Given Facebook's long term commitment to PHP I think you may as well forget the possibility of it fading into obscurity.

It's true that for most people all their computing needs can be met by a phone or tablet but people are taking that assumption way too far. What about an accountant? Are they going to do spreadsheets on their tablet? Obviously not. If you had a monitor and keyboard at work and at home a tablet could maybe suffice for this type of demographic, but it's still not practical. The main reason being that the applications are watered down because they're designed with the 8.9 inch touch screen in mind. Maybe if all the tablet productivity apps had a "docked" version that was fully featured. That would work for the business people but why would the tech industry bother to provide that them? We won't do that for two reasons; we'd be losing a lot of the work put in on our existing products, and we'd be merging two markets when it would be more profitable to keep them separate.

I am so incredibly sick of hearing people make these speculations. As we speak I'm writing this comment on my iPad 2, I wish I was in the other room on my desktop. Logging in to post this comment via Facebook is reason enough for me to want to be on a different device. The fact that advances in ARM powered devices are currently out pacing traditional computers doesn't really mean very much. The desktop computer will surely see another period of rapid performance increases. Besides that this idea of using a tablet with an external keyboard is just plain stupid. I have that and I also have a MacBook Air, I strongly prefer the MacBook Air. Why would I want my keyboard to be detached (just makes it a pain to carry) when I can have it connected to the computer? Not to mention touch screens will never be nearly as effective as a mouse, I find myself frequently deleting an entire sentence because its easier than actually selecting the position I would like edit. The mobile and desktops markets aren't in equilibrium right now, they're going to move back towards desktop dominance.

I have to disagree. I bought an iPad 2 in the spring 11' when it came out. In January or February of 2012 I bought a MacBook Air because I was sick of answering emails with a touch keyboard. Even typing 200 words on the iPad is a pain in the ass. Besides that I can do real work on the MBA like write a script or remote into my work machine (Windows 7) which no tablet allows. And to the StackOverflow point; it's too much typing to answer a question on a tablet. On top of that, what if I need to actually run some code to make sure it works?
