Your proposal of "return-based linebreaks" shows that you do not understand Markdown. Markdown is not a markup language. It is "a plain text formatting syntax" (and a software tool). The idea is that you can format text in a way so that it is easy to read in plain plus that it is easy to convert. Plain text without line breaks is not easy to read.
