An experiment
I've been thinking about this a lot and I finally decided to give it a try. I'm going to intregate this blog and my dutch blog Which is scary, since my dutch blog is actually my look-I'm-a-writer-blog, but it didn't feel right until I started posting more personal stuff on... Continue reading

Oh, you have chickens! That's so great! I can see Maddie is doing a really good job taking care of them. She will be so proud when they start laying. Is she going to sell them? (if I lived closer I'd be her first customer. We use a lot of eggs around here and since we can't have chickens ourselves I'm looking for a small farmer to buy them from. I'd like to at least "know" the chickens they come from.)
maddie's chickens
come meet maddie's chickens! brand-new chicks, early this spring :: a new home for them :: the big chickens (my how they've grown under maddie's watchful "wing") :: now maddie is just waiting for her first egg! one of these girls should lay one any day now.
Oh yes, that is a great summer sport! And you do need a cow, just like I need chickens (no cow, we've got some lactose intolerants here).
For me the sport is not finding diner, but coming up with new ways to eat (green) endives and lettuce, 'cause that's what I have lots and lots of. Most of the seeds I just sowed "to see what would happen" came up - who knew they would do that?
my favorite summer sport
Backyard baseball in the summer is an important part of my life, and I can always be talked into a little bit of badminton too. Croquet? Yes, please. But my favorite summer sport without a doubt is summertime dinner making. A sport, you say? Why yes, yes it is. When the summertime days...
in my garden
this is where I find peace. where my mind stops wandering and worrying, where my hart beats steadier and my breath slows down, where I can forget about the chaos of my right now, for just one tiny moment of bliss... Continue reading

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! We have a house full of gluten intolerants (and lactose is acting up too), so I know what you're going through (though I'm the only one that isn't gluten intolerant here, so not from my own experience).
I hope you're feeling better soon!
8.11.12
12 pounds is too many. And in 7 days, no less. But in the last 24 hours I've been able to eat 3 bananas, 3 scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of toast, a bit of fruit salad, a piece of cheese with ham, and drink a whole lot of apple juice. And it's all stayed in. Maybe I'll be able to gain some of th...
1. eating lettuce from my very own garden (lots and lots, since I sowed way too much)
2. watching the zucchiniplants burst all over the place (hoping it isn't too late for them to bloom and have fruit)
3. watching the corn, the endives, the carrots, everything grow
4. knowing my husband and I have three whole days of "being together" ahead of us
5. the fact that at nineteen my youngest daughter still enjoys staying over at her grandparents
6. knowing that Saturday I will drive to the airport to pick up one daughter, have my parents over for diner to bring home another and drive to the airport again to pick up the last one and then we will be all together again (for a day, until one of them takes of again for another week of vacation)
7. the joy of knitting for charity. so rewarding. Or actually, just the joy of knitting. Knowing it has a purpose gets bonuspoints.
8. looking forward to some sewing time
9. reading your blog ;-)
10. sun! Our summer isn't deep at all, but I do savor every bit of sunshine we get.
Thank you for making me think hard and list these ten things. I need to do that more often.
ten things
It's been a very long time since I've done a proper 'ten things' around here. Today feels like just the kind of day to do so. A pause, a shift, an exhale. It always comes along with a list of joy. And so, these ten things are bringing me great joy right now.... 1. Sandor Katz's new book, The A...
Your garden looks great! I've started a little vegetable garden of my own this summer. We don't have a lot of space, but I'm making do with some raised beds. And I'm loving every little bit of it! I can't wander into the garden to decide what's for diner, like you do (how lovely that sounds), but I do go in to pick a few leaves of lettuce before lunch each day (to eat on sandwiches) and to notice what crop might be eaten for diner soon. Oh, and to dream about next year, when I will have more beds, more time and a little bit more experience to plan for a more efficient use of space... I'm enjoying every second of it!
notes from the garden journal
{photo by Ezra} As August approaches, the garden is humming along at a steady pace. My weekly Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association pest report from their crop specialist Eric Sideman began this week with "I would still call this a difficult growing season." Grant...
Those are great!
I love pinterest too, but I have to admit that it's a lot of pinning and not really actually making something around here. But it's inspiring, so that's good. Pinterest actually inspired me to finally start finishing the kitchen (after 8 years of living here there was still some tiling, grouting and painting to tackle). Maybe when I am actually finished I will start using those recipes I pinned...
about pintrest
i promised myself that i wouldn't just pin and pin and pin and never use anything i pinned. i also promised myself that i would tackle a to-do list this week. one of the things on my list was sew something. so, last night when ben was on the phone, i went to my pintrest i should make this b...

Oh yes, we're in the same boat indeed. ;-)
Good to hear from you. Have a great day and enjoy your weekend!
hello friends
it's been too long. again. i don't really know where to start. so, i'll just tell you that this morning i am :: sitting on my brown couch in a living room that has been rearranged :: drinking my second BIG mug of coffee (in the heart mug, stef) :: listening to the two dogs playing outside...

Each and every one of your spinning posts makes me want to start spinning too. Which is kind of silly since I can't even squeeze more than a few rows of knitting into my days lately...
spinning at my side
While we wait for the shearer to visit (soon!), I continue to spin through the lovely bits of roving that I began with and that have been gifted to me. All in the name of 'practice,' I am (obviously) loving every bit of it. The wool - the twist - it feels like magic happening in my hands, and ...
garden progress
Some of you may remember that last year I started renovating our backyard. We'd removed our leaking swimming pool and were left with quite a mess. I got some inspiration online and started from the middle. The plan was to have a little room to sit and use the rest... Continue reading

Oh, that's such a beautiful garden! I think that shed is cute already.
I've just barely begun growing vegetables, in a very small space, just to get the feel of it. Maybe in a few years I'll move on to a bigger garden (we might be able to buy of rent the bare plot that's behind our back yard), but for now this is it and I think it's really exciting.
And sort of scary too, since I have no idea what I'm doing really. I have already planted more endives than I care to eat, the lettuce is dying and I'm not sure if any of the seeds I put in last week are going to come up. And now that I think of it, if they all do, where do I put the plants? Oh my.
Isn't this fun? I love gardening!
garden evolution
June 2010 This space has changed so much since that June day two years ago when we first walked this property and thought maybe - just maybe - this place was The One. Here, in this particular spot, was an overgrown, many years neglected garden so thick we could barely walk through it, and an ou...
I enjoyed it too!
I love your sunset. I can totally relate about the time I wanted to spend on this. Especially yesterday... sunset is after 10 pm here now and we've been working the garden so we were just to tired to wait for it. And in summer sunset is behind the neighbors big barn too, so this picture (from last week) is actually the reflection of the sunset on the other side of the house..
G+E :: a week in photos :: sunset on sunday
G E i stepped out the door at work last night at about 8:45 pm and this is the sight that greeted me. i didn't know if i would have a sunset to take a picture of - it had been raining earlier - and there had been a rainbow - a full rainbow - which i showed one of the residents as i wa...

Oh, I love your picture, it really tells the story of summer. I was take pictures of us on the roof terrace, me knitting in the sun, or planting the garden or... but this morning we had rain and it was chilly, just like the days before. It's not really summer here yet (I do hope we get some summer weather this year). So I turned to the flowers.
This afternoon was good though. We finished another bit of the backyard. It's finally starting to look like a garden ;-)
