Race day started at 3:45am. I mainlined some coffee and was on the road by 4. The early morning pilgrimage is almost routine at this point. Traffic is light and the drive uneventful. A coffee refill at Alley Cats in Spooner usually gets me through. My tire choice had been weighing on me all week. Continue reading

I'm excited heading into 2017 with some big changes in the works. The biggest news is that in my offseason I've gotten certified as a USA Cycling Level 3 coach and will be looking to coach a few athletes this year. I'm really stoked to be able to share what I've learned about training and racing over the years. I've competed at a high level on of a variety of training programs. I've been my own training guinea pig for years. I'm confident I can help you train smarter and accomplish your goals while balancing your off the bike responsibilities.... Continue reading

2016 was a huge transition for me. I started the year cranking out a huge base but that all changed when I accepted a job in Minneapolis in March. Moving a family of 4 and a 4 bedroom house is stressful to say the least. I was lucky enough to link up with Foundry Cycles for the year and race some great bikes. Going into the year one of my main goals was the Royal 162 gravel race in May. With my modified training plan in hand I went solo just a few miles into the 157 mile race and... Continue reading

is blogging becoming a dead art? i dont think so, but with so many social media outlets its pretty difficult to keep up on all fronts. my motivation to craft a thoughtful and entertaining parcel of words, wrapped up neat and tidy, is waning. so naturally, when something much less time consuming but still visually appealing is brought to my attention, i choose it as the future path. aside from a link to a new platform, expect nothing more from this url. my favorite photo from racing in europe. in this closeup, tom robertson captures something that results or race recaps just cant. focus, determination, and good ol fashioned racin. im sure plenty of people were wondering what the point was of going to belgium to finish two laps down. it was more about finding something inside myself than trying to win and you can certainly find a lot when your going balls out and still getting lapped... our final race of the trip was the fidea cyclocross classics tervuren. i did my best attempt at internet recon on youtube. pretty pointless. we arrived to fog, mostly melted snow, and a plethora of soupy mud. after a training lap, i was already confused. the course made great use of the natural terrain. a twisty track that weaved through the trees, up and down the small gully running through the park, all linked together with rutted walking paths. after our viewing of the course we hit the warming van and did our best to recount the parcours in our... happy new year one and all. i learned last night that belgians take their new year's fireworks pretty seriously! i heard a solid 10 minute stream of blast going off after midnight. new years day is also the traditional day for the grote prijs sven nys. a race in sven nys home town on his home training course. we were greeted by thick fog, 3 degrees C, and a bit of drizzle. 2 laps of training on the course and i was covered in mud. gregory and chris would have their work cut out for them today. being part of... yesterday was the smallest race of the trip for us. bredene is right on the coast of the north sea. a quick 60 minute drive and on to inscription. after some back and forth with the gate keeper, he finally let us in after we showed our licenses. i don't think he believed that this guy with a huge beard was a pro cyclist! we tracked down the registration in the dank corner of a cafe/bar. pretty straight forward. we managed about 4 training laps on the course. flat, bumpy, some twisty sections and more road sections than i care... the last couple of days have been interesting for me. after diegem, my achilles really started bugging me. bad enough i couldn't even ride yesterday. remember what i said about listening to the mechanic? i come back early and gregory says "ok, we go to the doctor". a phone call and 30 minutes later i was in the exam room for one of saxo bank's doctors. crazy. so there's not much to do about the leg except try to dull the pain. christmas cross week is no time for rest! he gave me some anti inflamatories and some high strength... racing in belgium you learn a lot. thus far, the two biggest things ive taken are: 1) ride the ruts. if a rut looks like its going to swallow your front wheel up to the hub, its only because that is the best line. be light on the bars and let the rut take you through. not always the easiest as you have to anticipate where to throw your body weight. 2) listen to the mechanic. the courses here are quite different, especially riding in the ice and snow. gregory and chris have the bikes dialed for us each time... today was the start of our final week in belgium. 