Register is a useful concept. It's something that a lot of language learners and teachers would do well to learn about. A lot of people think that formal language is correct and informal language is incorrect. In reality they are both correct but just in different registers. Native speakers, when correcting someone's language, will often feel it's their duty to teach how the language "should" be spoken rather than how it really is spoken. They don't really understand about register.
