Tom,
Great post. Kudos to you for making a wise investment. The metaphor of the cobbler's children is apt. As marketers, we can be our own worst enemy. We often fail to address our own marketing/branding/positioning, but hesitate to hire outside help because we have the expertise ourselves (generally out of sheer stubbornness).
This resonated strongly with me as I experienced much of the same frustration as a job seeker relegated to generalist status this past year. Although I received some excellent advice from outside counsel (including yourself), I could have benefited greatly from a professional brand assessment.
I think it's probably a valuable exercise for any marketer, regardless of the current state of their career (budget permitting). I imagine it would help to sharpen one's focus and hone in on the areas where they can provide the most value.
I look forward to seeing where this takes you. Thanks for sharing.
Dave

Yes! Excellent post David! You just outlined the exact job searching strategy that I've employed. Reading this was very encouraging. I've used content creation and activity across a variety of social networks to enhance my personal brand. If you're curious, you can see my story at http://HireDaveCutler.com (you'll find that as Paul suggest above, my resume also features QR codes). Thank you for writing this.
