Life as a 40, oops 50-something--- juggling work, life, children and a great husband who is a stay-at-home-work-your-head-off Dad and living with cancer, and all the various challenges and joys of life as we live it....
Interests: in no particular order: americana music, gardening, my family, cooking (not baking), old buildings (I tend to like them best before they're restored even though I'm all for historic preservation), antiques...mostly 19th century american, reading (sometimes respectable stuff and sometimes anything set in regency england), roadside architecture, mid-19th century american glass, old roads, hosting parties and house concerts in our slightly ramshackle house, laughing at my boys, admiring my boys, missing those I've lost, loving those I have.

A moderately frustrating week. Busy, but not bad, at work, but my back went to hell on Wednesday. Thursday I managed to somehow lay flat and still work...creating a little nest for myself on the red couch. Yesterday I worked... Continue reading

Two in a row folks, two in a row. We had defrosted some cod the other day but then wimped out and ordered something, so we had to use this or it was going to go bad. It infuriates me... Continue reading

Given some of the disastrous (I mean, plain old burnt, or just plain bad, or just meh) cooking I have done of late. I am encouraged that I've made a couple of things lately that have been delightful. Sunday I... Continue reading

This is what it looks like when you go for a Friday afternoon drink with your husband, and make him run over to Exile on Main Street in the rain to get the new John Prine album. This what it... Continue reading

Ahhh. I have the day off (except that I have to pick somebody up at the airport for work tonight). I have to do a bit of work...but I'll do it here at home, and I work tomorrow and Saturday,... Continue reading

1. We drove past a church the other day, and on its electronic sign it said, "Visit our Website, Christ is Risen." I laughed for blocks and blocks. I don't think Ernie was quite as amused as I was, but... Continue reading

As I sat at my desk at lunchtime, nibbling on my leftovers from last night, my husband started excitedly texting pictures of plants coming up in the garden. All I could think, as I texted back, "YES, that's the bleeding... Continue reading

Old Architecture building. That stairway brings back so many memories. Art History. Architectural History. Undergrad years. Wandering Champaign. Every year I am amazed at how the peonies look like muscular little fists bursting through the ground. Hellebores hanging on despite... Continue reading

It's kind of grey, and I'm kind of blue. I haven't made a mark on the weekend. I read a good book (the Tama Janowitz) and then read a lot of crap. There's a certain naiveté in me, that I... Continue reading

I just devoured Tama Janowitz' memoir. As soon as I finished it I went online, wanting to see if I could find more about her life since the memoir ended, a few years ago. I was startled to see so... Continue reading

1. Getting a second car when your teenager starts driving is like not getting a second car. Signed, the one car family. 2. Roxy Music has aged really well. My husband is on a kick and damn it sounds better... Continue reading

1. The other day Owen said, "I'm not really a rebellious teenager, I'm just going through the motions." This morning, however, I found that hard to believe. Love starting the day like that when you're already not looking forward to... Continue reading

Well, we did it. We got rid of our cable and just have internet. We’ll save about $80 a month. Woo-hooo. Maybe that will pay a TINY part of our car insurance that just tripled with the addition of a... Continue reading

Good Lord but that was a long week! And now it's Saturday and, although I don't know what it says about my personality, I love days like this. Snow and rain and gray, heavy clouds. I can hear Leo laughing... Continue reading

Somehow, when things are really good, I always feel as though there is golden light. You know how it feels when you're surrounded by glowing leaves in the fall? Or surrounded by sunflowers or black eyed Susans? That kind of... Continue reading

Ok, two of those things are not like the other. Anyway... It was ten years ago, later this year, that we coerced Kane Welch Kaplin to come and play at our house. So it felt like a homecoming of sorts... Continue reading
