my splice column this week is a profound innovation in the op-ed form: a list of lists. this is not who we are as americans! or is it? the only way to know for sure is to do the hard... Continue reading

I'm going to try briefly to intervene in a debate between Daniel Dennett and Thomas Nagel on consciousness, spurred by Nagel's review of Dennett's From Bacteria to Bach and Back in the March 9 New York Review of Books. Dennett... Continue reading

i'm in splicetoday this week with my peace anarchist schtick. when you're at the point where the anarchists are demanding speech repression, you really have run out of liberatory options. it's been months since i've seen a human being with... Continue reading

chace, it's not that speaking or praying or encouraging or ridiculing does not have effects in the world. but the world is not made from words, and you can't change the world merely by redescribing it. talking or writing are not acts of violence, etc. what would be useful would be a realistic assessment of what words are and what effects they can actually have under what circumstances. for example, if a parent constantly attacks a child or withdraws love from early, that has psychological effects. but it is not just words. and that is not like the case where you read something you don't like in the newspaper or something, or where a comedian is appearing across campus. and then, there are the effects of the repression itself, which i hold are disastrous. and like i say, the mechanisms of speech repression people institute can be turned against them when the mood changes. then we'll be ostracizing people or silencing them for criticizing the war effort, or the new mass incarceration program. let trump conclude that what you say when you say anti-racist or anti-homophobic things makes you an enemy of the people.

The invocation to prayer in the new religion - or ancient superstition - goes like this: 'words have power.' What that means is that you ought to be silenced, or, you answer to us for what you say. I'd call... Continue reading

yes, true, and he thinks that will fix and end philosophy. one sad effect of wittgenstein was that he gave philosophers a bad conscience about their own discipline. it was like philosophy committing suicide.

latest godling to get why-they-sucked is the astounding genius ludwig wittgenstein. true, true, i was subjected to the cult of ludwig in grad school (by people such as cora diamond and renford bambrough). he and they always put me in... Continue reading

i've said this before, but now i'm saying it again, drawn by teaching through james c. scott's beautiful book seeing like a state. standardized testing is an excellent example of what he's talking about; designed to provide a reliable child-product... Continue reading

stillnotking - it had definitely occurred to me that the thing looked pretty ridiculous back then; that's what they coined 'kitsch' for, actually. still...

The New York Times's "Week in Hate" column has been singularly unimpressive, and is symbolic of the very ideological development of what was once a journalistic operation. It manages to suggest, without directly asserting, a classic post hoc: 'hate crimes... Continue reading

I do think the only basis for Trump resistance has to be a realistic assessment of who he is and what he's doing at any given time. The anti-Trump media and social media has been, overall, really detached from reality.... Continue reading
