That's excellent advice, I'm definitely keeping this in mind. I have a terrible habit of judging the material too. It doesn't help that my wife is a screenwriter, and by default my audition coach. I've had to tell her to completely reserve judgement for after I'm done shooting the thing :)

Very good point, thank you. I got the ball rolling, so I figured I'd be the moderator, make sure everyone gets up, we don't stray too long, etc.

That book sounds really interesting, thanks for pointing it out! And along those lines, let me recommend The War of Art, if you haven't read it.

Today I auditioned with a side that required me to dig around in my pants. When the director asked if I had any questions, I said "To avoid any impropriety, do you want me to mime the hand in the... Continue reading

This week in entertainment news is typically reserved for dozens and dozens of articles about how long the Oscar broadcast was, and how the host could have been better, and oh my god what was that Best Actress nominee thinking... Continue reading

In short: treading water in a sea of negativity. It's known to happen from time to time among actors and other creative types. In...long: It's been a slow year, though things have been more interesting for the last week or... Continue reading
The merger won't actually be complete until all the members of both unions have voted, the deadline of which is March 30th. So folks probably have longer than two weeks to join AFTRA, if they're so inclined. But if someone out there is thinking about this, be darn sure you're ready to compete at the union level. You certainly won't be able to do any non-union work any more, so if you don't have much of a resume or much training, you'll really be shooting yourself in the foot by joining AFTRA right now.

"Also, when breakdowns have something SO vague like- Female 20's-40's which I've seen multiple times it makes me think they have no idea what they're looking for..." YES! Thank you! I forgot to link to Backstage's own "Mock the Breakdowns" thread on their message board: http://bbs.backstage.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9131061/m/979106622. I found this gem: [ LEAD CHARACTER ] mid 20s, female, but open to other suggestions

Countless pages, both print and digital, have been dedicated to advice for actors on their auditions. I'd like to take a moment to reverse roles here and give some pointers to those holding auditions. I've been in a few rooms... Continue reading
Thanks Wil, well-put as always. I jumped in on my blog at Backstage.com: http://unscripted.backstage.com/2012/01/silly-sopa.html. It really bums me out that our unions are backing this. This does not help artists. It helps businesses.

An alternate title was "SOPA on a Rope-a," but that doesn't make any sense. You'll probably be hearing a lot about SOPA today, due to the various websites blacking themselves out to raise attention on the issue. I'd love to... Continue reading

I decided to take some sort of positive action to counter the absolute quagmire I got stuck in after my last post. It may not get me anywhere, but at least it's something practical I can focus on. I'm going... Continue reading

I'm an avid runner, and my wife got me what is essentially the Bible of training for Christmas: Daniels' Running Formula, by Jack Daniels (yeah, I know—so does he). I've just started breaking into it, and much of it will... Continue reading

If you're ever looking to destroy your free time, I recommend Reddit, the "front page of the internet." They have categories, or subreddits, for pretty much anything, including acting. That's where I found a link to the video below. In... Continue reading
Hey Toronto, thanks for commenting! Yeah, the assistant did sound truly sympathetic, so hopefully it wasn't a turn-off. I go through constant cycles of trying to be available, going broke, working, missing auditions, making myself available again, rinse, repeat. Luckily my day job is fairly flexible and my boss understands what I really want to do so missed auditions are rare, as they should be. Here's to ringing phones!

I wish I'd had a flurry of activity this last week or two to fill you in on, but I didn't. I did have an audition, with another one coming up soon. I did work two long, good, bill-paying days... Continue reading
Thanks guys! C, Harrison Ford did come up in my search, and that's encouraging too. I know he had more or less returned to carpentry when he got his break. Tony, I now cannot unsee that picture as the space shuttle. Good call.

I've been thinking lately about the goals we set up for ourselves as actors, and how often they shift. I started acting in college. Many of my peers had been going since high school, if not longer. I felt late... Continue reading

Today, I am thankful for the freedom we performers and artists in America experience. This is all a matter of perspective, of course. Things could be better here. Things can always be better. That's why we do what we do.... Continue reading

Hi Jacques! I certainly do. I have very fond memories of shouting in your face so downtown Knoxville could hear me. Good times.
