La Bottega in Ridgewood closed, and is now Bella Notte Italian Bistro
Fans of La Bottega were probably shocked when seemingly overnight the restaurant changed names. In the blink of an eye. Apparently the ownership hasn't changed, but the restaurant is no longer associated with the La Bottega chain. I'm told much of the staff remains the same, as well as many of...
While I disagree that there is "no humane way to execute someone," I fully agree that the death penalty should be scrapped except in extraordinary circumstances.
In addition to the objections you have expressed, it is enormously costly for the state to conduct defense after defense of the challenges to each capital conviction.
Time for the Death Penalty to Die
The death penalty is back in the news and the news is not good: For more than 20 years, the prosecutor who convicted Cameron Todd Willingham of murdering his three young daughters has insisted that the authorities made no deals to secure the testimony of the jailhouse informer who told jurors...
One could make the same argument about gerrymandering on the other side of the aisle, but the Democrats have much better party discipline and whip their bills quite effectively.
The issue is the quality of the speaker and leadership as much as anything else.
Why the Supreme Court is Responsible for Washington Dysfunction
So the latest news is John Boehner has lost control of his caucus and, as a result, the Washington dysfunction continues. Personally, I blame the US Supreme Court. As I see it, the basic problem is the complete collapse of party discipline. House GOP members simply have no reason to fear Boehner...
How would you dole out the hugely inappropriate fines and penalties being levied against JPMorganChase?
The WSJ sees them as a vindictive attack on Jamie Dimon for not marching in lockstep with the Obama administration?
Who should pick up the tab when a corporation is fined?
@BobMonksNews: 'Here's a question: Why shouldn’t fines b paid out of exec bonuses &board of directors' fee? #corpgov http://t.co/ncXnHq1KBB — Dina Medland (@dinamedland) October 12, 2013 I almost never agree with Robert Monks about corporate governance (or politics or, well, pretty much anythin...
My only problem is that I am used to more reasonably priced dim-sum, and am shocked by the bill at this place!
Dim Sum Dynasty: Ridgewood, NJ: Chinese New Year editon
Waking up on the first day of the lunar new year with a hankerin' for Chinese isn't ideal. While we managed to avoid that craving the night before, when no doubt every good Chinese restaurant was packed with people celebrating, we woke up with dim sum on the brain, and Ridgewood's Dim Sum Dynas...
Have you actually read "The Last Ringbearer?" Because if you haven't, don't, and spare yourself a few hours of boredom.
I too was excited about this alternate view, until I read the damned thing. Awful.
Science versus magic in fantasy
One of the recurring tropes in fantasy is that of the good ecomentalists fighting impossible odds to defeat the evil capitalists. Don't believe me? The Hobbits of the Shire coming home to scour the Shire clean of the depridations of proto-industrialist Lotho Sackville-Baggins. The Ewoks beating ...
@DavidSeattle727
No, I was referring to George will's words as the partisan attack.
Prof. Bainbridge restricts his partisanship to California Cabernets.
Geoge Will nukes Sarah Palin
I LOVE this quote from George Will: “The threshold question, not usually asked, but it’s in everyone’s mind in a presidential election. ‘Should we give this person nuclear weapons?’ And the answer [in Palin's case], answers itself.” To which I would add Donald Trump, Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, a...
While it is a wonderful sound-bite, I am unsure how he arrived at this conclusion. Palin has many flaws, and I don't understand how many of her fans have elevated her impressive ability to connect with her audience to the the skill and gravitas necessary for a successful presidency.
But the leap from her lack of experience and knowledge to the suggestion that she will misuse nuclear weapons is a partisan attack from an inside-the-beltway mainstream Republican. I have seen nothing in her speeches or demeanor that would suggest recklessness with the lives of millions.
George Will probably doesn't like her because she wears blue jeans, which he so arrogantly proclaimed "simply isn't done."

