The 1951 film The Thing From Another World is the original (the one with James Arness as the alien mentioned earlier in the comment thread), based John W. Campbell's _Who Goes There?_ from 1938.

I loved Carpenter's The Thing, and can't wait to see the Prequel... but how can you use the word "easily" to describe Carpenter's film as the best SciFi/Horror film ever? Surely, you agonized a bit over Alien?
