A year in review from a rookie working with data-driven advertising. As an account services employee spending the majority of my time analyzing data for a dot-com client, my days are spent drawing conclusions on campaigns using available data from multiple sources. From my time pulling unorganized raw data, writing query strings, and interpreting piles of information, I’ve learned the following lessons over the last year related to data and how it impacts advertising. Making Raw Data Pretty There are many times when you’re in a situation where you need to make sense of a pile of numbers and you... Continue reading

For Christmas I received a Fitbit bracelet. Don’t know what it is? That’s ok, a few months ago I didn’t either. It’s rubber bracelet with a chip in it that works with an app on your Smartphone to track your calories, steps, activity time and sleep. Once I found out what it was and how useful it could be, I wanted one. I unintentionally went through all of the stages of the Consumer Behavior Funnel. The Consumer Behavior Funnel is a demonstration of a consumer’s behaviors and actions leading up to a purchase. My experience with the funnel went a... Continue reading

As the year winds down it is tradition for the radio and television news and entertainment programs reflect back on the current year, calling out some of its highlights and lowlights. From the most memorable news stories, to the stories we wish we could forget, and of course those who passed on in the previous year. So as a media person, it seems only fitting that I too call out a few media highlights and things I’d like to forget. The July migration of Google Adwords campaigns from Legacy to Enhanced. We lost the ability to segment by device as... Continue reading

There is always a certain buzz around the New Year. We set new goals, both personal and professional. We try to stick to these goals the best we can to make ourselves the people we want to be. With the New Year I have been given a very big challenge: I was promoted to Senior Media Coordinator at Cuneo advertising. This promotion includes understanding all our clients’ nuances, training in new employees (I’ve already enjoyed training in our newest, Kyle Conway), and having more of a leadership role in our department. I am grateful my superiors have honored my hard... Continue reading

Ever wonder how people come up with ridiculously creative ideas? Do they sit and brainstorm for hours on end? Do they stay at work for 24 hours straight until they’ve beaten every idea possible out of their head? Sure, maybe some people do it this way—and maybe it works for them. But for the majority of us, this is definitely not the way to go. To be honest, there is a much more fun, easier way to go about this. Continue reading

The holiday season is upon us and everywhere you turn there is an advertisement telling you what to buy. I absolutely love this time of year. I love the snow, the decorations, the holiday music and all the fun treats that seem to appear at the office. What I don’t love is battling the shoppers at the mall, grocery store, etc. It makes my anxiety soar. There is just too much going on in the parking lot, in the aisles, in the lines waiting to check out. I feel like I’m not allowed to browse or compare items. There is... Continue reading

Knights of Columbus! The day has finally come! Tomorrow, December 18, 2013, Anchorman 2 will be released. I know there are many that have waited a long time for this and it’s because of one of these two reasons: 1) You’re ecstatic to see Anchorman 2) You’re sick of all the media attention and promoting of Anchorman 2 and soon it will be over. The marketing of Anchorman 2 has been dramatically different than any other movie to date. It seems everywhere you look Ron Burgundy is popping up. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr–name a social media site and he’s there. I’m... Continue reading

Mary Barra. Have you heard of her? If not, read on! Last week, General Motors announced her as their new CEO. Working at an agency whose clients are mostly automobile dealers this is big news. Personally, as a woman, this is even bigger news! I can’t explain how excited and surprised I was to hear that a WOMAN was chosen as CEO at of one of America’s largest companies. Although Barra is not the first woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company, she is now one of 23 women who are the heads of Fortune 500 companies. Why is this... Continue reading

This Thanksgiving my husband and I arrived at my parents’ house to find my Dad pouring over ice fishing maps, notes and other miscellaneous information he’s amassed over the past 30 years. My Father and The Husband proceeded to sit there discussing lakes and strategy like little kids eager for the new season to begin. As I watched them pour over maps, old outdoor newsletters and press releases, I realized going through boxes of paper fishing files like this is likely a thing of the past. When we start preparations for ice fishing season (yes, The Husband puts much time... Continue reading

I am a loud person. I haven’t always been, but the longer I am around you the more you’ll realize how obnoxious I can be. (To my co-workers: I apologize). I feel that I am always singing a jingle or will randomly sing something based on a single word that triggers my memory – be it a movie quote or an advertisement. It’s usually those two things. Working in media for the past 5 years I’ve listened and watched a variety of stations locally and across the nation. You name a city and I’ll randomly spout off TV station call... Continue reading

1.Because with the New Year comes a new approach: This is the time that advertisers can see what was successful and where they need to make changes. This is a very exciting time for agencys to dig deep and provide their clients fresh ideas for the New Year. 2. For Cyber Monday: This means I don’t have to be out in the cold to get the new tablet that I have been keeping my eye on the past month. 3.For the plethora of new media: Being a part of the media team at Cuneo Advertising, I am able to be... It’s true that the world of business communication has evolved- mostly into communicating via email. When I left my former ad agency to stay at home, I had no idea how much technology would grow in 8 years. Upon my return into the workplace, I was struck with the feeling of disconnect between vendors and myself. No one used the telephone anymore. All communication between people, including my managers, was only via email. I asked, “Don’t people call anymore?” The answer was a resounding, “No.” I found it interesting that people thought that they were too busy to pick up... Continue reading

At Cuneo Advertising we pride ourselves on outstanding customer service, but that isn’t always easily definable within the Media Department. Our Account Service staff speaks with clients on a regular basis to ensure their needs are met. Creative Services is always thinking of new and improved ways to display the client’s message and makes any changes the client requests. So what does outstanding client service look like in the Media Department? The Media Coordinators work hard to obtain the necessary paperwork to receive the client’s co-op funds. This is in addition to the standard invoice reconciliation process. It’s an extremely... Continue reading

