Nearly three years into President Obama’s first term in office, Michelle Obama finally said something with which I can agree. At a recent fundraiser for President Obama’s re-election campaign in Providence, Rhode Island, the first lady told her audience: “We stand at a fundamental crossroads for our country. You’re here because you know that in just 13 months, we’re going to make a choice that will impact our lives for decades to come… let’s not forget what it meant when my husband appointed those two brilliant Supreme Court justices… let’s not forget the impact that their decisions will have on our lives for decades to come.” This was music to the ears of the small, affluent crowd of admirers who cheered and applauded. But to gun owners, Michelle Obama’s remarks should sound like a warning bell, alerting us to the danger ahead should Barack Obama win re-election and get the... Continue reading

Heading the week after a successful mission by the Special Operations Team known as the Navy SEALs, the team celebrates with a handmade luxury cigar. The military is known quite well through the premium cigar market as many cigar manufacturers support our troops overseas with product, sponsorship and encouragement. If you open any Cigar Magazine, you will note photos of our troops celebrating with a premium cigar, hoping to relax with a taste of comfort in a sometimes very uncomfortable place. Gurkha Cigars, having a longstanding relationship with the Special Operations segments of our military released a SpecOps limited edition cigar last year, inspired by the Navy SEALs. The box of 20 sticks includes a knife and a challenge coin designed specifically for the military. Instead of a traditional cigar box, the package used is a pelican case, similar to those designed by the military to transport sensitive equipment and... Continue reading

“Whether it comes from the White House, the United Nations or the local council, the political assault on firearms ownership by law-abiding citizens is bigotry against gun owners,” John M. Snyder charged here today. “Facts surrounding the Fast and Furious scandal reveal it as an example of this bigotry,” said Snyder. The White House ultimately bears responsibility for it. Under an ATF program, thousands of guns were sold illegally to straw purchasers, reportedly with the connivance of Justice Department officials. Many of the guns were transferred to drug cartels in Mexico. Criminals used them in heinous crimes in Mexico and the United States, including in the murder of US government agents. The White House and its Justice Department along with allies in Congress and the media will not admit this nefarious activity shows the federal government is unworthy of trust. Rather, they persist with their bigoted claim that law-abiding American... Continue reading

U.S. Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) recently introduced their Respecting States’ Rights [technically states do not have "rights"] and Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would guarantee the rights of gun owners to carry concealed weapons across state lines in accordance with the laws of individual states. The bill balances the constitutional rights protected by the Second Amendment with the rights of each state to enforce its own laws regarding concealed firearms. “I think we’ve succeeded in striking an effective balance here with a bill that expands our right to bear arms but doesn’t institute a heavy-handed federal permitting system,” said Vitter. “Instead, we’re returning power to individuals and to the states by allowing Americans to carry concealed firearms in accordance with local laws. This doesn’t force states to change their laws and it doesn’t force individuals to go through yet another permitting process – the best solution... Continue reading

A short-term detainment by police of two Chicago newsmen over the weekend as they worked a story about a 6-year-old child who was fatally shot is now flaring as film footage of events leading up to their confrontation include a comment by a one cop declaring: "Your First Amendment rights can be terminated if you're creating a scene or whatever…"—WMAQ Chicago What’s this got to do with gun rights and the Second Amendment? How To Hit Quickly, And With Accuracy. Having been in the training business for a while now, there are a few things which might prove helpful to the average or new shooter in regards to practice techniques. The goal in training, of course, is to approximate as closely as possible the realities of conflict without actually killing off the client base during training. Without starting WWIII for the editor, the “shooting past people’s heads” and “run and gun flaming death” stuff is of course exciting, but then again arguably it can often be dangerous—especially if not done correctly by trained people. “Trained” here is subject to interpretation like, “I was in the Army for 10 years.” It’s cool, but it doesn’t mean they can teach anymore than it means if you’ve got a car you can drive. Not to be ugly, but lots of folks have been killed in “fake”... Continue reading

For hundreds of years, the bullet has been a mainstay in combat. A critical component in warfare, the bullet has not significantly changed in design throughout the course of history and various conflicts. Looking specifically at the rifle bullet, some might argue that the last great improvement happened in 1882, when Major Eduard Rubin, director of the Swiss Army Laboratory at Thun, invented the copper-jacketed bullet — an elongated bullet with a lead core in a copper jacket. That last innovation happened nearly 130 years ago. As a member of the military for 37 years and Sergeant Major of the Army for four years, I would argue that a major innovation happened to the rifle bullet much more recently, with the introduction of the Man Marker Round (MMR), the first technology specifically designed, engineered and expertly manufactured for reality-based training. As part of the Army’s Close Combat Mission Capability Kit... Continue reading

America in 2012. For most, the New Year brings hope for a fresh start and resolutions to live a better life. But following a year when the daily news cycle was dominated by financial instability, government coups and the latest disaster footage, one group of people believes this year could be their last. Whether anticipating a natural disaster like an earthquake or massive solar flare, or a manmade catastrophe such as economic collapse or nuclear winter, these men and women stand united in their unshakable certainty that America soon faces tougher times – times when grocery stores are empty, water is in short supply, and electricity is unavailable. National Geographic Channel delves into the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it in the new ten-part series Doomsday Preppers, premiering with back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, February 7, at 9:00 and... We’ve arrived at that place Ben Franklin warned us of when he shared his concern that one day Americans would trade liberty for security. He had a frightful anticipation that a day might come when the citizens of this country would exchange their liberties, risky as they were, for the comfort and security offered by government. And here we are, with food stamp usage at its highest in U.S. history, Obama phones in our pockets, U.S. autoworkers propped up by government bailouts, 99 weeks of Obama money via unemployment checks, three meals a day provided in public schools and the list goes on ad nauseam. As a result of these things, many have been lured into looking to the state as an end-all-be-all for life’s harder moments. Thus, 911 is dialed not just for true emergencies, but also because someone can’t find the movie theater, or because their children aren’t... Continue reading

