Excellent points, Bill. Teaching and learning needs to be sustainable. Grant Wiggins (I think) once said that the juice has to be worth the squeeze. At the risk of carrying the analogy too far, I'd add that, from a teaching perspective, it isn't worth it if the oranges (learners) don't learn to squeeze themselves. How are our assessment practices preparing learners to monitor their own progress and design their own interventions? If the assessment and instruction is left solely in the hands of the teacher, then the practice is unsustainable on both sides of the relationship. Thanks for give us all something to think about.
