Vegas has zero tolerance for cheats and I suppose it has to be that way. This seems excessive to me, too.
Talk About Crapping Out
I've never been a Vegas kind of guy, but even as ignorant as I am about the place I figured it would never be a good idea to go there and try to cheat the casinos. I guess I didn't know the half of it: Denver Broncos safety Quinton Carter is facing felony charges in Nevada alleging that he cheat...
If you define the issue, someone will win. That's fine and well but no one wants to lose. Most issues in our divided citizenry are no longer about what's best or a reasonable compromise, they're about winning and losing. We have to defend every piece of grass on our turf, even the ones we don't really care about. It's a bit insane.
Focus, Part 2(updated)
Last Friday I wrote about violence in America and how we hurt the effort to deal with it by defining it as prevalent throughout the land instead of as the mostly localized problem that it is. Today's subject is the related, but distinct issue of public mass killings in the United States. While g...
I think I prefer the elimination style. Enhances the luck factor. When we start including knowledge and skill, I don't have a chance. :)
NFL/FFL Playoffs
I'm doing three different fantasy playoff leagues this year. One is with the regular season fantasy football league I'm in. One is an old friend's league that I've played in the last few years. And one is an ESPN group that Rob started this year that is just for fun, for now. Each league has dif...
I like Andy, too, but if there was ever a coach who needed to take a year off, it's him. I don't understand his insistence on jumping into another frying pan so fast. The cupboard is not entirely bare in KC if they can find a QB and there may be a Luck/Griffin/Wilson out there that they can use that top pick on. Maybe that made KC attractive to Reid.
On the flip side, though, what on Earth made Reid attractive to KC?
Romeo is not head coach material. I think that's pretty obvious now although I thought bumping him up last year was the right move.
Lastly, Kate is the only Eagles fan I care about, too. :)
What's The Matter With Kansas(City Chiefs)?
This news surprised me: Andy Reid arrived in Kansas City on Friday, and the Chiefs are close to making an official announcement that he will become their next coach. Reid and the Chiefs have reportedly agreed to a deal giving the longtime Eagles coach broad authority over football decisions. His...
Happy Belated New Year, Dave. :)
Happy New Year
Here's to a safe and fun New Year's Eve and a joyful and prosperous 2013. It's going to be a quiet New Year's Eve for me. My next door neighbor who was always good for a little celebration is gone now and the house empty. I'll walk down to another friend's house for a little bit, but most likely...

Saturday Stuff - Last 2012 Issue
Will be deciding this afternoon on a location for a CrabAppleLane New Year's Eve Bonfire. We have some old wooden pallets and tomato garden stakes under our back deck that are like"peanut butter and jelly" to termites according to our inspector.

I finally saw it over the weekend. Lost in all of the well-deserved accolades for the director, the actors, and the location filming is a phenomenal, well-told story. This is great stuff.
Winter's Bone: Raw & Compelling
I rented Debra Granik's film, Winter's Bone, last night. Holy low-budget-indie-phenom Batman! I liked everything about the film, but what stuck out most to me (naturally) was the actors. The film was shot in Missouri in winter using mostly local Missouri actors. The gritty landscapes of the fi...

Pop
That's me and my dad and namesake, Stephen Daniel Brekke, back in 1955, when I was about a year or so old and he was 33 or 34. He was not a bad-looking guy, and he could rock a bow tie, as the young people say today. When my parents had this picture developed, they saw something they hadn't no...

