one of the best country artists working now is sunny sweeney. the new album, trophy, is her best, i think, though her first album was particularly great. i think if you like miranda lambert, ashley monroe, kacey musgraves, brandy clark... Continue reading

on splicetoday and on twitter i've been arguing that trump may well have a point that he's been under surveillance. perhaps he went for those accusations of wiretapping after the intel people let him see that they have his communications.... Continue reading

It's out: the big old magnum opus. My first system of philosophy might have been high school. It was so wrong, though. i'm apologizing for the $95 price tag. try inter-library loan? or there will be a cheaper paper later... Continue reading

I'm going to try briefly to intervene in a debate between Daniel Dennett and Thomas Nagel on consciousness, spurred by Nagel's review of Dennett's From Bacteria to Bach and Back in the March 9 New York Review of Books. Dennett... Continue reading

i'm in splicetoday this week with my peace anarchist schtick. when you're at the point where the anarchists are demanding speech repression, you really have run out of liberatory options. it's been months since i've seen a human being with... Continue reading

chace, it's not that speaking or praying or encouraging or ridiculing does not have effects in the world. but the world is not made from words, and you can't change the world merely by redescribing it. talking or writing are not acts of violence, etc. what would be useful would be a realistic assessment of what words are and what effects they can actually have under what circumstances. for example, if a parent constantly attacks a child or withdraws love from early, that has psychological effects. but it is not just words. and that is not like the case where you read something you don't like in the newspaper or something, or where a comedian is appearing across campus. and then, there are the effects of the repression itself, which i hold are disastrous. and like i say, the mechanisms of speech repression people institute can be turned against them when the mood changes. then we'll be ostracizing people or silencing them for criticizing the war effort, or the new mass incarceration program. let trump conclude that what you say when you say anti-racist or anti-homophobic things makes you an enemy of the people.

The invocation to prayer in the new religion - or ancient superstition - goes like this: 'words have power.' What that means is that you ought to be silenced, or, you answer to us for what you say. I'd call... Continue reading

yes, true, and he thinks that will fix and end philosophy. one sad effect of wittgenstein was that he gave philosophers a bad conscience about their own discipline. it was like philosophy committing suicide.
