Yes, Truman Capote! Also, I just re-read "A City of Bells" by Elizabeth Goudge, which is a wonderful book that's both a Christmas read and a comfort read for me. There's a companion called "Sister of the Angels" which is shorter and which works almost as well for me at Christmastime.

Thanks so much for your comment! You have inspired me to revisit my blog; I really need to post more than once a year. Glad you loved this book too! I am always yammering on to people about it, and it's good to know that there are other people who are aware of it and who loved it as much as I did. Antonia is such an awesome and funny character; she's one of those girls that I wish were real so we could hang out.

Oh, please read "Gloria"! It is truly one of my favorite books ever, and led me to read every book by Maillard that I could get my greedy little hands on. I've also given this book as a gift to lots of people, all of whom have loved it. I would love to hear your thoughts about it. Coincidentally enough, I am just reading "East of the Sun", and am saving your blog post to read when I've finished it.

I love this book so much. I also love her book "The Shell Seekers", which also takes place partly during the war, and has similarly awesomely great characters. But this is the one I return to and reread when I need a good comfort book!