It’s this time of year that is often described as “the most wonderful time of the year”. I’m not talking about the holiday season though; I’m talking about media annualplanning! It’s our agency’s busiest and most exciting time of year. We are gearing up for 2014 by building ad campaigns that are tailored to meet our clients’ wants and needs. There is a lot of preparation in planning a successful advertising campaign. The account team works with the clients to determine their goals and budgets. The information is then relayed to the media team, where we work together to create... Continue reading

If you are connected to me on social media (and if you are not, check me out at @egcarlson) you know I recently went on vacation. Since we have an on-going “highest Klout score” competition within the Cuneo media department, I made a point to check in as many places as possible. As a result, of one of these check-ins became a fantastic example of social media engagement by a for-profit organization. While waiting for my flight home, I checked in at the Ft. Myers Airport. The next day I received a personal response from the airport. This engagement shows... Continue reading

I love all media, especially digital media. It’s constantly changing and always challenging. But, being a numbers geek, I think I love it most for its accountability. By accountability I mean the ability to know the impact my media selections had on the client’s website; which leads to spreadsheets full of analytics. But, one client challenged me with this statement: “When you place a digital schedule I know how many visits my website saw. I need you to tell me how many clicks I get from my television schedules and my newspaper ads.” My first answer was that the number... Continue reading

Happy Halloween! My blog today is in honor of Halloween. What could be better than costumes, candy and spooktacular festivities? To start your day of haunting off right I’d like to share with you this Crest and Oral B commercial. It all begins with a bunch of kids and vegetable flavored “treats”…pretty terrifying, right? Take a look: There are many reasons I love this advertisement. I love the spontaneity of everything that goes on in this ad. The kid’s reactions are priceless and they are so honest. My guess is that they didn’t expect some of those responses when they... Continue reading

I have a confession to make: I like watching NASCAR. Seriously. Admittedly, I became a closet NASCAR fan because my husband likes watching it. Naturally, when we started dating, I watched it with him. I was surprised when I found myself enjoying watching the races. I never realized the amount of strategy involved in a car race. Plus, there is more drama with who crashed who and who cut who off that it’s like watching an episode of The Real Housewives. Of course, as a marketer I’m always paying attention to how companies are marketing themselves. I was impressed to... Continue reading

When I say hippo you are probably thinking of a big, kind of ugly animal that is big, not so pretty and not very smart. You’ve probably seen them at the zoo, wading in dirty water. I’m not talking about those hippos. My Web Analytics 2.0 instructor at Market Motive defined a hippo as Highest Paid Person’s Opinion. This person bullies the rest of the team into seeing or doing things their way. So how can smart marketers and data analysts protect themselves from the hippo? 1. Data is our friend. Analyze segment and present data and data trends in... Continue reading

In June I was promoted from Media Coordinator to Media Buyer. I experienced a flood of emotions: excitement, pride, nervousness and even a little bit of shock. I’ve worked hard to get where I am today and I’m not stopping here. What I’ve realized is that each step forward is almost a little step back…in my brain at least. Sheryl Sandberg says it best in her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, “Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder.” Isn’t that the truth when you really think about it? You don’t always move up. You... Continue reading

As my dedicated blog readers (my husband and mother) know, I wrote a blog by a similar title a few years ago called “Why Pitching a New Client is Like Going on a First Date” Those same (two) dedicated readers will know that Cuneo is growing, so I’ve been in the process of interviewing potential new hires. During this time, I’ve realized that the interview process is also like going on a first date. First Blush Boy meets girl. Boy thinks “that girl is cute, I wonder if she’ll go out with me?” Girl thinks “hmmmm that guy is cute,... Continue reading

After working for many years at a big advertising agency, I find it refreshing to work at a small ad agency. Some say there are compelling arguments to both sides and I agree. However, this blog is about my top 5 reasons for working at a small agency. 1). My new company, Cuneo has approximately 30 employees. I can honestly say that I know everyone I work with! Often at agencies with 100+ employees, you don’t have the opportunity to get to know everyone. That is due to the “specialist” work style. Working with 30 people feels like home to... Cuneo Advertising is growing, so we are hiring. This is always a good problem to have. I have been conducting interviews for a new Media Coordinator and have been asked multiple times, “What makes a good Media Coordinator.” To answer this question, I don’t have to look far. We have a great team of Media Coordinators working for us. Allow me to brag. They are extremely detail oriented: Whether its entering rates, changing flight dates, reconciling invoices or sending traffic instructions, there are a lot of minute details that require attention to detail. Even the smallest mistake could result in... Continue reading

Fall TV premiers are a favorite part about being in media. I love seeing the new programming and looking into my crystal ball to predict the success or failure of a particular show. I have to admit the show that intrigues me the most right now is The Crazy Ones airing on Thursday 8:00PM central on CBS starring Robin Williams as the owner of an advertising agency. First thing that comes to mind is the last awesome show set in an advertising agency was called Mad Men. And now we have The Crazy Ones. I think I see a pattern... Continue reading

For the Baby Boomer, those born between 1946 and 1964, they thought of television as something you made a personal appointment to watch. There were just three networks and in 1975 and 57% of households had one television. The family planned to watch The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday Nights together. Mom made a big bowl of popcorn as the family gathered around the TV to watch The Wonderful World of Disney. For the Gen Xer, those born between 1965 and 1980, they grew up with a plethora of TV channels to select from including cable channels. In 1995, 71%... Continue reading
