I desperately wanted to breastfeed. It was going OK, and then I developed life-threatening post-partum complications. After an intubation and a stay in the ICU, my doctors told me I had to stop breastfeeding so my body could use its precious resources for healing my heart. I grieved over the loss. Now my babies are on formula, and I kid you not, even my formula can has a label on it that says "breast is best." Like I need to feel like even my formula can is judging me. When I noticed that label, I felt like I always feel when I am confronted with lactivism: like I need to justify myself: but I tried! I wanted to! I have a medical excuse! Do you want to see my doctor's note?? But the thing is, I shouldn't have to justify my parenting choices to anyone. Even if I weren't breastfeeding simply because I do not want to, that should be reason enough.

So. Bizarre. I still sort of can't get over it. I'm a Christmas celebrator, myself, but I'd never take offense over any sort of holiday greeting. Especially knowing that you're UU, I mean, you're almost obligated to use the most inclusive greeting possible, right?

I'm with your daughter-- an English major who, aside from a notebook of very embarrassing and angsty poems (a couple of which ended up in a lit mag before I realized how awful they were), does not "do" creative writing. Creative nonfiction, yes, fiction and poetry, no. And I'm not going to grade you but I like your poem. It's interesting to look back at all the selves we have been.

We practically rioted when they got rid of trays in our college caf in favor of small plates. They claimed it was to cut down on our food wasted. We claimed it was a ploy to make us stand in line over and over again in order to be able to eat the same amount of food.

Nice post! I see so many people dismissing Eat Pray Love as frivolous or silly. One person I saw suggested it should be re-titled First World Problems. But Elizabeth Gilbert never pretended hers weren't first world problems. She was simply deeply unhappy and unsatisfied with her life, and she had the luxury of doing something about it, and she told her story. Personally, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the movie, and like you, I see a twinge of sexism in many of the reviews that dismiss it.

Ha! No need to be afraid I'd read it! I've got friends with all sorts of opinions on Jesus, but feel most at home among doubters.

I like cranky Yankees. Even though I like Jesus too. Even though I'm pretty strenuously opposed to homeschooling in almost all cases, though I have dear friends who do it.
