If anyone holds it against you, they were probably going to flame you at the conference anyways. Good luck!
Good News, Bad News
I've been seeing lots of messages on Twitter and Facebook from people who are really excited to come see me tell stories and perform at the upcoming Denver Comicon. I love it that so many people are excited to see me do my thing... and I feel terrible that I have to cancel my attendance this yea...
Dr. Manhattan is wearing underwear?
Doctor Manhattan and Galactus, together at last.
After months away from home (with occasional 12-24 hour visits), I'm finally in my own house, enjoying something resembling a summer vacation. I'm not too keen on doing anything that isn't goofing off, and I'm really okay with that, because I think I've earned it. Until I feel recharged enough t...
My first batch was a little high on the final gravity too, it usually tastes fine, but it may be a little weak.
Two tips my LHBS (Local Home Brew Shop) told me: 1) for ales, use the wet yeasts that are stored in the refrigerator, I use Safale, and 2) if you want some kick, add an extra pound of maltodextrin to a 5 gallon batch. My usual OG is 1.08, and the final is about 1.01.
Enjoy your brew (and time with your son). If you wouldn't mind posting the 'also ran' names on your blog after the label is posted, I'd like to see some of the other ideas.
in which my son and i bottle our beer
I walked down the hallway toward the guest room, and started talking before I got to the door. "Hey, I just looked at my calendar, and I miscalculated when we should bottle our beer." I stepped off the wood floor of the hallway and onto the soft carpet we just had installed. I involuntarily squi...
That does sound uncomfortable. It's too bad there isn't a 'Celebrity Off Duty' hat with blinking red lights that you could wear, kind of like the 'No Service' sign on a bus.
However, I'm guessing even that wouldn't chase them off.
if you cut me, i will bleed
Pretty much all of Comicon was awesome. However, there was one thing that was decidedly not awesome, and though I had initially decided not to talk about it in public, it's bothered me since it happened, so I wrote about it on G+ earlier today. I'm cross posting it here, though, because it's imp...
Go to www.homebrewtalk.com, free register, Forums, Beginner's Beer Brewing forum, and read the 'Is My Beer Ruined Thread.' Some of the answers are hilarious. Based on your post, you're fine.
Turns out you really need to mess up to ruin your beer, it may not be the strongest batch, but you can make up for it with your next one. Remember, RDWHAHB! (Relax, Don't Worry, Have A Home Brew!)
an update on the wheaton and son homebrewing experience
Today, Ryan and I racked (that's fancy homebrew language for "moved") our beer from its primary fermentation into its secondary fermentation. We know now that we probably moved it a little early, but since we're learning and everything, we'll just chalk it up to experience and hope for the best....
I've read off and on over the last few years, good story. Your dad's cousin was right, but I have to admit growing up in Cali leads to different fireworks stories, e.g., in Oklahoma we used to have Roman Candle fights.
Because it's become a yearly tradition, here's a story about fireworks
I've written hundreds of thousands of words over the years, but this remains one of my all-time favorites, so I like to revisit it every year. It was originally written and published on July 5, 2002, which usually feels like years and days ago all at once, but this year actually feels like a lif...
I feel you, I've had my share of disappointments. Rating shipping carriers in order of preference.
1. FedEx--I've had the fewest screwups with them, but they happen.
2. UPS--They mess up more often, but better than...
3. USPS--Surprisingly, they will get your package there, but hardly on time. However, the worst is
4. DHL--I hate to write this because a friend's wife works there, but they have literally lost and never found my packages, and I have never had one show up on time. DHL = Dipshits Having Lunch...except for my friend's wife.
UPS shipping fail - updated (see end of post)
I shipped two boxes of books to Phoenix on Wednesday, to arrive here by 1030 this morning. I paid extra for this, like you do. As 11am rolled around and my books still weren't here, I got a little nervous, so I checked online to see where my packages were. It turns out UPS fucked up and "incorre...
