Michelle: Okay, so I know you are writing this blog mostly for fun and to get some things off your chest, but since you asked, I wanted to encourage you with some deep thoughts from Corbin that I've gleened over the years from men much wiser than me. First of all, I'm not denying your struggle, but there is no "chubby" you. The chubby girl you are describing is inherently selfish and self absorbed. She's dead. She died on a cross 2000 years ago. That's not just a nice sentiment... that's the TRUTH. That is the reality of heaven, and I don't mean just for the sweet by and by. You are a NEW creation, the OLD has passed away. Period. The longer we perpetuate the lie that she's alive, the longer that old, dead selfish nature will have dominion over the Spirit that lives in you... who is alive and well. Arthur Burk says most people's soul is like a gargantuan sumo wrestler that we nurture and feed constantly leaving our spirit (wo)man weak, anemic, and under nourished. It should be the other way around! You're soul isn't evil, but it was just never made to be your master. We were meant to live out of our spirit. Unfortunately, we're never really taught that in church, so we continue on as believers buying into the lie that we're trapped in some Romans 7 struggle for life, which, by the way, is a terrible misinterpretation of that scripture. Read it in the context of chapters 6 and 8. Paul is clearly saying we are trapped in a struggle with the old self UNDER THE LAW. We are no longer under the law, but in Christ. Evangelicalism, in general, teaches a soulish Christianity. Just try harder, go to "church" more, don't do this, don't do that, read your Bible, and you might stand a chance at surviving sin and you might escape this life virtually unscathed if you don't mess up too badly. For ones who espouse to know scripture so well, they sure are full of crap and completely ignorant of this truth. Having a relationship with Jesus is a spiritual journey and can only be experienced - and understood - spiritually. Jesus died for our sin, once for all - TRUTH. You are free from sin - TRUTH. All your sin has been forgiven - TRUTH. You we crucified with Christ, and now He lives in you - TRUTH. (Is Jesus a sinner? No. Then neither are you!) You are a new creation - TRUTH. You are clothed in robes of righteousness - TRUTH. You are made alive together with Christ - TRUTH. You are a citizen of heaven - TRUTH. You are seated in heavenly places with Christ - TRUTH. I could go on and on and on. The problem is we try to interpret spiritual truth with our soul and through our natural mind. It doesn't work. First of all, heaven is eternal... there is no "time." So what is present is past, present is future, future is past, etcetera, etc... and the truth is unchanging. What always has been, always will be. (Sound like something from "Lord of the Rings"... but it's true.) We need to learn to pull down heaven's eternal reality into our present circumstance and live from that reality. When we steep ourselves in truth, we feed our spirit and we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. Knowing truth isn't just knowing the scriptures, however. It's knowing the one who is truth, Jesus, the only "Word of God", the lover of you soul, and fighting, as Paul exhorted Timothy, with the prophecies spoken over you. That's how God sees you, Michelle Patterson, from eternity. You are the skinny girl - confident, disciplined, motivated, purposeful, healthy, and smart. You make good choices because you are free to do so. The enemy wants us to focus on our failures and weakness. In doing so, we become powerless to live in the freedom we've been given. We live below our potential, and trapped in the cycle of sin, selfishness, soulishness, undiscipline, whatever you want to call it... it's not who you were made to be. So, it's time to have a party. You are not powerless. You are not a victim. You are in control of your life (under the lordship of Christ). As Hebrews says, it's time to throw off the things that so easily entangle us. Go empty the fridge of all the junk, get rid of the stuff that keeps you up late at night, turn off the TV, the computer, or phone that eats up all your time, lay down "the law" with the kids and let 'em know how it's gonna be from now on, and most of all get with Jesus. Get a sitter, get away for the day, and spend some time to commune with him and listen. Dig out those prophetic words and make a list of all the things he has and is saying about who you are. And let him love on you till you are tickled pink, cause he's tickled pink by you. Look, this may sound like a bunch of positive self-talk nonsense, but its not. This is about being truly grounded in what God says about you and his foundation of truth. Everything you've ever needed or wanted from God is already yours in Christ. Freedom... you've got it. Peace... you've got it. Joy... you've got it. Discipline... you've got it. It was all part of the package - your inheritance in Christ. Ask and it will be given, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you. It's just a matter of us appropriating the truth to our present circumstances. Hope this helps. Lots to chew on. Lots of questions, I'm sure, but this should get you started... you skinny girl, you.