Proclaiming the merits of a free market at the same time a judge seems to have ordered the owners to begin the season seems a bit strange. A truly free market would allow the owners to lock out the players!
Kommissar Goodell of the People's Republic of Football
America's sport is dominated by an oligarchy of capitalist plutocrats who behave like socialists. I can't decide whether that's odd or appropriate. It was a point driven home to me today by Roger Goodell's WSJ op-ed: In the union lawyers' world, every player would enter the league as an unrestr...
I was a supporter of an early intervention in Libya, but with the clear, unambiguous goal of deposing Qaddafi (and, hopefully, having him swinging from a lamppost in Tripoli).
This could have been done in the early days of the conflict, before the regime regrouped and rearmed. We could have sent A-10s in to destroy armor and artillery, which would have allowed the rebels to enter Tripoli and perhaps end the fighting.
But Obama's dithering allowed Qaddafi to gain the upper hand, and for this he should be held accountable. Leadership isn't collation of polls and op-ed pieces until a tipping point is reached!
Shooting at civilians in Libya
NY Times: An American pilot and a weapons officer were safely rescued in Libya on Tuesday after their warplane crashed near Benghazi, but the United States Marine Corps dropped two 500-pound bombs during the recovery and faced questions about whether Marines had fired on villagers. In an episod...
I don't claim to be a pizza making expert, but I've made a few in my time. I have discovered that a good quality pizza stone, heated to as hot as one's oven can get it, is a pretty good beginning for a good tasting pizza.
I just don't see how these folks expect the crust to cook to the desired texture without direct contact with a stone or the deck of a commercial pizza oven.
Homemade Pizza Company: Ridgewood, NJ - [CLOSED]
Homemade Pizza Company in Ridgewood has closed. UPDATE: Please find an update below in red. New Jersey is overrun with mediocre pizza. --Look at my sad life. One sentence in and I'm already annoyed-- You know the pizza I'm talking about: the popular stuff. Just this morning we passed Puzo's...
My guess is that they use the single ordering point as a rate-limiting step. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to maintain the quality of the food. The orders flow into the kitchen at a consistent rate compared to the chaos of actually ordering from a waitress when you are ready.
Sammy's Ye Old Cider Mill: Mendham, NJ
It took 45 minutes to get there and 40 minutes to eat one of worst meals in recent memory. And it's not cheap. Many sources have told me that I "have" to go to Sammy's. According to reports, they have "the best steak." "You wait downstairs at the bar" while your food is being cooked (implie...
The commenters on Chowhound are at the pinnacle of food knowledge. There is no need to seek information anywhere else.
Skinnygirl: Margarita
The poor margarita. Once a near-perfect drink, in the family of cocktails known as "the sour" (not, you'll note, "the sweet"), blessed with a balance of natural sweetness, mouth puckering sour, and agave flavors, the margarita has become almost a joke in the hands of bartenders and regular fo...
I think that I live in exactly the wrong part of the state. It seems that it always takes forever to get to Jersey City. But more information on the food and drink scene will help!
Jersey City: Make My City
There's a promotion going on this week in one of my favorite New Jersey cities: Jersey City. A grassroots movement started by maverickandfriend Cara Birbaum in 2009, the Make My City promotion is a great opportunity to give back to the community, and to the businesses and people that make J...
I sort of like the bread, so gutting the top is all the manicuring I do.
And now I am going to make these for lunch!
Sliders: at home
A recent episode of Food Network's Food Feuds got me thinking about sliders again. During this episode, they pitted Hackensack's White Manna against Jersey City's White Mana (not related). When I say "sliders," I'm talking about a specific style of burger, and not simply a "small burger."...
Instead of slicing out the middle, try cutting it toward the bottom and then gutting the top. It creates a nice pocket for the meat and cheese and onions, it keeps it nice and neat, and the ratio of meat to bun is correct.

