My latest article for WAG Magazine Recently, while doing a TV interview about sex and my upcoming book, the interviewer, a lovely man, seemed stumped when I said both men and women had the same sex hormones. He made me repeat the sentence. “What do you mean?” he said. “I never heard of that. Don’t men have testosterone and women estrogen?” Of course, the answer is yes. But it’s yes to both men and women. We all have estrogen and testosterone and even the hormone made specifically after ovulation, progesterone. The difference between men and women is that we don’t... Continue reading

My latest article in WAG... When my editor gave me this topic for this month’s column, I thought it funny. Doesn’t everyone know how hormones affect everything we do? Doesn’t everyone know we are our hormone balance? The answer to these questions is an unfortunately (sigh) still no. To someone like me who has been working with hormones and specifically bioidenticals (human identical hormones) in women and hormones in general in men for almost two decades, who lives and breathes hormones, who totally understands their tantamount roles in our health and disease, it seems odd that our advanced society, our... The video from my talk presented at the 14th Clinical Applications for Age Management Medicine. Hormones are the juice of life. When you are 20 regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, you are full of hormones, you are fertile, diseases are rare and recovery is swift, we are fertile, do not have wrinkles, can get our body weight under control with diet and exercise and we want to have sex. With the aging process, we loose our hormones and along with their loss we start experiencing symptoms that make us feel crummy. We have hot flashes,... Continue reading

How often do you go to the doctor and out of fear or sheer embarrassment don’t tell the doctor the truth about what is bothering you, the medication you are taking, the supplements, the hormones? You just wait for the doctor to guess. Continue reading

Surprising new federal research suggests low testosterone isn't the only thing men need to worry about as they age. The female hormone estrogen also plays a role in the same issues tied to "low T" — such as increased body fat and diminished libido, strength, and energy. But wellness expert Erika Schwartz, M.D., tells Newsmax Health the findings shouldn't prompt the millions of men who take testosterone to suddenly drop it and start loading up on estrogen. The take-home message, she says: Male and female hormones are both critical to men's health in midlife and beyond. Making sure all men... Continue reading

There was a lot of buzz and questions that resulted from Angelina Jolie announcing her choice to have a double mastectomy based on a blood test that showed she had a higher percentage chance of breast and ovarian cancer. I wanted to create a video that talked through the many issues this has raised so you will make the best decisions for YOU that are based on facts and not fear. Continue reading

This is a critical story I tell many of my patients to shake them out of our natural tendencies to just accept the cards we are dealt by life. It is not the most medically acceptable or proper phrase, but it helps create a vivid and realistic image that I hope will inspire you to change how you think about how you control your health. And how you are TOTALLY in charge of how you age. With the end of our reproductive years comes the natural decline of our sex and thyroid and growth hormones that progressively deplete us of... I want to tell you all about an incredible event that I am so pleased to be a part of this coming April. I spoke at the first one a month ago and can tell you it is truly extraordinary and a treat I highly recommend you give to yourself. Campowerment turns a kid's summer camp into a comfy, women-only weekend retreat! Yes, really! Here are the details from the founder: It’s been almost a month since our first West Coast Campowerment weekend, and we’re all still feeling the residual effects of this powerful, magical weekend that was brimming with... Seems like the flu is back in the news. Almost 200 people in hospitals, lines are forming to get the flu vaccine... Is there another impending epidemic? What should we know and what should we do to prevent not only the flu but the mass fear it spreads in its path. For starters, if the flu shot works why are so many people getting the flu? As we line up to get the flu shot let's take notice of the fact that unless we have compromised immune systems, are frail and aged, suffer with chronic illnesses or asthma, we should... This is the time when everyone is scrambling for a New Year’s resolution, something to do tonight or just go to bed early after the long holiday season that started Thanksgiving and ends tonight. I’ve written about my take on New Year’s resolutions many a time and some of you already know I’m not one for resolutions. I live my life in the moment so I pretty much decide what to do as I do it and the things I plan are not much ahead of tomorrow morning. It’s served me well so far and my advice seems to help... Reporting on a recent study from Vanderbilt University, women who reach menopause earlier (In their 40's) are at higher risk of cardiac diseases and strokes. For those of us clinicians who work exclusively with the use of bioidentical hormones in prevention of diseases of aging this is far from news. The recommendation that women mind their diet and exercise is good, but coming from an academic institution and a seriously funded study, it would be more useful for both doctors and women to be advised that the scientists already know that women who enter menopause early,be it from natural or... LifeExtension Magazine was kind enough to profile me in their most recent issue. I thought you might all enjoy the read... Erika They say that if you want to enact lasting change, start with yourself. That's exactly what physician and bioidentical hormone expert Dr. Erika Schwartz did. In 1996, she was in her mid 40s. By that time, Schwartz was no stranger to overcoming obstacles—in her teens her family fled the communist regime of her native Romania for Rome. From there, with her sights set on the US, she earned a full scholarship to New York University, and then went... Continue reading

My latest article from WAG Mag Long before the advent of modern medicine, the world of herbs was the main source of remedies for most ailments. As contemporary medicine claimed its stake on the development and initial direction of western medicine, scientific proofs and so called evidence based medicine (which pretty much means pharma run research) took center stage and moved herbalist, ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medical practices onto the snake oil or “unproven” side of what we now describe as conventional medicine. Our doctors, myself included, are not trained about herbal medical plants, the positive effects and the negative... Continue reading
