You're correct, Jeff, it doesn't work because the bandwidth of spoken communication is severely limited. Ever heard how a pictures says 1,000 words? I would say a mouse click says a few hundred.
Nobody actually wants to do all work completely for free. You would starve. The point is that people will do some work for free. They call them hobbies. :) All of this has very little to do with economics. Except that like other hobbies (sports, chess, etc) if you position yourself well you can profit off of the fact that other people have this programming hobby.

That's ruby code? It looks like Pascal. :)
The EyeFinity ATIs go all the way down to 5450 for a truly entry-level 3-monitor video card ($45). Since I am only using it for coding, it works for me. You still need to use a DisplayPort to get all three monitors going though.

It's even more of an issue if you work in a Windows shop and post to Linux webserver, or vice-versa. If you use a not so smart FTP and transfer files to and back, sometimes you will end up with double spacing between paragraphs. Or maybe, all your end of lines just disappear. Or it may be that the transfer converts the extra end of line characters into unknown characters and you end up with big ugly questions marks all over your web pages. It also causes problems when you use multiple OSes and transfer files between them. What a pain. It's too bad we don't have some benevolent standards community that can just tell all the OS companies to use one standard for newlines. It would save the economy 10s-of-thousands of developer-hours. They could do something useful instead of detecting and converting newlines.

Woohoo! Glad to be part a discussion with my (mostly) peers again. Thanks.
