Your description of the #FuriouslyHappy FOW girl really touched me, because moments of joy like that are indescribably precious and can carry you through other, less joyful times. Then, I got kind of sad, because your description of why she had the chance to experience such a perfect moment made it clear that it was predicated on her or her family having enough money to go on this cruise. What if your readers and JoCo's fans pulled together some donations to support a trip for a couple of people on the next cruise, sort of a #FuriouslyHappy Geek Summer Camp scholarship, maybe for folks stuck in less joyful times? I'd kick in a few bucks, even though I couldn't afford to go myself.
The boat is still moving, even though I am not on it. But there was music when I was on the boat.
I've gotten much worse at writing relevant titles since an hour ago. Oh well, circle of life.* Previously, on Battlestar Galactica my blog: Holland America goes to this private island in the Bahamas that is everything you'd expect from a private beach in the Caribbean, if you were expecting a ...
Your life sounds really nice right now.
title of the blog post
When I was reading back through my archives in preparation for Wil Wheaton versus Paul and Storm last week, I thought, more than once, "I really need to write more." Each time, though, my calendar grabbed focus and shouted at me like Jules in Pulp Fiction until I begged it to stop. I miss writin...
That one is going to stay with me. You know how some of the short stories you read, whether they're science fiction or Goosebumps, just stick in your head forever? This story is sticky.
Flash Fiction: The Monster In My Closet
About two hours ago, I thought to myself, "'There's a monster in my closet' would be a neat way to start out one of those scary short stories I loved to read when I was in middle school." I wrote it down, then wrote a little more and a little more. Right around the time I realized I had no idea ...
p.s. They're playing in Portland, OR on April 29th and Anaheim, CA on May 7th, although they're the opening act at both shows.
three incredible indie bands you should listen to
My brother has been making these cool time lapse videos of life on his ranch in Montana. In a recent video, he used music that I instantly loved ... but he didn't say who it was. Luckily for me, I live in the future, so I fired up Shazam on my Android, let it do its thing, and in less than a min...
AMAZING! Telekinesis has been my new favorite band since I heard their album streamed on NPR a few months ago. I saw them play in Cambridge last month, and it was possibly the best show I've ever been to. They are an incredibly joyful live band. Coincidentally, The Love Language opened. I am HOLY CRAP HAPPY that you've discovered them and love them, too!

Evil Wil Wheaton is even more awesome when he's allowed to work blue. CBS and FCC take note!
Emerald City Comicon after action report
ECCC has officially joined PAX on the List of Conventions I Don't Ever Want To Miss. It's well-organized, staffed by competent and friendly volunteers, and has what is, in my opinion, the perfect balance of comics and popular geek culture. This year, I had to leave Saturday afternoon to fly home...
SuperPretzels? You can make them better.
(1) Heat them for a shorter time than the instructions say. Heating according to instructions overcooks them.
(2) Put a little water on your forefinger and spread it over the top surface of the pretzel before heating.
the frozen pretzel conundrum
I am slowly but steadily finding my way back to that mysterious land where I feel motivated and inspired to write something every day. I blame Fallout: New Vegas for wrapping me up in an interesting world every night, and a giant stack of comic books that reminded me how much I love superhero st...
A friend of a friend built Fictopedia - a wiki for fictional facts! - and this is the first place I knew I had to share it. Enjoy, all you writers of the world. My friend Pam asks that you especially help enhance her entry on the scuba police.