6 races. nothing like starting it off with a world cup! brian and i along with the crew of gregory, nelle, and chris made it to the zolder track without much of an issue. the temparature seemed fine and not a ton of snow..until a few kilometers from the course. the road turned to ice and seemed like a decent amount of snow. from the first look at the course i knew it was going to be an interesting one. the only thing i can compare it to was nationals... with our midweek race cancelled, the only choice was to get in some hard efforts. with snow, then melting, then freezing, then snow, its been 3 days on the trainers. today was an easy day with the prior two being some hard efforts. yesterday was a sufferfest in the cold garage. there's not much to do now, but we'll have our hands full starting sunday. it'll be race two days, one day off, race two days, one day off, race two days, fly home! last night we met up with the webber's for some home cookin. pete is over for a... my first world cup is done! the course itself was really good. it was icy and snow covered, so pressure was really low. a lot of the corners seemed worse than scheldecross. 58 uci points doesn't get you much at a world cup, so i was sitting about 7th row. my start was decent and i rode into the high 40's i think. a couple of decent laps but then my legs wouldn't work! i pretty much felt like the last day of jingle cross this year. just kinda riding around and not able to go. got pulled with one... First race of the euro campaign is done! brian and i raced the scheldecross c1 in antwerpen today. snowy roads shuts this country down so it took us double the time to get to the race. at the inscription, they didn't have me registered. i thought i registered but maybe my dutch is rusty? that snafu caused me to start 64 out of 65 in the 7th row. we got to the course with 2 hrs to go. gregory set up camp and we went for some laps to test tires and pressure. the course was pretty much one line... quick update from oudenaarde. i made it yesterday morning...with no bags. bummer. they're supposed to show up today. my tracking shows their in brussels this morning. our mechanic gregory babysit us for the day as brian and i learned how to work the gread cutting machine at the grocery store. did an hour ride yesterday on one of brian's bikes. we rode the koppenburg then proceeded to get lost for a bit before finding our way back. it was about 35 degrees and pissing rain. grocery shopping is done. waiting around for last night's snow to melt before we do... now that jingle cross is a week out, the details are a little fuzzy. it was probably my best weekend so far this year. i had two great days on friday and saturday with an 8th then 6th. sunday was mediocre at best. i rode around in a group and had very little power to lay down. just lacked the snap i had on the 2 days prior. this weekend i was off from racing as i will be next weekend as well. no nationals for me. the time and money make it too difficult with my upcoming euro trip.... a 1600 mile round trip drive to nc was rough, but doubling my uci points made it worth it. both days played out very similar. large group riding around for an hour at a manageable pace with a couple of hard burst each lap. the course and wind made it nearly impossible to go off the front. both days had 10+ people in the lead group going into the final lap. both days i managed to crash in the exact same spot. both days i bent my derailleur hanger and didn't pit in fear i'd lose the group. first day... last weekend the mn states race weekend was on tap. ten inches of overnight snow made for an interesting course on saturday. half the field took off running at the whistle. i made my way into the top three. bergman took a flyer on lap one. i eventually bridged, got a decent gap, proceeded to grab a bottle of something-or-other on the stairs then had to recoup a lap as bergman latched on. that was pretty much the rest of the race. i led the last couple of laps and rode it in for the win with a small gap.... i've set up a donation to help with additional funding for my december euro cyclocross campaign. anything will be helpful if you have anything you can spare. still a month and a half before we depart, but the sooner everything is dialed, the cheaper it will least im hoping. if anyone has too many (as if there is such a thing!) frequent flier miles and would like to donate some, please email or comment. its been a while since i did a double local weekend, long overdue. support the local scene and get some more racing in my legs. day one was the annual halloween race at washington park. a strange race it was. b-matter aka wild thing took the early lead until the pit, turns out he was getting some bike swap practice in. i spent a lot of time at the front, never really putting much of a move in as a string of 5 or so hung on. with about 5 to go i hit the run up barriers and noticed...