Agreed that real men use paddles. But real men also drive to Hoboken for sandwiches when the only other option is that "sandwich" pictured above. I think that bread is simply Wonder Bread sprayed on the outside with brown food coloring.
Or try A&S Fine Foods in Wyckoff for the best deli sandwich around these parts. They use real bread!
Sub Base: Fair Lawn, NJ [CLOSED]
#2 - "all the way" I grew up on Mike's Subs down the "Jersey shore." This was looong before Mike's franchised and changed their name to "Jersey Mike's" (and looonger before the phrase "Jersey shore" brought to mind gorilla juice-heads from Staten Island and Queens who drink Ron-Ron juice)....
We have had similar experiences, and with a similar decision not to return, even though my wife likes the place more than I do, that we have honored.
I kept waiting for something that would convince me to return in spite of the horrible bartender (yeah, we had him too) and the $8 draft beer and the bitters-optional Manhattan. But that "thing" never appeared, so they don't get our money anymore. Although, I think my wife has sneaked a visit or two for lunch with friends.
It's not that the food is bad, it's that it just isn't anything I couldn't get at a few dozen places, accompanied by a less expensive pint of ale. Can you tell that the beer prices really irritated me?
Hopefully they will clean up the service act and move away from the frat-boy vibe in the bar, and then we'll give them another shot.
Ho-Ho-Kus Inn: Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ
Each of our three visits to the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn was followed with thoughts of "well, we tried it, and won't be back." But something drove us back. I'm really having a hard time figuring out what that something was, but I think it's the hope that they can pull the place off. So far, I'm not ...
We took your advice, mostly out of desperation; we haven't had a really good tomato in what seems like many years.
And zip-a-dee-doo-dah! They were excellent. We'll be going back until they close up shop for the year.
We served them with a buttermilk blue cheese dressing that went really well with the tomatoes. I used a mild blue cheese so that the tomatoes wouldn't be overwhelmed. Good stuff.
Hawthorne Farmers' Market: Heirloom tomatoes
We stumbled upon the Hawthorne Farmers' Market today. Did a quick fly by and took a look at their stuff. Saw some heirloom tomatoes from a farm whose name I forget (but I'll be finding out next Sunday). Ho, ly, shit. These heirloom tomatoes are up there with the best tomatoes I've ever h...

Try my "FatMan Margarita," coming soon to a store near you.
It's made from three rare ingredients:
Tequila
Lime juice
Cointreau
Less than 300 calories per serving!
Skinnygirl margarita: sold out
Edit: Click here for the taste test/review. A sign of the end of civilization as we know it. People are gobbling this stuff up. Draining bottles of it into their naive gullets. Few having any clue of what a proper margarita should taste like, much less how easy one is to make. A sign by...
The Skinnygirl website claims that a four ounce margarita has over 500 calories. Using the tommyeats recipe, a four ounce margarita has 294 calories.
Maybe she uses tequila made from specially fattened agave plants in those 500 calorie margaritas. Or...maybe she is full of it and is just trying to make a buck

Don't do it! You have no idea what this stuff will do to your palate. It could destroy it forever, and then you will be destined for a life of sour mix and Stirrings Simple Syrup.

@thatJewcancook,
How did you cook the pig? Inquiring minds want to know!
Abma's Farm: Wyckoff, NJ
If you're like me, you call it Amba's Farm. For some reason it's tough to get my head (and mouth) around "Abma". But, it's Abma's Farm. Somewhat related, I realized only this weekend that the word is "Valedictorian", and not "Valevictorian". Thankfully I don't claim to be very bright, al...
And a sugar coated vanilla bean! Wow, that is one sweet cocktail.
There is no way in hell that I would make that drink. It's too damned expensive. Two ounces of Veuve Clicquot and a vanilla bean?
And be honest, how many have you had? Pick a number between zero and one.
Stirrings: Simple Syrup
There's a discussion on chowhound.com on where to find simple syrup...made by Stirrings. At first I thought I must have misread the post; surely Stirrings isn't bottling sugar water and selling it as "simple syrup" (and if they were, surely no one is foolish enough to buy it). Bottling and sell...