precious and fragile things
I'm sitting in my apartment in Vancouver, finishing my coffee and oatmeal. My iPod is shuffling through a massive 80s alternative playlist I made before I came up here, so I've been accompanied by Elvis Costello, The Smiths, Souxie, Depeche Mode, The Jam, and Bauhaus while I start my day. I'm no...
PAX East keynote?! Sweet! I've been waiting for Gabe and Tycho to post more details about the schedule - like who's giving the keynote(s) - and even though I'd read on the forums that you'd be there, I didn't know you'd have such a prominent platform for your brand of awesome!
Definitely go to Bukowski's while you're in Boston. It's right around the corner from the Hynes Convention Center, and it has a sublime beer list and awesome veggie chili dogs.
In which Wil discovers that he has Bioshock 2 Elbow.
My arms hurt so much today, I can hardly lift a cup of coffee, and I feel quite silly. This is how it happened... I played ice hockey all through high school and into my early 20s. I loved being a goalie, and after going to lots of Kings games with Nolan in January, I decided that I was going to...
(1) Any chance you'd share the recipe for your vegetarian chili? It gets referenced a lot in your stories - must fuel the creative part of your brain - and every mention makes me hungry.
(2) Got my ticket for Pax East. Will you be there?
From the Vault: a design flaw in the otherwise perfect basket
Last night, I stood in front of the open refrigerator and thought to myself, "You know what would go good with this vegetarian chili? That Oaked Arrogant Bastard!" I reached for it, applying my -3 DEX modifier, like you do. A minute later sent the following text message to Anne: "Hey, we're out ...
I was looking at those pictures and wondering if they were from Montana. Nowhere else has that look. I'm hoping to go back to Glacier National Park for some camping next summer. Beautiful pictures that made me wish I was there right now, instead of sitting at my desk in Cambridge Mass.
in which my brother gets excited and makes things
Whenever I write about and link to my brother's photography, the positive feedback is just overwhelming. It seems that people all over the world love his work just as much as I do, and as a big brother that makes me put my hands on my hips and smile like a goon. If you haven't seen them before, ...
What's with the photo of the guy in his underwear viewed through the motel window, at the end of the first montage? I feel like that must be a joke I'm missing.
the obligatory w00tstock post
Everything I could possibly say about w00tstock has already been said by Paul and Storm, who made a lovely list, and Molly, who made a comic that captures exactly how I felt the whole time we did our shows. I loved feeling the terror and exhilaration of trying something totally new (The Trade, w...
The marketers should use that picture of you as a pull-quote. Most effective campaign ever!
If all reboots were done this well, we geeks would never worry about reboots.
Between work and meetings, I'll be AFK for most of today, but this is important enough to warrant its own quick entry until I can write something more in-depth later today: I went with Chris Hardwick and his girlfriend to see Star Trek last night. Speaking both as a member of the Star Trek famil...
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I'm having trouble coming up with a good replacement term, though. How about "shtup?" It's silly and still clear on the meaning, and I think it has the right sound, if you know what I mean.
My favorite lines: "(hey, he is French!)" and "the cast of Time Bandits"
"if you treat her right, she'll always bring you home."
On Twitter yesterday, I said, "And now, a useless fact, brought to you by 'I need a break from rewriting Encounter At Farpoint': I loved Mike Tyson's Punchout on NES." I was flooded with replies that were variations of "WTF? Rewriting Encounter at Farpoint? Why?" I can see how, lacking context, ...
Okay, I can't see my comment(s) but I'm going to assume they posted. D'oh.
LA Daily: Miniature Golf and the Goddamn Volcano Hole
Having realized my own creative limitations, my contributions to the LA Daily will now be bi-weekly, instead of weekly. Let's all celebrate with this week's story, which appears to be about playing minigolf with my wife. "Fucking Pagoda hole. That was bullshit. The volcano hole will be the gre...
Have you been to Funspot in Laconia / Weirs Beach, NH? It's totally worth the 2+ hour trip next time you're in the greater Boston area. The third floor is a "museum" of playable arcade games from the 80s that are (usually) in good working order. It was the setting for the documentary "King of Kong." My family's been going there on vacation for the past 25 years, and it's always a good time. There's also a beat-up minigolf course that I love beyond reason, an indoor bowling alley, and nightly bingo.

Have you ever been to Funspot in Weirs Beach / Laconia, NH? It's definitely worth a trip next time you're anywhere in the greater Boston area. Their entire third floor is vintage arcade games. It's classified as a museum, but they're all playable and (usually) in good working order. Really a fantastic experience for any videogame geek or child of the 80s.

Would somebody close the italics tag? This is a pretty funny bug in typepad.
talk about your dream of horses
I'm so close to letting Memories of the Future Volume One leave the nest, I'm already starting to miss the taste of partially-digested bugs in my throat. So far, I've shared parts that are from the recaps, but the other half of each entry is more analysis and reflection on each episode, and that...
Do you have a copy of Smofe & Smang, his live album from Minneapolis? If not, I'd be happy to send you one (all above board - it's not available anywhere, and he's granted me wink-and-nod permission to burn copies in exchange for donations to Doctors Without Borders).
Oh, and he writes a good blog, too. Very eloquent guy on the web as well as in his lyrics.
it's all inside the wrist. it's all inside the way you time it.
Some more Memories of the Future edits, for your (and my) amusement. Here's the original: After a bit of exploring, they find themselves in the lab of Data's creator, Dr. Noonian Soong. Riker, Geordi, and Tasha all join forces to be sort of an Exposition Voltron, informing the audience that Noo...
Is this entry's title a quote from a Mike Doughty song? It took me a few minutes of hearing it sung inside my head before I could place it...I'd love to know if you're a fellow fan.

Wow. Wow, I love that. I laughed so hard. The funniest part by far is the internal consistency of language.
in the country of the kaurava king
This made it past my mail filters last night: This is youur penis: 8--o This is youur penis on drugs: 8=====O Any questionss? He said. Yes, and he can beat any man in the country of the kaurava king (suyodhana) with all his followers an apportionment bill and carefully revise it of view. Insol...

whenever i type "lions," i have to make sure i haven't accidentally typed "loins"
A friend of mine showed me the most awesome picture of a little Voltron toy I think I've ever seen. It had lions for hands. This bounced around in my head for a moment, and I shared my great wisdom with Twitter, thusly: Voltron with Lions > Voltron with vehicles. THIS IS SCIENCE AND YOU CAN'T ...
In a semi-related note, one of my friends has a agreed to have a Buffy-themed wedding if and only if her partner can get Joss Whedon to officiate. Any suggestions on how to go about making this happen would be super appreciated, because I really want to see this spectacle unfold.

Well, they did it for LOTR, so there's always hope.
Spoiler Alert: WATCHMEN is fucking awesome.
Note: I have kept spoilers out of this post. Please keep the comments spoiler-free as well. I got to see a special advance screening of Watchmen yesterday, at a taping of MTV Spoilers. They showed us the whole movie, and then ran some clips from the new Harry Potter, the Land of the Lost, and th...
Talking to a friend of mine with small children, I equated the scariness of this movie to the scenes from Sleeping Beauty with Maleficent and her dragon transformation.
my other mother loves me
Yesterday, Anne convinced me to take a break from work so we could go see a matinee of Coraline, which was playing in 3D at a local theater. I love the book, and I love Nightmare Before Christmas, so it seemed like a no-brainer. But 3D? I wasn't so sure. I'm not a huge fan of 3D. It always feels...
