You want a beautiful World Cup game? The third-place Germany-Uruguay match was amazing, right down to the last kick of the game. One of the best matches I've ever seen.
CROSSWORD #244
ACROSS LITE PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY] PROGRAM: [Across Lite] PROGRAM: [Java] PRINTOUT PUZZLE: [ THEMELESS MONDAY] PROGRAM: [Adobe Acrobat] Just asking: are we sure those were the two best teams in the World Cup last night? That was one fugly game. Immediately after the match, Liz and I...
It's the lack of effort that kind of surprises me. 15 seconds of googling and the original source is right there; another minute to drop the guy a line via a BGG forum message, and everything's cool. I really doubt the guy would have made a fuss over it; for that matter, maybe he'd heard it from someone else.
I just feel like people need to start being more conscientious about this sort of thing when profit comes into play. It's kind of the point of the "noncommercial" part of the Creative Commons license Wil tends to use. And the "attribution" part, for that matter.
I'm not trying to troll here. I'm a big fan of Wil and think it's awesome how he CC-licenses stuff so we can play with it without worrying. Which is why I'd expected a bit more followthrough on that idea here.
my sword glows blue in the presence of rules lawyers
Around the end of last year, I Twittered: Just read this on Board Game Geek: "My sword glows blue in the presence of rules lawyers." I kind of want that on a T-shirt. I figured that it was very unlikely that I was the first person on all of the internet to combine gaming archetypes with Lord o...
I'm kind of surprised that a guy that makes his living off of words would be this careless with credit where credit is due. It's one thing to pass along an awesome bit of funny that you heard on the Internet; it's something else entirely to try to cash in on it.
Luckily, someone downthread found what appears to be the original source...

my shirt.woot fails its saving throw
I don't know why, but Woot never e-mailed me to tell me that my shirt design was going into the Reckoning, and it slipped to number 22 when I wasn't looking. I was told that I'd get fair warning before it was in danger of being Reckoned, and I'm pretty pissed that that didn't happen. In fact, I...
This brings back fond memories of chatting online with a friend during the 2003 Wings-Ducks series. We spent basically the entire series making ridiculous comparisons between the game (and particularly Giguere's play) and this anime series we'd been watching.
Giguere pretty much single-handedly knocked the Wings out of the playoffs that year, and went on to win the Conn Smythe while playing for the losing team in the finals. It was a hell of a performance, and I say that as a Wings fan.
HOLY CHRISTABLES, @STEPTO! KINGS WIN
The Kings and Stars played a game tonight that could best be described thusly: INT. Hockey Arena. TURCO No goals for you! You come back, ONE YEAR! QUICK NO YOU CAN NOT HAZ GOALZ. NOT YOURS! Seriously, the goalies were insane. So the game goes to overtime in a scoreless tie (which delights my in...
I may not know much about Hollywood, but if I were a casting director I'd hate having people on the Internet attempting to interfere with my decisions.
I imagine there are several more reasons than simple professional courtesy that Wil doesn't tell us what he's auditioning for until well after the part's been cast...
stupid murphy's law can bite me.
My plans to spend last night with the Basic D&D Dungeon Master's Booklet were derailed when I got a late-afternoon phone call from my manager. "You have a pilot audition tomorrow," he said. "I'm sending you all the material right now." He described the show to me; it sounds very cool. He describ...
Cheyenne Wright is the colorist for the awesome webcomic Girl Genius - and plays Othar in the GG radio plays - but I had no idea he could draw like that. That's a hell of a portrait.
various awesome things
My story The Art of War in the latest Star Trek manga got a really nice mention at Trek Movie dot Com: Fans of Wil Wheaton’s blog or books know him to be an adroit writer of nonfiction, an almost Mark Twain for the geek crowd if you don’t mind such a comparison. Yet his "Art of War" story show...

Here are a few kobolds I rolled up:
Boltsmacked Kobold
Kobold Sleepylover
Kobold Heckbrains
Dragoncrotch Kobold
Kobold Dreadlard
Kobold Sheboyganshowers
Kobold Stalkersnack
Spongejuice Kobold
"Sheboyganshowers"? What??
how to create your very own ogre deathcrotch
Yesterday, I told some friends of mine who are writers that I feel this need to write, and I certainly want to write, but my brains aren't cooperating with me at all. I asked them for advice, and was relieved to learn that I'm not the only writer (who doesn't feel like a writer at the moment) wh...

Actually, a coworker of mine figured out how to rickroll people in real life - he downloaded the video on his iPhone, and he tells them to "check this out" and shows it to them.

Emerald City ComiCon, here I come!
I am so excited to announce that I'll be going to Seattle next month for the Emerald City ComiCon! This is an awesome show, with a focus fucos on indie books and publishers. I think I'll feel right at home, if I can keep myself from totally geeking out too much. (Yeah, who am I kidding?) The sch...

Wow! Congrats to him. Yellowstone's an amazing place for photography, so he should get some fantastic shots out of that one.
in which my brother wins a contest and i am proud of him
My brother is a hell of a photographer, and is on the verge of turning his hobby into something much, much more. He took this picture last year, and it instantly became one of my favorites. This morning, he told me that he'd recently entered it in a contest that had hundreds of other entries....

There are more types of geeks than just coding geeks, Cypox. Don't pretend that your particular sub-subculture owns the label in whole.
the loneliest number
I have a sticker on my car that says, "There is no place like 127.0.0.1" I get to explain it to a lot of people, and I'm usually rewarded with a blank look, followed by a pitying look, followed by parents holding on tightly to their children as they move away slowly at first, then quickly, neve...

What third Matrix flick?
(I've already retconned it out of my own personal storyline.)
the geekiest thing i've ever posted on my blog
Newsflash: I'm proud to be a geek. I can't imagine life without comics, hobby games, dice, science fiction, movie soundtracks, and the people who love them. Well, I can imagine it, but it's just about the most boring goddamn thing I can imagine. When we were younger, it was cruel and hurtful to ...

Someone needs to edit that video as a lip-synched music video to "Tom Cruise Crazy". That would be awesome.
speaking of Jonathan Coulton . . .
. . . as long as I'm on a Jonathan Coulton jag, this is a perfect time to direct you all to Tom Cruise Crazy, especially in light of this madness. Just be glad it's him, not you.

Dodd's opposition to the bill - or at least his willingness to stand up and do something about it - was inspired and propelled by citizen action. It's a pretty interesting story - Greenwald has details.
Thank you, Chris Dodd
When the Democrats -- who I thought were the good (or at least the anti-Bush, and pro-Constitution) guys -- took back Congress in the last election, I was overjoyed. I thought we'd see an end -- finally -- to the Bush administration's recklessness and lawlessness that's made me feel ashamed to ...

The World Turned Upside Down, edited by Eric Flint, Jim Baen, and David Drake. It's an amazing collection of golden-age SF.
MWM seeks SF Anthology for Casual Reading
I love SF novels, and count stories like The Forever War and The Ghost Brigades among my all-time favorites, but in the last year, I've grown very fond of the SF short story. Since an SF short story is what I hope to scrape out of my brains as my next writing project, I've been reading as many s...
