for, I knew I would be spending several hours (a day?) scouring Etsy's shops until everything was checked off. The results are a series of posts sharing the fruits of all my VERY hard work with you, with alternatives to popular slings and wraps kicking things off. Continue reading

I know all you 'been there, done that' moms are laughing at this question, but I have to tell you that the answer was only silence and blank stares when, while watching me shop online for the perfect bag, my husband asked me this question. He asked because I was begging for his opinion on bag after bag with many different features and options, and he was probably trying to be practical and helpful by looking for details. But my lack of an answer made me realize that aside from the diapers listed in the title of the bag, I have no idea what the hell goes in a diaper bag. Continue reading

As soon as you announce your pregnancy to your loved ones and the world, hot of on the heels of joyful congratulations comes unsolicited advice. Enough of my friends are now mothers that this onslaught of information was not completely unexpected. I realize that within people's love for us and excitement for the changes coming in our lives comes their natural urge to help in some way. And sharing stories, tips, warnings and encouragement is one way of providing that help before the baby arrives, when there isn't much tangible to do. I am a firm believer in the wisdom than can come with experience, so I have taken many of these offerings to heart. I'm no fool. Continue reading
