Things every person should have
Things every person should have: A nemesis. An evil twin. A secret headquarters. An escape hatch. A partner in crime. A secret identity. What else?
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers to your and your family.
through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
My dog Ferris, who was rescued from a bus stop in Monrovia by my wife Anne almost exactly 8 years ago, had a heart attack and died this morning. It happened very quickly, and I was with her, which is supposed to make me feel better, but at this moment all I can feel is nearly-unbearable sorrow, ...
I voted by absentee ballot, but wanted to wait until today to turn it in at my voting place to get my sticker (it'll look nice next to my Obama button in a scrapbook :D). I ended up turning it in last Saturday when my youngest sister came home from college to do early voting (her ballot got lost in the mail). 30 minutes in the pouring rain wasn't so bad and I still got my sticker. :)
It was exhilarating to feel the excitement of all the voters who were waiting there with us. There was even a little elderly woman who approached the line with a walker. Everyone in front of her wanted to let her go first so she could get out of the rain, but she said, "No, no. I'll wait in line just like everyone else." She said that she had just gotten out of the hospital and wanted to do early voting. All I can think was WOW. Here's someone who gets the importance of an election.
one lever, pulled.
My voting experience was quick and easy. I think I spent more time confirming my ballot was marked correctly than I spent waiting in line. I guess going in the middle of the morning will do that for you. I wasn't expecting it, but the historical significance of the moment totally overwhelmed ...

Get better soon! A comic-reading binge with Anne would be a very nice way to spend Valentine's Day. :)
is there anyone home?
. . . yep. But my doctor says that talking on the phone, sending e-mails, posting in my blog, and spending too any time doing much more than watching TV (I'm still too drugged up to fucos -- I'm not changing the spelling on that because it's so goddamn funny -- on reading this big stack of graph...

Happy Belated Birthday, Nolan! Hope you had an awesome day!
happy birthday, nolan!
Nolan is 16 today. Our plans include goofing off at the beach, followed by an awesome dinner with a few friends, and lots of Guitar Hero later tonight. It's his first birthday without his big brother around, which is probably harder on me than it is on him, but I think we're all going to have a...

My baby sister started college last year and all I was able to think of while moving her into her dorm was that line from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" spoken by Henry Jones, Sr.
"You left just when you were becoming interesting."
As wonderful as cell phones and emails are for bringing everyone closer, do try to send something by post. The R.A.'s at my baby sister's college encouraged parents to send more things by post because it's always nice to get something from home. The school even had a program during final exams that put together study food (coffee, raisins, cookies, etc.) for parents to order and have sent to their kids. All the parents had to do was write in the provided card to wish their student good luck on their exams. It's a cute idea that you might want to do. :)
Also, try to keep Ryan's the room looking about the same as he left it. My older sister said there was nothing more disorienting than feeling like you don't have a place at home during breaks from college.
*Hugs to you and Anne and Nolan* Good luck in college, Ryan!
excuse me, i have something in both of my eyes
In about fifteen minutes, we'll pile into the car and begin the journey to take Ryan to school. I don't plan to be online while we're gone, though I may update the usual mobile places if I'm inspired. About halfway through the day yesterday, I knew it was going to be a tough one. Anne came out o...

Wishing the wonderful Mrs. Wheaton a fantastic (belated) birthday!
happy birthday, mrs. wheaton!
I worked on Ben Ten this morning, came home, changed into shorts, and spent the rest of the day at the beach with my family, to celebrate Anne's birthday. Now I get to gather up my books, pictures, Sharpies and other convention items, pack my clothes, and get ready to head out to Vegas at the cr...

Happy Birthday Ryan! Your parents are so cool to take you to Disneyland for your birthday!
perfect day
Ryan turned eighteen today, and we spent the day at Disneyland with him. There are some photos in my buzznet blog, taken before the battery on my Motorola POS-4000 went from three bars to zero bars in fifteen minutes. (It's really time for a new phone). Happy birthday, Ryan. You're awesome a...

Happy Birthday, Wil!
happy birthday to me!
I have been absolutely overwhelmed with totally awesome birthday wishes from just about everyone I know, and just as many people who I don't know. Thank you! This trip around the Sun, my 35th 36th*, has started out better than I could have ever dreamed, and it keeps getting better. Now I'm goi...

Congratulations to Ryan on graduating! And congratulations to Wil and Anne for raising an adult successfully!
Ryan, if you're interested, check with your high school's offices to see if and when you can pick up your permanent record. My high school's policy was to hold the permanent record for five years after the student's graduation before shredding them. Pick up day was on graduation day of the fifth year. The records has all the comments that teachers wrote since kindergarten, school pictures, and some proficiency tests. It's also got inoculation records (good to have a copy around). It was fun flipping through mine. My boyfriend found out that he was almost held back in the kindergarten and my best friend knew if his parents saw the file he'd get in trouble (even at the age of 23 at the time!).
Anyways, many congratulations to your family! :D
i am so very proud of him
Ryan was just a tiny little towhead when I met his mom. Though he doesn't carry any of my DNA, over the last eleven years, he's become my son in all the ways that matter. He graduated from high school yesterday afternoon. My wife and I spent all of our free time this week preparing our house ...

Wil, awesome story! Everything you've ever written about your kids is the closest thing to "the cool way to raise kids" guide I'll ever find!
exactly what i wanted
After dinner last night, I was hit with a craving for some sort of frozen fruit, like a nice sorbet or something, so I told Anne that I was going to run to the store and get some. "I have a coupon for Cold Stone," she said, "why don't you take the kids and go there?" The nearest Cold Stone is in...

I would be lucky if my future kids joked around with my future husband like that.
you can count on me
Ryan and I sat in the car and waited for a break in traffic to make a left. "Do you have any plans for the weekend?" I said. "Yeah," he said, "I'm going to go see three hundred and twenty-three movies." I looked at him. "How are you going to see that many movies in one weekend?" A Wheaton mo...

Just yesterday I read an article in the university newspaper that they opened up a free meditation center on campus. Wil, I'm going to take your post as a sign for me to pay that center a visit soon. Thank you. :)
paper boats
I've found that I must have something that's just for me, that just makes me happy, that I do specifically to take care of myself, before I can spend any time or energy on doing things for other people. Can you two *be* any more perfect for each other? :)
fun with dirty words
I carried a huge box of firewood through the store, resting it upon my shoulder so it would't give me a hernia. When I got to the checkout, when Anne was waiting for me, she giggled. "What?" I said. "You've got wood." "Nice." I said. We got all of our items scanned, and as I was typing in my PIN ...