Luminaria 2011: The Lights
A shot across the street from our place, looking north on Holly toward and beyond Buena Avenue. A capsule summary: the lights seemed to stretch farther than ever tonight, and neighbors to the east of us shut down a block and had a communal dinner in the middle of the street. Lots of people wer...
Looks like she followed the coast. Smart bird. GEAUX Island Girl.
A Falcon's Journey
Thanks to Marie, who posted the link: The online diversion of the day is the Falcon Research Group, an independent raptor study center in Washington state. The group has satellite-tagged and tracked peregrine falcons that migrate over very long distances. Right now, they're watching a falcon t...
I just cannot imagine burying 6000 bodies, mostly by hand.
Texting Antietam
'A Lone Grave, on Battle-Field of Antietam.' (Photographer: Alexander Gardner. National Park Service: Historic Photos of Antietam battlefield. Click for larger image.) Texts with my brother John this morning: John: Anniversary of Antietam ... just FYI. Me: John, you're just about the only per...
There's a place in New Orleans I could stand and get almost the exact same shot but with a different kind of bridge in the background. The street angles are exactly the same. I miss urban landscapes. Don't live or work in one any more.
Sounds like a fun trip. I'd like to visit NY some day and have great hosts like you have.
Road Blog: Home to Brooklyn
We flew out to New York from the Bay Area on Sunday. It may be the last 6 a.m. flight I ever take, because I have so poorly mastered the logistics of an early morning departure that I wind up getting almost no sleep the night before I leave. In the current instance, I wasted much of the eve o...
Courtesy is hard to come by these days. Consideration might be even harder to come by. A lot of neighborhoods don't have sidewalks because they don't want bicycle OR foot traffic. I think they all drive to the gym. :)
Road Blog: Chicago Sidewalk Bikes
I note a change in the local street culture while strolling in my sister's Chicago neighborhood (West Rogers Park, which for auslanders means "far North Side"): lots more people riding bikes on the sidewalk around here. Impressions are undependable as data points, but I'd say that I might enco...
A guerrilla gorilla?
Berkeley Vehicle of the Day
Outside the Bread Workshop (University Avenue and Acton Street). It wasn't clear to me what "Guerrilla Grub" was, but I was impressed that whoever went to the trouble of painting the truck spelled "guerrilla" correctly. (There's a Guerilla Cafe on Shattuck Avenue, in the old Smokey Joe's spac...
Why does "Guerrilla Grub" use a picture of a "gorilla"? :)

I think Edwards is the only elected Governor to serve time. Our real specialty is corrupt insurance commissioners. I think we had a run of 3 or 4 in a row that hit the big house.
Your Illinois Governors: Felony Update (2011)
Update 12/7/2011: The judge has spoken: Blagojevich gets 14 years n prison. With the news that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has been convicted on 17 of 20 counts of corruption, it's time to freshen my list of recent Illinois governors whose legal trouble reached felony level. As I said back...
We here in Louisiana had two gubernatorial candidates from the same election in prison at the same time. Edwin Edwards defeated David Duke in the 1991 runoff for Governor. They were both in prison in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Duke served 15 months. Edwards served almost 10 years. Not a particularly proud moment for Louisiana politics.

Ditto what Pete said.
Family History
I think it's pretty common among families to think and talk about the unseen influences on our lives. I"m talking about the little shreds of detail, or sometimes rich, complex stories, about our parents and maybe their parents that we think might explain something about them and about us. Concre...
Maybe they're afraid ... well, I can think of a few gravesites I may be tempted to relieve myself on. :)
Restrooms & Cemeteries
First morning of our recent road trip: We stopped in Roslyn, Washington, on the east side of Snoqualmie Pass and a few miles off Interstate 90. Reason: The town was re-created as "Cicely, Alaska" for the series "Northern Exposure" back in the early and mid-'90s. The main street in town, Penn...
I worked with an Adolph Fischer for almost 20 years. Also, the area of Bush I live in was formerly called Waldheim. Still Waldheim to the older locals. Pretty cool, Dan. Fischer with a C, according to him, made him of German descent. Fisher, according to him, was Jewish. The lengths people will go are amazing, aren't they?
From the Road: More Undead History
A few more pictures from the hundreds I almost compulsively shot over the past week. After I go back to work this afternoon, the pictures will turn into a long-term photo editing project that I'll never quite get to. The shot above is from the Haymarket martyrs' memorial in Forest Home Cemeter...
Love the sculpture ad I don't think I've ever seen headstones that clean and unweathered.
Road Blog: Butte to Spearfish
The charm and allure of travel: visiting new places, seeing new things, meeting new people, and perhaps choosing not to eat at a chain or "American cuisine restaurant when you're in unfamiliar territory (that assumes of course that you're motel stop for the night is within hailing distance of ...
