I applaud you! I went one week cold turkey in Japan and it was really, really hard! My god, the white bread is EVERYWHERE. And the white rice. And SO many sweets? How are these people living to be like 2,000!?
Further revelations about the food that I like to shove into my face-hole
Okay. Remember the Sometimes Sweet Clean-Eating Challenge?? So I did it. (Kind of). I did a WEEK (six days minus three hours) of sugar free! And it was both more torturous and less awful than I had expected it to be. Here’s what I did. No white sugar. No added sugar at all, in fact. No pot...

She's pretty cute, I bet she is a celebrity no matter where you end up next! :)
I was NOT prepared for all the kawaii going on here though, and since Vesper has blue eyes there are many days where suddenly a bunch of little kids are pointing at her eyes, pointing at their eyes, asking me questions that I can't understand, probably something like 'WTF is wrong with your baby's eyes?'
Enjoy your time left in Japan!
So, Anyway, I Guess Life's Not All Doomy
I’m starting to wonder if living in Japan is bad for my child’s ego. Stella is the only foreign kid for miles around, and in kawaii obsessed Japan, her genki smile, auburn curls, and predilection for waving have garnered this wee girl quite the following. Case in point: our weekly trip to the d...

I've been there! In Germany, in the Netherlands, in Norway...even in, dare I say it, CANADA! And now in Japan. Sorry you're having one of those days!
Just so you know, you win the mothering award on this one. Something similar happened to me recently, but I wasn't polite. V was crawling around in the airport at our gate flying to somewhere I can't remember. And a woman with some kind of accent that I couldn't decipher came and told me how VERY dirty the floor of the airport was (like I don't know) and how I should really really please hurry pick the baby up. I said 'She's fine, don't worry.' And smiled. And she went on, about how very VERY dirty and the germs and the sickness and I said, still smiling 'it's good for her immune system.' And she offered to hold her for me, as though the reason I had my child on the dirty terrible floor si because I'm too lazy to just hold her. So I snapped and said 'If you're the person sitting next to us on the flight, you'll be glad she has used up some energy here. She's fine. DO NOT touch her. And for the record, she's never been sick and I let her touch filth all the time.' She walked away, judging I'm sure.
Hang in there! But seriously, wtf is up with cauliflower prices?! Of all the veggies? And that's a staple in our menu!
Just When You Think I'm Some Sort Of Enlightened Parental Being...
Yesterday was one of those days. Stella and I were heading downtown, walking along the sidewalk when up ahead of us, an elderly woman came off her bike. Five or six people walked by, eyes everted, heads down, as she struggled to free herself from the pile of bike and shopping, get dusted off, an...

We really have so much in common vegeater!
I truly feel that sprining for the newborn insert for my Ergo was a really good purchase. I love the my wrap, but when I take more athletic walks I feel like she is more secure and I am more comfortable in the lower back department with the Ergo.
I plan to rock all the earring until she realizes her hand is attached to her arm! :)
And babywearing TOTALLY burns cals...because if you're sweating, you're working out, right? RIGHT!?
Lane's Baby-Wearing Basics
At the end of my pregnancy, when I was barely squeezing into one pair of pants and rotating between two shirts, I had these fantasies of being able to dive back into my pre-pregnancy wardrobe soon after the baby was born. I was clearly delusional, not taking into account lactating breasts, m...

Post-Partum Playlist
At 7 weeks post-partum, it's time to face facts. Even though I follow ANMJ's tips for camouflaging my post-baby pooch as much as I can, the truth of the matter is that I'm going to have to integrate some exercise into the daily blur of living with a newborn if I want to banish the bulge for good.
Now that I have my doctor's blessing, I'm slowly beginning to reacquaint myself with the gym. Motivation is often hard to find between breastfeeding, diaper changing, napping, eating and pretending to keep my house clean, so I've been working on a play list to get the proper juices flowing when I'm on the treadmill. At Home Work-Out Options For Moms Whose Kids Barely Nap
Have you heard of the Denver Hot Mamas? They are serious about getting mamas into shape. Here's an excerpt from their website: Do you want a rock solid core? A tush from which you can bounce a quarter? Longer, leaner, lithe muscles? Better posture? A better sex life? Hello, yes. Yes I do. I'...
Looks great Shana! I'm loving plaid, but I don't have those little tiny legs to make those tiny shorts and leggings look good! I'm on the hunt for some pooch friendly jeans today to pair with some plaid!
How To Wear Plaid Part Two - Look For Girly Details, Add a Jacket (Postpartum and Nursing Friendly)
We went to the Art Museum on Sunday for the King Tut exhibit. There were some seriously amazing statement necklaces. (Among all of the other rich history, of course.) R did pretty well. In the future, I'm getting him his own audio tour. He took over control of it (calling it a "phone"), ...

Thoughts From a New Mom: Don't Ruin This For Me
As soon as you announce your pregnancy to your loved ones and the world, hot of on the heels of joyful congratulations comes unsolicited advice. Enough of my friends are now mothers that this onslaught of information was not completely unexpected. I realize that within people's love for us and excitement for the changes coming in our lives comes their natural urge to help in some way. And sharing stories, tips, warnings and encouragement is one way of providing that help before the baby arrives, when there isn't much tangible to do. I am a firm believer in the wisdom than can come with experience, so I have taken many of these offerings to heart. I'm no fool. Continue reading
