Heh, now you downplay his work. All I know he has a career ERA+ place approaching Mo's. That was easy to ignore when he was on your side!

Oooof, just saw that Papsmear was lights out yesterday. It's easy to forget how good he was. And with him behind Halladay and Lee and Hamels, that's a scary. Their offense just needs to get healthy.

Wow, this bullpen could really kill the Sox this year. And Bard is going to have a very short leash. That's no good for him or for the pen. Aceves and Melancon should be okay, but this team could dig itself a hole before they get it figure out.

Good man! Hopefully you've found the variety available at the counters. My mind was blown by the selection alone. Took me 20 minutes to choose! Have you found the concentrates? There's a good reason they call them supermelts!

Dude, Jamaica? You need to get to Cali and score some of Humbolt County's finest. Wait until you experience the variety. They're literally 20 years into the future.

I welcome our new Japanese baseball overlords. May Kei Igawa reign supreme with motorized helicopters. The gift that will keep giving all season long!: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/03/valentine_ponde.html Booby Valentine is too smart to be a mere baseball manager.

Yeah, why joke about Joba's injury? That's seems especially dickish. In other news, hope really does spring eternal: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=mlb&pollId=136102 It's like the Fox News bubble. A 20 point swing for MA, ME, and NH. Let's call it "The NESN Fog". Crawford is in great shape! Iglesias is a vacuum! Booby V is gonna make this fun! The same press that will play along when they're winning will rip him to shreds. Ask Tito.

Ugh, you too krueg? And after the SF overlords almost banned you while you were carrying this site through the 2010 season? Funny how they don't show up when their team encounters an epic collapse. And after all the homerific talk we had to endure last February. Remember how awesome Carl Crawford was going to be? Heh.

It should be noted that under this scenario both the Sox and Braves easily make the one-game playoff last year, ergo no last week drama, or the only drama would have been over who gets the home game. I agree that it gets to be too much intradivisional games. They should go back to a balanced schedule.

Valentine will keep the Sox exciting enough for three possible slots. That's the best you can hope for. The pressure is obviously on the Yanks to win the division. I smoke my chicken. Applechips last night. Don't forget the rub.

That's the best you got Atheose? Damn, I really hope the Sox start well just so you guys cheer up a bit. Short of a championship, will SF and Paul ever come back? Pineda has me really excited about this Yankee team. With the pitching staff I can see a truly memorable season. Thankfully no one here is silly enough to project 103 wins.

Couldn't agree more with your critique of Valentine, John. The funny thing is I'm not going to be surprised if they play well for him. He'll put the best team on the field and the right guys (Pedroia, Bard, Lester, Crawford) will play well for him. The question is whether they have enough talent at the margins to avoid third place again. Beckett may not be happy but he has to come up huge this year.

It is sad that SF and Paul don't even think to come around when major events have completely changed their team. I guess when you're that defeated by two successive third-place seasons, you're always going to be too busy. Here's hoping the Sox show some life this season if only to better throw fried chicken at the SFs here. At least they'll show up then. The best Atheose can do now is complain about MLB.tv? You guys really have lost all spunk!

Wow, how many fights were had here about Posada versus Varitek. Now nary a peep as they both ride off into the sunset? Well, at least we know Posada was vastly superior. It still amazes me that "mask on" is somehow tough and brave. But then if the Sox can get Jim Rice (career .789 OPS on the road) into the Hall of Fame, then no amount of truth really matters.

Funny how it was always the YFs who were trolling and how the SFs could never read what was in front of their face. Where do I say they were the problem? The lack of balance became the problem. The last gasp from Paul last spring is now perfect to behold though! http://www.yfsf.org/2011/02/index.html I have a feeling we won't be seeing the 100-win "projections" this year and the 30,000 words to support them. Then he didn't even make it to the end of April! I gotta go grab dinner. Fried chicken - yummy!

Wow, new baseball season and this place is completely dead. Looking back, the beginning of the end was YF abandoning the site. Login became required. Then the two headed hydra of SF and Paul reigned and started banning people. Nick moved away. Ironhorse travels too much. And now with the utter collapse of the Sox, all the rats have jumped ship. You deserve a medal gerbil. RIP YF vs. SF. You were fun for a while.

As for age, I'm actually pretty impressed that they transitioned the outfield as well as they have. Sure, they kinda got lucky with Granderson and Swisher, but actually not if someone in the front office was paying attention to BABIP. Then with Gardner, they've gotten tremendous value. That's very impressive. Cano adds to that and if they give Montero the shot he deserves, they could staff five lineup slots with guys who are severely underpaid. I kind of agree with you on Jeter and A-Rod but then they're not, or should not be, the emphasis in the lineup. Still, it's not like replacements are sitting right out there as you note, Nick. Both SS and 3B are really hard to fill, as the Sox have consistently demonstrated. It was folly to assume Youkilis could transition back too. The only real lineup disappointment is Teixeira. I thought it was a wasted signing, given how easy it is to find offense at 1B, and now they're stuck with him. It was nice to keep him away from the Sox, and that move dictated the 2009 season, but at what cost? Cashman does deserve all of the blame with the rotation and the utter failures of the "Big Three". But it's amazing that if Nova continues to learn and Banuelos establishes himself in 2012, they'll be on the right path there too. Agree completely on Darvish. Yu gotta be kidding me with the headline possibilities!

Not a fan of Cashman but it could be much worse. Some moves are plain dumb and he's shown a noticeable inability to learn from them. Still, hard to argue with the results. The Sox have missed the playoffs more in the last two years than Cashman has in his entire tenure. As the closest competition, that's really saying something.

"I'm still too depressed to think about the Yankees..." I know it's hard to believe, but you do realize they can't win every year, right? It's an endless struggle for perfection. You'll only suffer. Become a Buddhist. You could also laugh at the Sox...

The most amazing bit of all of this is Henry has just legitimized the Sports Hub as a place where actual criticism matters (and hurts). It's the one place in town where the team can't control the narrative. And Felger just established himself for good. In the same week he called out NESN and Watney, he neutered WEEI. That's unprecedented in Boston. Neither the Globe, NESN, or WEEI got, or forced, the exclusive. You do see though how much of a suck up Maz is. The yacht stuff he was helping Henry try to explain it away. Worse, they never got to the root cause of the team selfishness or how individual players were coddled by this ownership. I find it interesting that Henry admitted only a few people would know about Theo and his meds. Yet, he stuck to defending Larry. Where the interview wasn't great is they didn't stay on him on that point. If it wasn't Larry, then who? Will the person responsible be fired? Why do all breaks with the team and this ownership involve trashing the other side? That's where Henry was making a smart PR move, agreed BB. By showing up he catches them unprepared. At the same time, I bet he wishes he had the Crawford comments back. But that's not a huge unforced error. He can always say Crawford proved him wrong.