The video that the late Andrew Breitbart released of Barack Obama during his Harvard days revealed one more link in the president’s early chain of associations with radicals. But I watched a video a couple of weeks ago that I believe is far more incriminating for our president because it shows the present fallout from his radical agenda, including the redistribution of wealth. Obama has been called the “food stamp president” because more federal grocery subsidies have been given out under his presidency than were under most others combined. But far more than that, this president is the sultan of socialist swing with his assault of federal government entitlement expansions (Obamacare), spending, accruing of national debt, interdictions, seizures, regulations, overreaches, unilateral legislation, czars, presidential orders, Chicago-style politics, etc., and he has the uncanny ability to make most people believe he’s doing none of them. The Heritage Foundation has reported that... Continue reading

Having originally come to Washington to defend federalism, I am always delighted to see the division of powers among the states and the federal government have its proper effect: to protect liberty and limited government. As with REAL ID, the E-Verify federal background check system is meeting up with state resistance. The Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire reported yesterday: This afternoon, the House passed HB 1549, which would prohibit the state’s participation in the E-Verify system, with a nearly unanimous voice vote. The House also killed HB 1492, which would require employers to verify an employee’s eligibility to work in the United States using the E-Verify System, with a 226-59 vote. E-Verify is essentially a national identification system that requires employers to verify all job applicants’ citizenship in a national database system before they can employ them. If the state agreed to participate, all citizens would have to be... Continue reading

The spring air in the small, sand-dusted town has a soft haze to it, and clumps of green-gray sagebrush rustle in the breeze. Bluffdale sits in a bowl-shaped valley in the shadow of Utah’s Wasatch Range to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. It’s the heart of Mormon country, where religious pioneers first arrived more than 160 years ago. They came to escape the rest of the world, to understand the mysterious words sent down from their god as revealed on buried golden plates, and to practice what has become known as “the principle,” marriage to multiple wives. Today Bluffdale is home to one of the nation’s largest sects of polygamists, the Apostolic United Brethren, with upwards of 9,000 members. The brethren’s complex includes a chapel, a school, a sports field, and an archive. Membership has doubled since 1978—and the number of plural marriages has tripled—so the... Continue reading

When Attorney General Eric Holder last testified to Congress regarding Fast and Furious, he described it as an operation that was “fundamentally flawed” in its conception and execution. In other words, the goal of stopping the flow of “guns…from the United States to Mexico” was a worthy one, although the tactics used to do so were examples of “poor law enforcement.” Read more at Ammoland.com Continue reading

Under current law, off-duty and former police officers must follow the same rules as concealed carry license holders with respect to where they can carry concealed weapons, and abide restrictions on private property that is posted “no firearms”. 2 companion bills have been authored in the Wisconsin Senate and Assembly that would trump private property owners rights and allow *former* and *off-duty* police to ignore “no firearms” postings on private property. Before we can begin debating whether or not the state should provide “national defense,” we must first ask what exactly the state is “defending.” In part one of this article, I explain why privitizing the state eliminates the need for an organized national defense force in the first place. I’m going to ask you to do something very difficult. I want you to envision a United States without any kind of coercively-funded government. Imagine that all that exists is a land mass with private businesses and residences populating it. Peace and property rights are protected by individual armed citizens or by companies like ADT and Brinks Home Security. Private security guards are the only “police” in this nation. It’s been reported that a car bomb exploded when Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta landed in Afghanistan earlier today, but no one was injured except the man who was driving the car when it burst into flames. In other news, an even bigger bomb was dropped on our Marines when they were ordered to disarm before entering a building in Afghanistan to hear Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta give a speech. That’s right: our Marines, who are in a combat zone, were ordered to stack their M-4 rifles over here and their 9mm handguns over there before listening to Panetta ramble on about this and that (I don’t remember Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld ordering our Marines to be disarmed in his presence, even once). The U.S. constitution, the constitutions of 44 states, common law, and the laws of all states recognize the right to use arms in self-defense. RTC laws respect the right to self-defense by allowing individuals to carry firearms for protection. The Supreme Court, striking down the District of Columbia’s handgun ban in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), ruled that “the inherent right of self-defense has been central to the Second Amendment right,” and that the amendment protects “the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation. This meaning is strongly confirmed by the historical background of the Second Amendment.” In Beard v. U.S. (1895), the court approved the common-law rule that a person “may repel force by force” in self-defense, and that, when attacked, a person “was entitled to stand his ground and meet any attack made upon him with a deadly weapon,” as needed to prevent... In contrast to dire predictions from anti-gun groups, Right-to-Carry laws have been enormously successful. Interstate reciprocity will serve as a fundamental protection of the right to self-defense by providing people with the ability to protect themselves not only in their home states, but anywhere they travel where carry concealed carry is legal. With “Super Tuesday” voting just hours away, I want to make sure you are fully aware of the gun rights records of each Republican candidate for President. As you know, NAGR has mailed every candidate for President an official NAGR Gun Rights Survey. Ron Paul is the only remaining Republican candidate who has returned his survey 100% in favor of gun rights. Over the last few weeks and months, I’ve asked you to call the campaigns of Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich to demand that each candidate return their gun rights survey 100% in favor of the Second Amendment. Believe me, your calls worked. Repesentatives from each of those campaigns called NAGR offices demanding we instruct our members and supporters to stop calling and to send them another copy of the survey.
