It's not communist hippy bullcrap. Mr. Pink clearly states that before this works you have to take money out of the equation, which means paying people enough that money isn't a concern. As much as I enjoy this topic, it's really just an extension of Maslow, it is difficult to be motivated by mastery, purpose, etc unless your lower needs are met. :)
